How Localised Education Apps are Helping Kids Learn Better

How Localised Education Apps are Helping Kids Learn Better

Ever pondered the meaning behind the rhyme 'London Bridge is Falling Down'? It's a question that has likely crossed the minds of many Indians. Much of our early education content has been influenced by the west, making it somewhat less relatable for us. However, homegrown apps like Kutuki are revolutionizing this by emphasizing the importance of aiding children's learning with locally relevant content. Listen to the insights of teachers from Rishi Valmiki Eco School as they share how integrating Indian references and context into the learning process simplifies and enhances education.

Paul Allen, founder of Ancestry.com and Soar, discusses how genAI studios launch AI-first companies

Today's guest has been bringing families together online since 1997 when he founded Ancestry.com which has served more than 13 billion profiles, amassed 40 billion people records, and generated over a billion dollars in revenue. He followed that up with FamilyLink which he founded in 2007 and today has more than 50 million users.

For the past several years, Paul Allen has been on a new adventure having founded Soar.com in 2017. He and the team are connecting employees to stories from trusted sources to help them make better, more informed decisions.

Soar indexes millions of hours of video and audio content in domains as diverse as academic lectures, political hearings, and stump speeches. Not surprisingly, he and the team are using AI to make all that content discoverable and accessible.

Paul is a sought after speaker, a director of the Human Justice Foundation, and is one of the most mission-driven entrepreneurs of our generation.

    5. How an AI studio for audio transcription works
    6. The role of CitizenGPT... and why it won't hallucinate

    Episode Introduction

Welcome to this thought-provoking episode of the Redefining Society Podcast with your host, Marco Ciappelli. Prepare to dive deep into a compelling conversation that investigates the very bedrock of society — education. Is there something fundamentally amiss with how we're imparting knowledge to the next generation? Are we teaching them how to learn and critically think about what they're learning? Listen in as we explore these burning questions and more.

In this episode, Marco engages in a riveting conversation with Jeffrey Scheuer, the author of "Inside the Liberal Arts: Critical Thinking and Citizenship." A book that ambitiously endeavors to merge the realms of liberal arts, critical thinking, and citizenship into a comprehensive whole in just under 200 pages. Jeffrey takes on the challenge of explicating the elusive nature of liberal arts, critical thinking, and their inherent connections, a task rarely undertaken in earnest.

As you listen, contemplate Marco's ethos: he's not here to provide definitive answers but to encourage his audience to ponder different perspectives and cultivate their own thoughts. In a world where the term 'liberal' has become so politically charged, Jeffrey offers clarity by tracing its roots back to ancient Rome. 'Liberal arts,' he posits, originally meant 'the skills of a free citizen of the Roman Republic,' and miraculously, still carries that connotation. It's about citizenship, about the transactions between the individual and the community, and this conversation delves into what it truly means to be a good citizen.

Today, in the age of information overload and evolving technological landscapes, are the education and media industries keeping pace? Are they fostering informed, enlightened citizens or merely consumers of information? What's the role of critical thinking in navigating the ceaseless waves of data and stimuli we encounter daily?

Join us as we discuss these fascinating topics and more. Let's redefine society together. If this conversation makes you think, Marco has done his job. Share your thoughts, spread the conversation, and make sure to subscribe to the Redefining Society Podcast for more insightful discussions. Remember, we're here not just to consume information, but to critically think, engage, and shape the world around us. Let's start the journey.

    About the Book

Inside the Liberal Arts: Critical Thinking and Citizenship answers three highly topical and related questions:

    - What are the liberal arts?

    - What is critical thinking?

    - How are they connected?

At a time when liberal education is on the defensive vis à vis the STEM disciplines, and its future is called into question, the terms ‘liberal arts’ and ‘critical thinking’ are often used in tandem but seldom explained. Inside the Liberal Arts provides an overview of the core ideas that enable students to become higher-level thinkers. Avoiding the excesses of much academic prose (narrowness of focus, turgidity, obscure and unnecessary terminology, the pretention of absolute authority, and over-sourcing), Inside the Liberal Arts answers the three questions above, for students, educators, and the wider community of aspiring critical thinkers. It is at once a deep exploration of the concept of the liberal arts, and an accessible, thought-provoking guide to critical inquiry  for students, prospective students, graduate students,  former students, adult learners,  parents, and anyone interested in liberal learning.

Defenders of the liberal arts perennially mention the importance of liberal learning to critical thinking and to citizenship. But there is no work that systematically explores the meaning of those ideas and how the liberal arts, critical thinking, and citizenship interconnect. As Mark Twain purportedly said of the weather: everyone complains about it, but nobody does anything about it.

Inside the Liberal Arts: Critical Thinking and Citizenship does something about it.

Examining the meaning of the term “liberal arts” and its roots in Greek and Roman thought, it goes on to explain how critical thinking unifies the modern liberal arts curriculum. As such, it is both an exploration of the nature of liberal learning and, integral to that, an accessible introduction to higher-level critical thinking for students, educators, and general readers.

While Inside the Liberal Arts presents multiple themes and concepts, an overarching idea is that citizenship is essentially triangular, embracing civic, economic, and cultural dimensions that interrelate, and that the value of liberal education lies in preparing students for all three forms of citizenship.

Inside the Liberal Arts distills four literatures: studies of the liberal arts; general books on thinking for lay readers; works on critical thinking; and philosophy. Its twin purposes are inseparable: to show how liberal learning promotes robust triangular citizenship, and to explain the concepts and ways of thinking that inform it. As a study of the role of thought in higher education, Inside the Liberal Arts addresses both general and academic readers in a way that will be both timely and enduring.

    Episode Introduction

Welcome to another riveting episode of the Redefining Society Podcast with your host, Marco Ciappelli. Today's conversation will take us on an exploration of social and entrepreneurial philanthropy, offering fascinating insights into how individuals and corporations alike are contributing significantly to the betterment of our society. We're thrilled to have Maurice Ramirez and Allison Sakara from the High Alert Institute as our esteemed guests, who bring their unique perspectives on this crucial topic.

Our guests guide us through their first-hand experiences working in the non-profit sector, particularly the High Alert Institute's noble work in human health care, veterinary health care, environmental stewardship, and more. In an increasingly post-pandemic society, they underline an interesting trend: the growing consciousness of individuals about their impact on the world and their eagerness to invest their time, talent, and treasure to improve it.

Marco's conversation with Maurice and Allison raises compelling questions about the shifting paradigm of consumer behavior. Are people increasingly favoring companies that are socially conscious and ethically driven? Is there a growing trend of consumers willing to pay more to support companies that actively contribute to worthy causes? As the discussion evolves, our guests emphasize the importance of authenticity in such pursuits, cautioning against false claims of social responsibility that can be damaging to a company's reputation.

Taking the discussion a notch higher, they bring the conversation to the role of personal legacy, citing the inspiring example of former President Jimmy Carter, whose dedicated humanitarian work long after his presidency became a testament to the power of altruistic commitment.

As we navigate this enlightening discussion, we invite you to reflect on the role we can all play in contributing to the well-being of our societies. Whether it's by supporting ethical and philanthropic businesses or actively participating in social causes, every effort counts. And if we all strive to leave the world a little better than we found it, imagine the impact we could create.

So, buckle up and prepare for a thought-provoking journey. If this episode resonates with you, we urge you to share it with others and subscribe to our podcast for more enlightening conversations. After all, the power to redefine society rests not just in our hands, but also in our minds and hearts. As we collectively strive to create a better world, let's remember that each one of us holds a piece of the puzzle. Let's make it count.

Episode Introduction

Welcome to another episode of the Redefining Society podcast with Marco Ciappelli. Today's guest is Dr. Robert Pearl, a professor at Stanford and former CEO at Kaiser Permanente. The topic of discussion is ChatGPT, a technology that has recently made waves in the healthcare industry. Dr. Pearl explains that ChatGPT is a generative pre-trained transformer, which means that it has access to vast amounts of pre-loaded information and can apply it to generate the next word or idea. He compares it to what doctors do when they learn a lot of facts and generate a diagnosis and treatment plan for their patients.

Marco and Dr. Pearl discuss the potential applications of ChatGPT in healthcare and how it can help doctors find diagnoses they might have missed otherwise. While it's still in its early stages, ChatGPT has shown promise in improving patient care by allowing doctors to double-check their thinking and find the most problematic complications that could arise.

The conversation also touches on the challenges of adopting new technologies in the medical profession. Dr. Pearl notes that while it's important to embrace new technologies, blindly following them is not the solution. He highlights the importance of doctors maintaining their expertise and knowledge while using new technologies to supplement their work.

As the conversation continues, the possibilities of ChatGPT become more apparent. Medical knowledge doubles every 73 days, and it's difficult for any human to keep up with that pace. ChatGPT, on the other hand, has the potential to become exponentially more powerful with each passing year, meaning that the tool doctors and patients will have in a decade or two will be significantly more advanced than what we have today.

If you're interested in learning more about ChatGPT and its potential applications in healthcare, then this is the podcast for you. Don't forget to share and subscribe to Redefining Society to keep up with the latest trends in technology and society.

    Episode Introduction

"Meredith Broussard, a data journalism professor at NYU, discusses her latest book "More Than a Glitch" in which she explores the intersection of technology and society. She explains how we need to be more aware of the biases present in computational systems and be willing to protest when unfair decisions are made."

    Welcome to the show!

Today, we have an exciting conversation with Meredith about the intersection of technology and society. Meredith is a data journalism professor at New York University, a researcher, and the author of two books, including her latest, "More Than a Glitch: Confronting Race, Gender, and Ability Bias in Tech."

In this episode, we will explore how the problems of humanity are manifesting inside our computational systems, and why we should not have blind faith in these systems. We will discuss the widespread trust in computational systems, which is rooted in our inability to understand the complexity of the technology. However, with the increasing use of algorithms to make decisions on our behalf, we need to become more aware of what's happening inside these systems. We need to be able to protest when a decision is made that is unfair, biased, or systematically discriminatory.

In "More Than a Glitch," Meredith demystifies AI and explains it in plain language so that people can feel more empowered around computational systems. She argues that we should not think of problems of racism or sexism, or ableism in our computational systems as glitches that are easily solved. Instead, we need to add more nuance to the way we talk about them. This conversation will give you a glimpse into the issues surrounding technology and society that are vital to understanding in today's world.

So, join us as we delve deep into the topic of the intersection of technology and society with Meredith. Share this podcast with your friends and colleagues, and don't forget to subscribe, so you never miss an episode. Let's get started!

    About the book

When technology reinforces inequality, it's not just a glitch—it's a signal that we need to redesign our systems to create a more equitable world.

The word “glitch” implies an incidental error, as easy to patch up as it is to identify. But what if racism, sexism, and ableism aren't just bugs in mostly functional machinery—what if they're coded into the system itself? In the vein of heavy hitters such as Safiya Umoja Noble, Cathy O'Neil, and Ruha Benjamin, Meredith Broussard demonstrates in More Than a Glitch how neutrality in tech is a myth and why algorithms need to be held accountable.

Broussard, a data scientist and one of the few Black female researchers in artificial intelligence, masterfully synthesizes concepts from computer science and sociology. She explores a range of examples: from facial recognition technology trained only to recognize lighter skin tones, to mortgage-approval algorithms that encourage discriminatory lending, to the dangerous feedback loops that arise when medical diagnostic algorithms are trained on insufficiently diverse data. Even when such technologies are designed with good intentions, Broussard shows, fallible humans develop programs that can result in devastating consequences.

Broussard argues that the solution isn't to make omnipresent tech more inclusive, but to root out the algorithms that target certain demographics as “other” to begin with. With sweeping implications for fields ranging from jurisprudence to medicine, the ground-breaking insights of More Than a Glitch are essential reading for anyone invested in building a more equitable future.

    About the book

The long-awaited memoir of a trailblazer and role model who is telling her story for the first time.
Eileen Collins was an aviation pioneer her entire career, from her crowning achievements as the first woman to command an American space mission as well as the first to pilot the space shuttle to her early years as one of the Air Force’s first female pilots. She was in the first class of women to earn pilot’s wings at Vance Air Force Base and was their first female instructor pilot. She was only the second woman admitted to the Air Force’s elite Test Pilot Program at Edwards Air Force Base. NASA had such confidence in her skills as a leader and pilot that she was entrusted to command the first shuttle mission after the Columbia disaster, returning the US to spaceflight after a two-year hiatus. Since retiring from the Air Force and NASA, she has served on numerous corporate boards and is an inspirational speaker about space exploration and leadership.

Eileen Collins is among the most recognized and admired women in the world, yet this is the first time she has told her story in a book. It is a story not only of achievement and overcoming obstacles but of profound personal transformation. The shy, quiet child of an alcoholic father and struggling single mother, who grew up in modest circumstances and was an unremarkable student, she had few prospects when she graduated from high school, but she changed her life to pursue her secret dream of becoming an astronaut. She shares her leadership and life lessons throughout the book with the aim of inspiring and passing on her legacy to a new generation.
