    Is syndication dead?

    Is syndication dead?

The Gannett newspaper chain, which includes USA Today and about 200 other daily newspapers, has selected 34 syndicated comics. Each of its newspapers will be limited to running comics from that list. Any comic that didn't make the list has been shut out of roughly 20% of the existing market. Not surprisingly, most of the 34 are legacy comics whose original creators are long since deceased. This is the end of syndicated comics.

Optimizing the Consumption Experience for Subscribers

Optimizing the Consumption Experience for Subscribers

This episode features an interview with Bjorn Morton, Sr. Director of Product Development at Gannett.

In this episode, Bjorn gives us an inside look at basic vs smarter models of delivering products to subscribers, helps us understand why print isn’t dead, and the importance of continuing to understand the customer experience. Bjorn also shares his perspective on the evolution of physical media into digital media, and how to continue optimizing the consumption experience for loyal subscribers.

    Key Takeaways:

    Kyle:

    • Basic vs smarter models: how it used to be vs how it is: Models should be subscriber specific, it’s not one size fits all.
    • Print isn’t dead: The journey of converting physical products to digital products doesn’t have to be mutually exclusive - let’s make a better experience for the subscriber overall, whether they use a physical or digital product.

    Lukasz:

    • Continue to figure out what the customer experience is: How do you actually deliver the service? Especially if it's a physical product in this digital world. How do you bring in the right readers and subscribers with the right packaging, pricing, etc? Look at innovating current products instead of making something totally new. Making the customer experience better is a process.
    • Crypto can be a valuable perk to subscribers: There are many reasons as to why, but crypto is mostly valuable because it enhances the customer experience and makes the process of purchasing products smooth by working as a cash equivalent, easing the customer journey.

Which Knoxville restaurants and bars need to move downtown?

Which Knoxville restaurants and bars need to move downtown?

Knoxville is full of great bars, restaurants and entertainment venues. Many of them are spread across Knox County, but the Scruffy Stuff team would move a key few of them to downtown. Some of them fill a downtown niche, some just fit the downtown "vibe" and would benefit from operating in the heart of the Scruffy City. Here's our list.

How Knoxville's poet laureate starts hard conversations with her spoken word

How Knoxville's poet laureate starts hard conversations with her spoken word

Knoxville's poet laureate Rhea Carmon, better known as "RheaSunshine," joins The Scruffy Stuff as she wraps up her term as Knoxville's storyteller-in-chief. Rhea talks to us about the power of spoken word poetry to begin challenging conversations around race, class, gender, ability and all the things that separate us. Rhea shares where she gets inspiration and what she's learned during her time as Knoxville's poet laureate.

Patio power rankings: Downtown Knoxville's best outdoor areas (part one)

Patio power rankings: Downtown Knoxville's best outdoor areas (part one)

For fun under the sun, downtown Knoxville has plenty of patios to offer. And as the weather keeps getting warmer, our thirst keeps getting stronger for outdoor spaces to enjoy drinks and food.

Host Ryan Wilusz, along with producer Brianna Paciorka and higher education reporter Keenan Thomas, average their individual scores to determine an admittedly unscientific ranking of patios in the Scruffy City.

Scores are given a letter score, with a special "S" ranking we are calling "the Sunsphere," reserved for patios that should be considered a Knoxville icon. Stay tuned next week for part two!
