Geek Girl Reviews Enola Holmes 2: The Real Game is Afoot! Historical Accuracy, Women Banding Together, and ACAB

We watched Enola Holmes 2! And, in a rare surprise, we don't really agree on our opinion of the movie!

Moni's biggest issue (and it's a good one!) is that the film portrays historical events in a not so accurate way. This brings up a discussion on the line between historical accuracy and creative storytelling - how much can you change history to suit a story?

Here's what else we talked about:

    • where is the line between historical accuracy and creative fiction
    • the true story of the 1888 match girl strike
    • humanising Sherlock Holmes
    • Being your own person
    • the importance of community and not doing it alone
    • creating opportunities
    • police corruption (#ACAB)
    • diversity in role casting
    • women preparing to save women
    • moariarty reimagined

Geeking Out About She-Hulk: The Power of Women Supporting Women

Geeking Out About She-Hulk: The Power of Women Supporting Women

She-Hulk: Attorney At Law is the most fun we've had watching a Marvel show. Maybe ever.

It uses comedy to talk about a huge variety of topical issues super relevant to our society today. Self-acceptance, toxic masculinity, the patriarchy, women supporting women, women dating, looks and appearances, one-night stands, double standards, being fucking awesome at your job, and so much fucking more.

We think it's important to be critical even of the shows that we love, so we are quite critical about She-Hulk. But that in no way detracts from how much we fucking LOVE this and everything it stands for.

Geek Herring & Chill: The Games We're Playing

We wanted to spend some time talking about the amazing games we've been playing lately!

Moni has joined a CULT. The Cult of the Lamb, that is! She's been deep diving into this cute, addictive little game that's taken Twitch by storm. Not only is she playing live on Twitch with her community, she has a second save just for her to play offline.

Amanda's just completed Lord Winklebottom Investigates, a cute AF point and click mystery adventure starring a gentlemanly giraffe. This game was developed by Charlotte Sutherland of Cave Monsters and was worth the wait.

Amanda's also been playing Call of the Sea. While she's not quite finished yet, it's an enjoyable first person mystery adventure around an island in the South Pacific. While it initially gave Amanada white colonizer vibes, it quickly became apparent that there was something else going on.

Geek Girl Reviews The Umbrella Academy Season 3: Positive Trans Rep, Complex Characters, and The End of the World.... Again

The Umbrella Academy is back for season 3, and after two seasons that Moni kept falling asleep during, this one held her attention like woah.

    Spoiler Warning

This entire episode is spoilers. You've been warned!

We couldn't get enough of it. The character dynamics, the character growth, the sibling love/hate relationshps, and the incredibly positive trans representation!

But seriously, this season showcases Viktor's transition in the literal best way possible. It's a 10/10 from us!

We also talk about our favourite characters, least favourite characters, what we love about all the characters, and why Klaus is the best little shit.

Enjoy! We'd love to hear your thoughts as well, let us know on social media or join our Discord!

Geek Girl Reviews Ms Marvel: A Fun, Cultural Masterpiece with Jasmin Joe Star

Geek Girl Reviews Ms Marvel: A Fun, Cultural Masterpiece with Jasmin Joe Star

Ms Marvel is just about the most fun Marvel has ever had creating their TV shows. #Fact. There is so much to love about this show: the characters, the relatableness, the sincerity, the hilarity, the diversity.

We knew we HAD to get Jasmin Joe Star on to talk about her absolute bae of a superhero. Jasmin is THE Ms Marvel expert, and being both Muslim and Middle Eastern, we were even more excited to get her perspectives on what this show gets right. Which, great news, is a whole bunch!

What a breath of fresh air Ms Marvel is! We have positive representations of Muslims. Just normal, everyday interactions of Middle Eastern families. A whole bunch of Partition history you probably didn't get taught in school. AND SO MUCH MORE LIKE ACTUAL SUPERHERO SHIT.

    Spoiler Warning

There are ZERO spoiler free moments in this episode. If you haven't seen it (stop what you're doing immediately and go watch it), skip this episode and we'll see you next week!

Let's get into Ms Marvel! What we love, what we hate, what could've been improved. Jasmin is a wealth of knowledge and an absolute delight to have on!

    About Jasmin

Jasmin is a Marvel expert, specialising in Ms Marvel! She's a huge nerd, self-certified weeb, content creator, cosplayer, gamer, streamer, and photographer. She's a Muslim Iraqi American from LA who is a literal superhero in her dayjob trying to cure and treat cancer!

The characters, the drama, the everything.

We will say that this season is GORY. It is TRAUMATIC. It doesn't have great Black representation. It's SAD. But it all comes together to make for some damn good TV watching.

Geeking Out About TwitchCon: What We Loved, What Could Have Been Better, and Queer Joy!

We went to TwitchCon! And this is what we thought about it!

TwitchCon Amsterdam, July 16&17. We met up with so many streamers and community members we know from Twitch and it was the best time we've had in a long time.

We talk about some of the amazing panels we went to, notably the High Rollers actual play DnD podcast recording, the drag showcase, and the drag panel. We get all mushy about how much we love our Twitch friends. And we talk about some of the things we think could have been improved at Twitch, mainly the LGBTQIA+ panel and accessibility.

We also both came home with COVID-19 - sad times! But we would absolutely do it again, maybe with a few modifications, because the mental health piece of TwitchCon and hanging out with our friends far outweighed being ill for a week.

Did you go to TwitchCon? We'd love to hear about your experiences!

Geek Girl Reviews Heartstopper: Queer Joy & LGBTQIA+ Rep Done Right

Heartstopper just might be the very best show on Netflix right now... or in Moni's opinion, maybe ever!

It follows a group of high school students who are all dealing with their queer identities in their own way.

It's beautiful, candid, heartbreaking, and wonderful. This is the type of positive LGBTQIA+ representation that all shows need to have - and we WISH this was around when we were kids!!

Geek Girl Reviews Moon Knight: Dissociative Identity Disorder, Arab Superheroes, and Egyptian Iconography

Marvel's Moon Knight (available on Disney+) is over and we're in LOVE. Let's talk about Dissociative Identity Disorder, the Egyptian pantheon, and the introduction of Marvel's first Arab (and female!) superhero!

    Spoilers Ahead!

We introduce just who the heck this relatively unknown superhero is, compliment Oscar Isaac on his incredible performance, and chat about the basic storyline of Moon Knight.

We also HAVE to note that we're introduced to the very first Arab superhero, Layla as the Scarlet Scarab, who honestly is such a breath of fresh air. It helps that the director and much of the crew are Egyptian!

Finally, and maybe most importantly, we talk about how Marvel Studies and Oscar Isaac have actually done a pretty spectacular job of accuractly portraining a character with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID).

We both recommend checking out Moon Knight if you haven't seen it yet!

Geek Girl Reviews Hysterical: #MeToo Era Comedy & Beyond

Disney+ has recently released the documentary Hysterical, released in 2021, and we knew we had to watch and review it.

We think everyone should take a look at this documentary, that, from IMDb:

"is an honest and hilarious backstage pass into the lives of some of stand-up comedy's most boundary-breaking women, exploring the hard-fought journey to become the voices of their generation and their gender."

Let's get critical about comedy and remember: women are fucking hilarious!!

Join us as we talk about the Oscars - no, not that event that everyone else is talking about, the achievements that ACTUALLY matter.

We're also talking about the importance of crediting women for their work, especially when it comes to video games! Our favourite heroine, Sam Maggs, was recently left uncredited for her major role as Lead Writer in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.

And we can't NOT talk about Elliot Page's character, Viktor Hargreeves, going through his own transition journey that will be celebrated in season 3 of The Umbrella Academy!

Geek Discussion: Is it still fun when it makes you RAGE cry!?

Geek Discussion: Is it still fun when it makes you RAGE cry!?

Let's talk about those games that are so hard they make you rage. They make you cry. They make you walk away in frustration. ARE THEY STILL FUN!?

This conversation is brought to you by Amanda's obsession with Elden Ring, Moni's love/hate relationship with Celeste, and a wonderful suggestion from our fab community member, MrMillhill.

    We talk about:

    • why we love to rage at games
    • competition vs comparison vs spite
    • the role of community when playing a hard game
    • mentally vs physically challenging games
    • and SO MUCH MORE

We'd love to hear YOUR thoughts, too! Let us know on social media or join our Discord to continue the conversation!
