    The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996)

    The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996)

The Holiday Movie Season continues.....and strangely enough, this one has quite the pedigree: it's directed by Renny Harlin who gave us the underrated Christmas actioner Die Hard 2: Die Harder and it's written by Shane Black who gave us the Christmas classic, Lethal Weapon.  Beyond that, it stars Oscar winner Geena Davis as Charli Baltimore, a former government assassin who contracted amnesia and is now mild-mannered midwestern school teacher with a young daughter.....until of course, former rivals come calling. :o Charli has also teamed up with Mitch Hennessy, a crafty private detective played by Oscar nominee Samuel L. Jackson.....and what results is a quippy, brutal, and entertaining Christmas actioner which more people should have seen while it was in theaters.

A League of Their Own (1992)

A League of Their Own (1992)

Happy 30th Anniversary to this classic fictionalized sports drama about the real-life All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) which was started in 1943 during World War II as a temporary replacement or Major League Baseball as most players were serving overseas at the time – it featured several great female athletes from account the country who had never had the opportunity to play baseball at this level before.  Geena Davis starts as the catcher Dottie Hinson with Lori Petty as her sister Kit who’s a pitcher – they play for the Rockford Peaches who are being managed by Jimmy Dugan played by Tom Hanks in a performance which earned him an Oscar nomination.  The stacked cast also includes Madonna, Rosie O’Donnell, and it was directed by the late great Penny Marshall.  Just in time for July 4th, let’s revisit this tale of America’s Pastime….albeit from a somewhat different angle. 😉

And be sure to learn about "The Madonna Rule" at 7:25!

    Ep. 49: The Fly (1986)

    Ep. 49: The Fly (1986)

Zach & Zo brush off their lab coats to explore the lab of a mad scientist; well, he's not mad at first. It came to pass that by way of a combination of a drunken night of jealousy and a teleportation accident a mild mannered scientist slowly descends into that status of a mad scientist . . . and, as a bonus, over time he realizes that he's mutating into a human/fly hybrid.

Round 49 - Best action movie scene

Round 49 - Best action movie scene

This week the girls took aim at... our favorite action movie scenes

    Bianca
firstly gave us a background in the psychological effects of watching an action movie scene which explained why we are so in love with them. She also discussed some of the most expensive action movie scenes ever filmed (you would be very surprised what the most expensive one was!).

Bianca then discussed her favourite action movie scene which comes from the second Lord of the Rings Trilogy - the Two Towers. Bianca's favourite scene is the Battle of Helm's Deep also called the Battle of the Hornburg. This scene has been described as one of the greatest battle scenes in film history, combining technical mastery, sweeping spectacle, and tonal balance. Bianca agrees with this comment wholeheartedly!

Amy was the meat in the sandwich this week and being the action movie lover that she is, was very excited about this topic. Amy's favourite action movie scene comes from the 1996 movie called The Long Kiss Goodnight which stars Gina Davis and Samuel L Jackson. The scene that she loves the most (she loves every scene in this movie) does feature the swear word most associated with Samuel L Jackson, however, he is not the one who utters it.

Sarah wrapped up tonight's episode by discussing her favourite action movie scene which comes from the movie The Kingsman. Colin Firth is the star of Sarah's favourite scene which is set in a church with loads of action and violence. This led the girls on to a tangent where it was agreed that Colin Firth should be James Bond.

A League of Their Own • The Next Reel

Tom Hanks and baseball — they go together like peanut butter and chocolate. Aside from always wanting to be an astronaut, Hanks has always been a great baseball fan and eagerly jumped at the chance to be in Penny Marshall's 1992 film about the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The film is a crowd pleaser and drew in the crowds when it was released, which was great because it shined a light on an aspect of sports history that had sadly been largely forgotten. Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we finish our Tom Hanks series with a dip back into our spring Baseball series of past years. We talk about how this film came to be, and how Penny Marshall couldn't even find any female screenwriters to come on board to write the script. We discuss the performances and how everyone, from top to bottom, really fits their parts and puts in the work, even if we don't always care for their performances. We chat about the script and how that might be what's leading to some of our struggles with performances as the script really does feel straight out of screenwriting basic training. We talk about the roles of women in sports and in media, how skewed toward men it all is, and how this film does help give better role models for young girls. And we close it out discussing Hanks himself and what these four films in the first decade (for the most part) of his career showed us about who he is and where he'd be going. It's a great film, albeit with a basic script, that highlights a key time in our history, and we have a great time talking about it. Tune in!
