Musicology professor Caleb Boyd discusses Oscar Levant, the multi-talented pianist, actor and wit who appeared regularly on the Information Please radio quiz program, the film version of which we will run at the Columbus Moving Picture Show. Boyd will present a seminar at the event in May.

Join us as we begin our next miniseries, this time talking about unknowns who were turned into megastars, practically overnight, and the songs that made it happen. Our first shooting star is one of the grandest of Broadway grand dames, the utterly unique Ethel Merman, and her first Broadway showstopper, "I Got Rhythm" by George and Ira Gershwin, from 1930's Girl Crazy.

Since 1930 was before the age of the cast album, all clips are from the 1949 album Ehtel Merman: Songs She Has Made Famous featuring Ethel Merman are used in accordance with the Fair Use Exemption for criticism and commentary.

When Fantasia was first created, Walt Disney originally intended for the film to be updated every few years with new segments, new animation styles, and new compositions of music. Finally, nearly sixty years later after the original’s release, his nephew and studio made good on that dream, bringing us over an hour of new Fantasia content showcasing how far animation had come set to new and exciting classical music.
