Episode 211: The Great Dechurching: Michael Graham

Episode 211: The Great Dechurching: Michael Graham

We are currently experiencing the largest and fastest religious shift in U.S. History. It’s called dechurching and it impacts more people than the First and Second Great Awakening and every revival in our country combined...but in the opposite direction.

Very little study had been done on dechurching until Jim Davis and Michael Graham commissioned the largest and most comprehensive study of dechurching in America by renowned sociologists Dr. Ryan Burge and Dr. Paul Djupe. Together, they share their findings in their new book The Great Dechurching: Who’s Leaving, Why They are Going, and What Will it Take to Bring Them Back? – released today!

This week, Jonathan welcomes Michael Graham to Candid Conversations to discuss the dechurching shift. What you will hear is shocking, but also encouraging – because there are tangible steps you can take to help stem the tide.

Michael Graham is Program Director at The Keller Center for Cultural Apologetics. He is also the executive producer and writer for the As In Heaven podcast. He received his MDiv at Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando. He is a member at Orlando Grace Church and he is married to Sara, and they have two kids.

Episode 191: It's Not About You: The Importance of Biblical Theology with Nancy Guthrie

Episode 191: It's Not About You: The Importance of Biblical Theology with Nancy Guthrie

In this episode of Candid Conversations, Jonathan welcomes author and teacher Nancy Guthrie who highlights the advantages of examining the Scriptures through the lens of holistic Biblical theology. By shifting our focus from ourselves to God when studying the Bible, we can experience the text in a more profound and accurate way.

Nancy draws from her personal experiences, including her work in publishing and the tragic loss of two children, to illustrate how God intensified her love for His Word.

As an esteemed author, host of the Help Me Teach the Bible podcast at the Gospel Coalition, and a Bible teacher at her local church in Nashville, Nancy frequently leads her popular Biblical Theology Workshop for Women at national and international conferences. She and her husband also established Respite Retreats, which offer support to grieving couples.

In this powerful episode, we delve into the multifaceted aspects of God's character and His unwavering love for us to gain a deeper understanding of His Word. Let us be inspired to move beyond seeking how the Word of God applies only to us and instead discover who God truly is and what we can learn about His attributes and essence.

Ds. M.K. de Wilde over John Owen en puriteinen vandaag

Ds.

Countdown To Christmas: Tenacious Faith (Luke 3)

Countdown To Christmas: Tenacious Faith (Luke 3)

Every day leading up to Christmas we will be reading, studying, and reflecting on a chapter of the Gospel of Luke. There are twenty-four days leading up to Christmas and twenty-four Chapters in Luke. We are going to enter the celebration of the birth of Jesus with a full context of his life and ministry. My hope and prayer for each of us is that we fully experience a closeness to Jesus like never before.

A majority of Luke 3 is dedicated to arguably one of the most compelling characters in the Gospels perhaps one of the most confusing too, John The Baptist. Who was he? What was his purpose? We look at that as well as looking at one of the most famous Bible "contradictions" that critics use to show the flaws of the Bible: the biological genealogy of Jesus.

This is the VERSED podcast; a daily pursuit to become more perceptive to what the Bible says.

If you would like to dive deeper into certain verses in the Bible, have a verse you would like to submit to have included in a future episode, have questions about the Bible that you would like answered in a bonus episode, or simply want to connect with me... text VERSED to 88474 or click here

Also included in that link is a list of resources and references I use in this podcast and can help you grow deeper in your faith as well.

Where Is God In All of This?

Where Is God In All of This?

I heard Elisabeth Elliot define suffering as having something you don’t want or wanting something you don’t have. That can come in many extremes however big or small but it fits in that definition. There have been hard things in my life just like yours. I can’t say that I know what you’re going through but I can say that I know the one who knows. It’s through the deepest suffering that I’ve learned the deepest lessons. If we trust Him for it be can be assured that He’s got this, he has a loving purpose and he can turn something terrible into something wonderful and that suffering is never for nothing.

If you would like to dive deeper into this, or other verses in the Bible, if you have a verse you would like to submit to have included in a future episode if have questions about the Bible that you would like answered in a bonus episode, or simply want to connect with me... text VERSED to 88474 or click here

RE-VERSED: Walking With the Wise? Or the Fools?

RE-VERSED: Walking With the Wise? Or the Fools?

Have you ever heard the phrase, “You are the average of your five closest friends?” Or another way “You are known by the company you keep?” It’s true right? I’ve found it to be. The people that we choose to surround ourselves with have a strong influence on our beliefs and actions. Until the day we die, the people around us and their expectations shape who we are and what we think. Today’s passage makes this very point as it calls us to acquire wisdom by walking with the wise.

It could be a question you've had for a long time. It could be a question you don't think you need to ask. It could be a question that you needed to be reminded of. Regardless, the answer will change your life.

Pastor TJ Tim’s: Understanding the Church and The Gospel

On the 29th episode of All Heart with Paul Cardall, Nashville Immanuel lead pastor T.J. Tims, who holds a PhD from the University of Aberdeen and a theology degree from King's College London, joins Paul Cardall in a discussion about the state of the Christian church. If people claim to be Christians, where do they get the right to tell people how to live? Where does this authority come from? Also explored is why T.J. felt called to be a pastor and what does that mean for him. These and other questions are answered by T.J. in this insightful episode of All Heart with Paul Cardall.

What Are the Most Common Objections Against Christianity?

What Are the Most Common Objections Against Christianity?

Don Carson and Tim Keller share their experiences regarding evangelism and apologetics in a university context over the past 30 years. Don argues that in some ways, because of the post-Christian atmosphere that now exists in the US and Europe, evangelism is easier than it was in the past because of the ignorance of Judeo-Christian values that were still being rebelled against.

Keller suggests that the exclusive claims of Christ and how a good God can send anyone to hell is one of the main challenges that offend students today. Answering skeptics with a question like, "So you don't mind if Hilter or Idi Amin go to heaven?" Keller suggests that this brings the theoretical argument back to reality and helps set a baseline for a better and more serious conversation.

Christianity, Keller argues, makes a way for salvation for anybody who asks for the mercy of Christ, through genuine repentance—be it the abuser, the prostitute, the mafia man who kills people for a living. People who are humble enough to ask for a savior are in and the people who are too proud and self reliant are out. Once you can get to a more serious conversation, it becomes clear that everyone holds an exclusive view of who should go to heaven. It's often the case that Christianity is a more inclusive exclusivity than that of the skeptic.

Another objection that Carson finds prevalent in evalgelistic contexts today is the offensive of sin before a Holy God. Because the majority of people today view sin as a sociological or cultural definition, this is a particularly difficult challenge he often faces. Without a proper view of sin, the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross makes no sense.

Keller ends with an illustration of a mother who sacrifices greatly to put her son through school only to have the son ignore her, which he finds helpful to try and press into that issue with skepts to show how sin is a real offense against God.

In this episode, Carson recommends a helpful book by Randy Newman called, Questioning Evangelism.

Episode 6: Nancy Guthrie's Fight for Joy (Part 1)

Episode 6: Nancy Guthrie's Fight for Joy (Part 1)
I am honored to have my friend and mentor, Nancy Guthrie, on the podcast today! Nancy is a writer, Bible teacher, conference speaker, a contributor for The Gospel Coalition, and host of the Help Me Teach the Bible podcast. Nancy and her husband, David, live in Nashville, Tennessee, with their son, Matt, living close by. They have two other children, a daughter, Hope, and a son, Gabriel, who were both born with a rare genetic disorder and both died within their first year of life. Having experienced the brokenness of this world in heartbreaking ways, Nancy has fought for joy by finding comfort and hope in God’s Word, trusting in His sovereignty, and helping others see the trustworthiness and beauty of Scripture, and the help that it provides. For many years, Nancy has served as a mentor and influential teacher in my life. Her books and studies have equipped and helped me as I have studied the Bible, and her ministry has greatly encouraged my walk with the Lord! After Jackson died, she embraced me as a friend and fellow grieving mom and has tenderly walked with me these past 5 years. It is such a blessing to learn from a friend who is a number of years ahead of me on this grief journey. As I have mentioned in previous episodes, the Guthries host weekend retreats for couples who have lost a child, and attending one of the those retreats shortly after Jackson died has been one of the most helpful things for us in grief. Nancy is a gracious friend and a wise teacher - I’m so grateful for her willingness to record this episode with me. Today you will hear Part 1 of our conversation.
