Embracing Change: How AI is Revolutionizing Podcasting and Professional Sports*

FRIENDS! AI came up with that title and it is hard not what I would have chosen for myself 🤣

*Alternative title (human generated): Taking the Time to Learn New Skills or Giselle F*s around with AI

AI generated episode description with [my comments] thrown in all over the place because, again, WTF AI?:

Ever wondered how AI is revolutionizing the podcasting landscape and professional sports? You're about to find out. [I mean, you're not. I talk about how we need to take time to learn new skills in our careers to make sure we're still developing and not staying stagnant. I talk abut how hard it is to overcome the inertia of doing things the same way you've always been doing things.] Join us as we share our personal experiences of how AI is impacting our podcasting business, from generating captions to crafting engaging content. If you've ever felt resistance in breaking away from established systems and processes, we’ll walk you through the importance of harnessing a growth mindset to embrace novel ideas. We even delve into the creation of a dot phrase, revealing how a little upfront effort can save you time in the long run. [Rest of this is true, and oh, Epic, what fun!]

Our conversations move from the world of podcasting to the arena of professional sports, as we reflect on how being open to new methodologies can be a game-changer. Remember that strength and conditioning coach who introduced blood flow restriction training 11 years ago? [Haha, yeah, do you remember that guy?? Probably not if you didn't work with me, but I do talk about how we integrate new knowledge and skills and the work settings that might make that easier or harder.] We discuss how such unconventional strategies can revolutionize athletes' performance. [Eh, not so much.] We also debate on the philosophical implications of AI and its potential to be the next big thing in knowledge enhancement and skill acquisition. [I mean I specifically said I didn't want to get the philosophical debate, but yes, I did talk about AI as potentially being the next evolution in knowledge enhancement.]

And that's not all! We also explore how AI can support women in sports and athletics, its usage in social media, and the challenges and excitement of using AI for generating podcast content. Ever thought of using a chatbot to come up with an engaging podcast episode title, intro music, or show notes? We did just that! [And I might be regretting it!] Listen in as we embark on our intriguing journey, allowing AI to create our podcast title [again, see regrets], show notes, and social media posts. Our discussions seek to inspire you to break away from inertia, embrace change, and upgrade your skills to soar in this AI-dominated era.

Building a Team with NWSL’s Chief Medical Officer Cindy Chang, Part 1

Building a Team with NWSL’s Chief Medical Officer Cindy Chang, Part 1

On today’s episode, I’m talking to sports medicine physician Dr. Cindy Chang about building a team.

Cindy is currently the Chief Medical Officer for the National Women’s Soccer League and one of my heroes in sports medicine. She is a Professor Emeritus in Family Medicine and Orthopedics at UCSF and the former head team physician at UC Berkeley. As the first Chief Medical Officer of the NWSL, Cindy is building medical care teams and protocols from the ground up, all in the name of these athletes’ health and well-being. For the first time ever on Madam Athlete, we’re breaking this up into two parts because there was just too much to share! This is part one of two of my conversation with Cindy.

    We talk about:

    • Bringing all of your outside interests and past experiences to work
    • Applying for jobs even when you’re not 100% qualified
    • The benefits of looking at roles outside of your current organization

Welcome back to another special episode of the Madam Athlete podcast! On the second Tuesday of the month, I take a deep dive into a career-related topic, and on today’s episode I’m asking you who are you outside of your job.

    Because I believe that:
1 – We should be more than our jobs, that we are more than our jobs, and our jobs don’t define us.
    And...
2 – Having hobbies and a life outside of work is part of what helps us actually do better at work.

Going Where You’re Valued with Coach and Paralympian Stephanie Wheeler

Going Where You’re Valued with Coach and Paralympian Stephanie Wheeler

On today’s episode, I’m talking to coach and Paralympian Stephanie Wheeler about going where you’re valued.

Stephanie is the head coach of the women’s wheelchair basketball team at the University of Illinois. An alum of the program herself, winning three national championships, as well as being a two-time Paralympic gold medalist, Stephanie is no stranger to success. Despite her success, she has still faced discrimination and is one of the few women head coaches, and one of the very few head coaches with a disability, in a sports world that continues to be dominated by men. After leading Team USA to a gold medal at the Rio Paralympics as the head coach, Stephanie decided to focus all her energy on coaching her team at Illinois, where she could live out her values in an environment that supported her as a whole human being.

    We talk about:

    • How you can’t do what you can’t see and Stephanie’s journey from first meeting a woman athlete with a disability as a teenager to becoming an athlete herself, and then a coach and mentor to other athletes like herself.
    • Why defining our values helps us to create identities outside of our jobs and sport.
    • Stephanie’s ongoing work to overcome internalized sexism, ableism, and homophobia and divest from the voices that don’t matter.

Ready for the Next Challenge with Orthopaedic Surgeon Stacie Grossfeld

Ready for the Next Challenge with Orthopaedic Surgeon Stacie Grossfeld

On today’s episode, I’m talking to orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Stacie Grossfeld about being ready for the next challenge.

Stacie has her own orthopaedic practice in Louisville and values the independence she’s found as a surgeon employed outside of a hospital system. To keep her practice running, Stacie is continually learning new skills to stay fresh and current. She purposely avoids falling into the trap of thinking that her expertise in one field, like medicine, is enough to make her successful in another, like her businesses.

    We talk about:

    • How Stacie first considered a different pathway to pursue her vision of helping people and athletes return to sport before deciding that orthopaedics was right for her.
    • How in order to create balance with whatever else was going on in her life, Stacie has created boundaries in her work but has also allowed them to change and adapt over the years.
    • The way Stacie runs multiple side businesses and attributes her success to making sure that her focus is always on the task at hand.

Celebrating 100 Episodes of Madam Athlete! (And Title IX, Women's Rights, and Next Steps)

Celebrating 100 Episodes of Madam Athlete! (And Title IX, Women's Rights, and Next Steps)

Hello new or loyal fan of the podcast!

Let me start by saying thank you for listening to the 100th episode!!!

This episode is going to be real. My honest thoughts, beliefs, values. I’ll talk about what led me to start the podcast and where I want it to go in the future. And I will be talking about women’s rights so let me just say up front so there is no confusion – women’s rights are human rights. I’ll also check in on title IX, on what some past guests are up to now and share a call to action with you. This might be the most blunt and real I’ve been on the podcast so far, and you’ll hear about that and why that makes me uncomfortable. But, like I’ll talk about, it’s important. Oh, and I swear. Because I swear. So that will be happening too.

    Enjoy!

Would you consider celebrating this incredible milestone by leaving an excellent rating and review on apple podcasts (where you might be listening to this episode right now?)?

And maybe share this episode with a badass women in your life who you think will benefit from being introduced to the podcast.

Serving Your Mission with Olympian and Coach Leah Stancil

Serving Your Mission with Olympian and Coach Leah Stancil

On today’s episode, I’m talking to Olympian and coach Leah Stancil about serving your mission.

Leah is the current head coach for Tulane swimming and diving and one of just two Black woman head coaches in DI swimming. As an athlete herself, Leah competed for her home country of Barbados in two Olympics, reaching the finals in 1996. Leah always knew that she wanted to help athletes overcome their struggles and found that coaching gave her the chance to do just that while working one-on-one with swimmers on the frontlines of her sport.

    We talk about:

    • How Leah realized that her impressive resume would be viewed differently if she were white or a man.
    • When Leah was diagnosed with breast cancer before her second year as head coach, she was fortunately told to focus on her health. She both relied on her husband for support and learned to delegate to her coaching staff.
    • Leah tries to recognize the “yeah, but” moments in her self-talk that keep her from appreciating her day-to-day accomplishments.

Are You Ready for Change or Are You Feeling Stuck?

Are You Ready for Change or Are You Feeling Stuck?

Welcome back to another special episode of the Madam Athlete podcast! On the second Tuesday of the month, I take a deep dive into a career-related topic, and on today’s episode I’m asking you if you're ready for change and sharing a specific framework to help you tease out where you might be getting stuck moving forward in whatever new direction you're aiming for.

    Here's the thing...

Your brain doesn't actually like change.
It wants to feel pleasure, avoid pain, and keep things easy (like stuff it already knows how to do).
    So change is hard!

I'm talking about Dilts' Logical Levels of Change in today's episode which is a framework for personal development (and change), that can help you identify where you need to make in order to have the biggest impact on getting after your new goal.

Shining a Spotlight on Women’s Sports with Cyclist and Podcaster Elizabeth Emery

On today’s episode, I’m talking to cyclist and fellow podcaster Elizabeth Emery about shining a spotlight on women’s sports.

Elizabeth is the host of the podcast Hear Her Sports where she interviews women athletes and is helping to redefine and expand the coverage on women’s sports. She’s a former professional cyclist and national team member who knows firsthand the additional obstacles placed in front of women athletes. Elizabeth’s also no stranger to embracing multiple identities. In addition to being a cyclist and podcaster, she is also a multidisciplinary artist whose work has been shown in museums and galleries throughout the US.

    We talk about:

    • How Elizabeth turned her favorite part of the day, commuting to work on her bike, into a professional cycling career.
    • Wondering what would have happened in her own sports journey if she had had more women role models with careers in sports.
    • Shocked by the number of her early guests who shied away from calling themselves athletes, Elizabeth has come to embrace the term and the power it provides.

How to Be Proud of Yourself

Welcome back to another special episode of the Madam Athlete podcast! On the second Tuesday of the month, I take a deep dive into a career-related topic, and on today’s episode I’m talking about how to be proud of yourself.

It is important to be proud of yourself and I'm talking about a positive pride instead of a toxic pride. And yes, I explain the difference!

The benefits of being positively proud of yourself include improved self-worth, self-respect, mood, and overall sense of well-being.

I walk through some of the reasons it's hard to learn how to be proud of yourself and share several steps you can take to get past those barriers, find your self-worth and pride, and start practicing being proud of yourself right away.

Carve Your Own Journey with Sports Medicine Physician Phatho Zondi

On today’s episode, I’m talking to sports medicine physician Dr. Phatho Zondi about carving your own path.

Phatho knew from a young age that her mission was to serve athletes and she’s carved out a path unlike any other. She’s worked with athletes at every level of competition and found ways to use sport as a tool for social change. She recently served as the CEO of the Sports Science Institute of South Africa and, with a keen sense of who she is and her own strengths, now takes on projects as an independent consultant to promote transformation in sport science.

    We talk about:

    • The barriers she faced as a young Black woman physician in South Africa that helped her realize that she could only show up as herself.
    • Phatho knew her mission was to serve athletes and their health and she’s done so at every scale, from the one-on-one level to the institutional level.
    • She advises everyone to know the difference between aligning to the expectations of others and being the author of your own story.

Rebecca’s journey has been anything but straightforward. From studying art in college before going to med school to later leaving medicine only to return after running an injury prevention business for runners, Rebecca has always chosen the path that best reflects what’s right for her at that particular moment in life.

    We talk about:

    • How Sarah defined her values and used them to guide her through every twist and turn of her career.
    • The parallels of embracing the uncomfortable both in sports and in life to meet goals and pursue new opportunities.
    • Her focus on the process, rather than the result, led to her current role with gWell, where she can help share information on the many facets of sports medicine with a wide audience.
