Some things just aren’t adding up about former monk turned podcaster and self-help guru Jay Shetty’s rags-to-riches origin story. But do the specifics of his story mean anything? Or do we feel a tad lied to?

Plus, you’re not imagining it; pants are getting wider. What pants are you wearing right now? If you don’t feel ridiculous in them, you’re doing it wrong.

And, Abigail Shrier is flooding our group chats. She thinks our kids have become too weak, singling out the gentle parents and the therapists. But is she right in saying that defaulting to therapy can do more harm to kids than good?

    106. BITING, KICKING, GRABBING; WHAT DO I DO?-LISTENER Q&A #6

Is your toddler starting to bite, kick, yell, or smack you? Mine is!

In this week's episode, we had a listener ask us what to do about her 18-month-old biting. At first, this mom was modeling how to be gentle and it was helping but after some time her little one was not responding to it and she didn't know what to try next.

Amma will educate us on why these behaviors are coming out and how we can respond to them instead of reacting to them!

    101. SPANKING; DOES IT WORK OR IS IT A QUICK FIX THAT HAS HIDDEN PROBLEMS?

So, to spank or not to spank?

This might seem like a redundant question to some. If you want to deter a behavior and they are not listening, you can make them listen... right?

Many of us were brought up on spankings. But let's call it what it is, hitting. Does hitting our kids really work? That's what we are discussing in this week's topic.

Sure it might seem like a quick fix but what are the consequences? If we are setting the example, the example we are setting is that hitting is ok. And it's not, so what can we do... tune in to learn more.

Learning How to Achieve Emotional Co-regulation with Your Child and What to do When You Mess Up, with Celestyna Wild

Learning How to Achieve Emotional Co-regulation with Your Child and What to do When You Mess Up, with Celestyna Wild

Hello and welcome back to Rad Mom Radio!

This week my guest is Celestyna Brozek Wild. Celestyna is a parent couch who combines multiple neuroscientific and metaphysical modalities into a hybrid therapeutic coaching approach called Deep Change Work.

Deep Change Work identifies unconscious unhelpful patterns in how we perceive ourselves, others, and the world, and updates them in a deep way, not just neo-cortically, but in the lower brain, the body, and the nervous system as well, so the change is accepted by and integrated into the whole system.

Deep Change Work centers and celebrates human complexity and wholeness. This work also brings attention to where modern life is fricative with indigenous and sociobiological aspects of our humanity. Celestyna works with all individuals, but especially loves supporting parents, relationships, and midlife transitions.

In addition to her practice, Celestyna publishes the ARCHETYPOS zine and produces podcasts, including her own podcast, The Surf and Stars Social Club Podcast, where you can listen to live client coaching to get an intimate feel for how she works. Lastly, Celestyna supports families through community events she hosts locally around Denver, CO. To learn more about her work and sign up to receive emails, please visit celestynawild.com

Spitting Images and Gentle Fails: A Bold Exploration of Parenting, Homelessness, and Racial Dynamics

Spitting Images and Gentle Fails: A Bold Exploration of Parenting, Homelessness, and Racial Dynamics

Who would've thought that something as simple as spitting could tarnish a man's reputation, or that the well-intentioned concept of gentle parenting could potentially do more harm than good? I boldly delve into these intriguing topics in the first half of our discussion.

In the latter half of my discussion, I challenge the preconceptions of homelessness and a racially prejudiced nation, taking a hard look at homelessness, crime, and racial dynamics in San Francisco. I'll explore the links between fatherless homes and antisocial behavior, the perception of the rich as looting targets, and the need for a spokesperson within the black community. Using Savannah, Georgia as a case study, I offer a fresh perspective on the racial dynamics in America. Prepare to have your views challenged in this thought-provoking episode.

    Kids and Their Attachments

    Kids and Their Attachments

There are plenty of things we, as adults, are attached to. For example, you may have a favorite hoodie, hat or even a favorite food. These things comfort us when life is being, ya know....life. For our littles, their attachment to us can make us feel special but it can also be the most frustrating thing, especially when you have adult responsibilities to take care of and your little is attached to your hip like that piece of tape that doesn't seem to want to let go! This week, Charisse gives you all the lowdown on how to help build trust in your child when they are having a tough time connecting to the other people in their lives. We know the preferred-parent life can be great, but we also know that parents need a break. So grab a snack because we got you this week! Happy Parenting Friends!

    6. Does Gentle Parenting Work for Both Kids and Dogs

    6. Does Gentle Parenting Work for Both Kids and Dogs

Welcome to Parenting Kids and Dogs 101, a limited series podcast for parents who live with kids and dogs, or plan to. I'm your host, Michelle Stern, the founder of Pooch Parenting. I'm not just a certified professional dog trainer and former teacher, I'm a mom too. In each episode of this series, I hope you'll feel like I'm chatting with you, one parent to another, about life with kids and dogs, answering common questions my clients ask me, and giving you simple solutions to make your life easier and safer.

I hope you'll subscribe and join me for the whole series, and don't forget to grab the accompanying workbook at https://poochparenting.net/podcastworkbook/

I believe in Gentle Parenting - will this parenting strategy work for both kids and dogs?

    • 100% yes. Gentle Parenting relies on understanding and respect. It avoids punishment and instead uses strategies that involve setting healthy boundaries and building strong trusting relationships to set up individuals to be successful.
    • scientific studies have established that in both children and dogs, we see behaviors that are rewarded more often - it feels like coaching
    • this type of parenting can include natural consequences, such as losing access to the dog if the child is too rough. or if the puppy is biting too much, they may need to hang out in a safer space to calm down where they can't bite anymore.
    • we learn to avoid triggers by setting up our kids and dogs for success. If they appear hesitant to do something, we dig in and try to identify why. Are they afraid? too tired? too overwhelmed or confused?
    • By being curious, it can help us to change the environment to make them more successful
    • Gentle parenting should not be confused with being "too soft." We definitely still use limits and set boundaries such as "I can't let you bother the puppy when he is asleep." or "I can't let you kick the dog when you are frustrated." In these circumstances, we would remove the child from the situation to prevent them from doing something harmful.

It's only natural for questions about our kids and dogs to arise from time to time, especially as our babies grow up and our dogs mature. And if I'm being honest, it's not really worth asking for free advice from friends or online because you can't rely on the accuracy of the feedback you are getting. If you'd like to learn more about The Pooch Parenting Society, where I offer practical life and science-based tips and strategies, ongoing support and a safe place to share, head on over to www.safekidsanddogs.com. From one parent to another, I see you and I promise, you're not alone.

Prioritizing the Lesson in the Moment

Prioritizing the Lesson in the Moment

Life is full of lessons. For kids, those lessons, just like life, can come at them quick. As parents, we have to use our judgement to decide when and where to teach those lessons. When our little is having a full meltdown, trying to teach them why whatever happened to them is causing issues isn't the best time. We parents have to have better timing because if we really want our kids to learn the lesson, then they need to be in a state that allows them to take in the info you are trying to teach. This week on the podcast, Charisse discusses when it’s the right time to teach these lessons and how to make sure your child actually listens and learns from that lesson! Happy Parenting Friends!

    Corporal Punishment & Gentle Parenting

    Corporal Punishment & Gentle Parenting

In today's episode I talk about my distain for corporal punishment and how I go about using gentle/conscious parenting to raise my kids. I focus on a video that I saw which makes a joke out of abusing your kids for discipline and how this is harmful to the conscious parenting movement. Not to mention that these videos are seen as normal to thousands of parents who think monetizing your kids is safe and a "good thing."

Join me every other week for more topics like this, and leave me a comment or a DM on Instagram to let me know what other topics you'd like me to talk about next!

Keeping Your Cool When Kids Get Spicy

Keeping Your Cool When Kids Get Spicy

Whoever said patience is a virtue never had kids. Keeping our cool while your little one is having a full meltdown in the middle of the aisle at the grocery store, isn't the time to be virtuous. Sometimes, the best way to combat that spicy child of yours is to not react to the screaming and crying by being the example of calm and peace that your child can rely on to guide them through the latest emotional outburst. Like Bruce Lee once said "You must be like water" Happy Parenting!

Meeting Everyones Needs Through Non-Violent Communication

Meeting Everyones Needs Through Non-Violent Communication

We all have needs, but trying to figure out what our tiny humans need at any given time can be one of the most frustrating things about being a parent. We get it! It’s hard to get to the heart of the mater when our kid is having a full blown tantrum in the middle of Target. But, there's a path to making sure that your little gets what they NEED in that moment but also so you get what YOU need in that moment too. This week on the podcast, Charisse gives you the tools to be able to address their needs as well as yours using Non-Violent Communication or NVC. How we communicate with our kids can be the difference between discourse and peace. Happy Parenting!
