    Episode Introduction

"In this episode of the High Alert Institute podcast series, we introduce their work with NASA for space healthcare and AI medicine, including the need for an autonomous AI system that would provide guidance and care needed in non-Earth civilizations and habitats. They also explore how this AI system would interact and coordinate with human doctors in space."

Welcome to the third episode of the High Alert Institute podcast series. In case you missed the previous episodes, we highly recommend that you catch up with them, as we've had some fascinating conversations on the work that the High Alert Institute is doing to help society. In this episode, Marco Ciappelli, Dr. Maurice Ramirez, Allison Sakara, and Sean Martin, will be discussing the work the Institute has been doing with NASA for space healthcare and AI medicine.

Their work with NASA started many years ago when the High Alert Institute worked with the government agency for disaster preparedness planning and education. Over time, they were approached by International Space Law experts, who were involved with the International Space Court Foundation, to help with moot courts on space healthcare issues. The Institute's board members and experts were already fans of sci-fi, and this project was a fun and exciting challenge.

As they dug deeper, they found that the regulations that have been in place for space healthcare over the last 60 years, based on cruise ship rules, won't work going forward, especially on the Moon or Mars, where there are no regulations or oversight of who is qualified to practice healthcare. They needed an autonomous AI system to provide the guidance and care needed in non-Earth civilizations and habitats.

In this episode, Maurice, and Allison discuss their findings, including the need for an algorithmic framework for this AI system, which would be satellite-based and would help regulate and transfer data. They also discuss how this AI system would interact and coordinate with human doctors, who would need to be technical people, working the knobs and pulling the levers on the system as well as understanding how the human body functions.

If you're interested in learning more about the relationship between technology and our modern society, we highly recommend that you subscribe to the Redefining Society podcast, hosted by Marco Ciappelli.

Tune in to this episode to learn more about the High Alert Institute's work with NASA for space healthcare and AI medicine, and how they're preparing for the future.

The Future Of Media. The Ship Of Theseus And When Is A Book Not A Book Anymore? | A Conversation With Mark Herschberg And Sean Martin | Redefining Society Podcast With Marco Ciappelli

In its original formulation, the "Ship of Theseus" paradox concerns a debate over whether or not a ship that has had all of its components replaced one by one would remain the same ship. Is a book in a digital format still a book? How about an Audio Book?

Follow us in this interesting conversation about the evolution of media and what it means for our society, our knowledge, and our education.

    Episode Introduction

Technology has the potential to be the Social Equalizer — yes, with education, of course — but is it?

Well, education is not that either, but that is a story for another time. In this episode, we talk about the Data Divide, which, just like the Digital Divide, has become a social phenomenon that puts underserved and marginalized categories in the unfortunate condition of not taking advance of the Digital Age as they should and could.

But pay attention as it is different. So often, when we talk about Data, we discuss the fact that organizations, governments, and companies are taking WAY TOO MUCH DATA, and we need to stop them from doing so. But not all Data is the same. There is the one taken to spy, sell, market everything, and somehow control citizens — depending on where you live and who you are — and there is the “good” data, the one that can help you to stay healthy, get a job, get an education, and overall get you in the societal loop that we all need nowadays to thrive.

So, divide, in this case, means that if you are on the wrong side of it, things are getting worst at the same rate that technology gets better. Well, you‘ll get what I mean in this episode of Redefining Society, where we talk about these topics and much more.

    Tune in, and listen up!

Walled Internets, Disinformation, Propaganda, And The Mouth Of Truth | A Conversation With Charity Wright | Redefining Society Podcast With Marco Ciappelli

Walled Internets, Disinformation, Propaganda, And The Mouth Of Truth | A Conversation With Charity Wright | Redefining Society Podcast With Marco Ciappelli

What has become of the ideas and the vision of the World Wide Web? Well, many things have changed since "circa 1993", and amongst many good things, a plethora of unexpected consequences came in the same bag.

In this episode of redefining society, we talk with our friend Charity Wright about what is the reality of the internet today when it comes to the many ways that social media have been utilized to spread ideologies, misinformation, propaganda, and, more often than not, lately, pure and unaltered lies. From walled internets controlled by authoritarian countries to the subtitle, and not so subtitle, way to change realities even in free democratic nations, we have gone a long way from that original vision of what the WWW could have been.

We are still hopeful that the truth in our societies will ultimately prevail, even if we need to adjust the social contract for the digital age that we are already living. And if worst comes to worst, there is still The Mouth of Truth — see you in Rome!

    Enjoy!

Why Has Work-Related Burnout Become Such A Recurring Topic? We Look At Business Culture And The Changes That Could Help | A Follow-Up Conversation With Stacy Thayer Ph.D. | Redefining Society Podcast With Marco Ciappelli

Why Has Work-Related Burnout Become Such A Recurring Topic? We Look At Business Culture And The Changes That Could Help | A Follow-Up Conversation With Stacy Thayer Ph.D. | Redefining Society Podcast With Marco Ciappelli

Work is defined as “an activity involving mental or physical effort done to achieve a purpose or result.” Ok, but does it have to suck, being stressful, and burning people out? No! Let’s discuss this.

Lately, at least in the cybersecurity and technology industry, talking about burnout has become a common topic. There are talks at conferences, some companies are addressing the issue, and plenty of articles in many newspapers and magazines.

It certainly is not a new thing, but why do we talk more about it nowadays, and are we doing enough to address the issue?

In this podcast, we welcome back Stacy Thayer and open the conversation to a societal view. It is not just one industry problem but is something that may have deep roots in our society.

Join us and let us know your thoughts.

About the session, "Trying to Be Everything to Everyone: Let’s Talk About Burnout"
Research shows computer security professionals describe the computer security industry as a high-risk yet high-reward profession with negative effects on the workforce. There is an estimated 805,000 computer security professionals working in the US, but meeting the business demand for computer security professionals would require 62% industry growth. This leaves those in the field understaffed and highly stressed, ultimately leading to burnout. Stress and burnout can lead to mental fatigue, which can negatively impact motivation and engagement. It can also cause diminishing focus and performance levels, and have a negative impact on operational security, satisfaction, and performance, both in the office and at home. This talk will discuss the existing research on burnout in the computer security industry and will discuss what really causes burnout, why it happens, and what you can do to mitigate it, including setting healthy boundaries, avoiding guilt, realistic ways to manage anxiety, and honest self-talk so you can identify what is needed to refill your energy and passion.

I will discuss how to recognize burnout in hidden places and explore the root causes of it.

I will address what to do about it – going beyond simply meditation, exercise, and healthy eating. If it was that easy, we would all be doing that. This talk is unique in that it will utilize a knowledge of practical psychology to keep it real and use behavioral change models as a guide for reducing burnout. How do you find motivation, appreciation, and time for yourself when it feels like the world around you is demanding you give more? You will leave this talk with a better understanding of how burnout happens, your personal relationship to burnout, and an idea of what to do to help reduce, relieve, and manage it.

Leading Smart Cities With Trust | A Conversation With Austin Zwick, Daniel Nelson, And Lan Jenson | Redefining Society Podcast With Marco Ciappelli

Do cities need technology in order to be smart? Can “smart technology” alone turn a dumb city into an intelligent one? The human is still the most crucial piece in the machine — in this case, all the city inhabitants: those who run it and those who live it.

In this podcast we talk about the Leading Smart Cities with Trust program. A first-of-its-kind professional certificate, to learn from leaders in government, academia and the private sector how to gain a solid foundation of knowledge for all Smart City initiatives while building a professional network.

The Leading Smart Cities with Trust program is a selective and rigorous educational initiative offered through a partnership between the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs and the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University.

This may be the way to prepare the future of those that run our future cities.

NFTs Can Be A Game-Changer For Musicians, Other Artists, And Maybe Can Empower Many Small Businesses Too. We Talk About What’s Feasible And What’s Ideal | A Conversation With Connor Borrego Part 2 | Redefining Society Podcast With Marco Ciappelli

Have you heard any stories of artists struggling to make a living from their artistic passion and skills lately? Have you heard of NFTs? Well, maybe you should listen to us trying to put the two together and see what we come up with.

Welcome to another episode that starts with ONE, TWO, THREE… and while the first one was about Web .3, this time, we deliver a good hour of thinking around NFTs and the many opportunities they can bring. In particular, we focus on the music industry, the artists, the fans, and how this can be extended to other forms of art and small business.

Of course, we must agree on what can be done at the present time and what we could ideally achieve with new technology, and maybe we didn't do that. But we all agreed upon one thing: it takes knowledge to get started and thrive with technology.

Enjoy this conversation with Connor Borrego — the second one, so be sure to catch the first one too!

The Case For Letting People Work From Home Forever | A Conversation With Jaclyn Greenberg | Redefining Society Podcast With Marco Ciappelli

Why should we return to the office instead of being more productive and happier working from home? Maybe someone likes to work there, meet people, and get out of the house? To each its own, then. Why not?

During this podcast, we talk about the many good reasons why we should let people work from home, but as we do so, we also realize that many enjoy the office working lifestyle, and each one should be able to choose what fits their personality the most.

The truth is often in the middle, and a hybrid solution might be the right one.

1, 2, 3 … NFT… and WEB .3 For those of you that are still figuring out WEB .2, it may be time to skip ahead and envision an internet where users can regain the ownership of their data — and identity too? Can we really? Let’s start with the basics: what is web .3?

In the podcast, Sean joins Marco, and they ask A TON of questions to Connor Borrego, a web3 nerd who wants to help users reclaim ownership of their digital identity.

He got us thinking that maybe a better internet is in reach and wondering about what that could look and feel like.

What Is And What Is Not A Virtual Human? More Than An Influencer And A Fashion Statement? | A Conversation With Digital Creative Writer, Specializing In Content For Virtual Influencers, Astrid Hiort | Redefining Society Podcast With Marco Ciappelli

What Is And What Is Not A Virtual Human? More Than An Influencer And A Fashion Statement? | A Conversation With Digital Creative Writer, Specializing In Content For Virtual Influencers, Astrid Hiort | Redefining Society Podcast With Marco Ciappelli

Influencers help brands to sell products by creating content on social media — the concept is certainly not new. How about virtual ones? It depends on what we assume "virtual" means because, in the advertising field, it is not new either. The technology makes this different, but humans are still in the machine.

The point is that testimonials have been around since the beginning of advertising, as such virtual ones. You can think of celebrities, authorities in the field, fictional characters, and cartoon characters. As technology has evolved, so have the techniques to create and make them more believable, likable, engaging, relatable, and even more real.

Nowadays, there is a tendency in our society — well, marketing is responsible for a lot of that hype —  to use the words Artificial Intelligence, Augmented, and Virtual Reality, even when it is not precisely that. Nevertheless, our society is moving faster on the technology highway, and some blurriness is justified. Sometimes.

So these virtual influencers, also called virtual humans — what are they, and, most of all, what are not? What do they do, and what they could do?

Maybe they are not exactly sentient, but there are human that makes them seems so.

Confused? We were too. So we invited on the show Astrid Hiort, a digital creative and journalist, specializing in content for virtual influencers and digital fashion.

Join us, or maybe our digital twins?

How NASA’s Space Exploration, Technology, And Security Positively Impact Humanity | A Conversation With Renee Wynn And Steve Luczynski | Redefining Society Podcast With Marco Ciappelli

Even if you want to refuse to look up or you believe the Earth is flat, it doesn’t change the truth about Space Exploration: it has an impressive track record of improving our life here on the ground. So many aspects of our well-being, our security, and the growth of humanity as a whole depend on it.

In this podcast, we are joined again by our long-time friend Steve Luczynski from the Aerospace Village and our new friend Renee Wynn, former CIO at NASA.

The stories they shared with us kept us glued to the chair, and we had to force ourselves to cut the conversation — as it could have literally lasted forever. From security in space and in our skies to the technology invented, developed, used up there, and then applied to our everyday life; to the essential questions about why we explore the unknown and it is so vital for the future of humanity. We covered a lot but only touched the surface. We guarantee that we will keep telling many more of these stories.

Grab your popcorn, look up, and listen to this podcast!

Ukraine Invasion: Lessons On Cyber Warfare (WAR) And Its Impact On Humanity | A Conversation With Grant Gibson | Redefining Society With Marco Ciappelli

Ukraine Invasion: Lessons On Cyber Warfare (WAR) And Its Impact On Humanity | A Conversation With Grant Gibson | Redefining Society With Marco Ciappelli

Some say that nobody wants war, and yet here we are. They are different because technology has changed, but they still suck. Is there a clear distinction between cyber and kinetic warfare? Does it even matter? What can we learn about it from this war in Ukraine?

Despite the distinction between different kinds of war for headlines and panel conversation, war is war. Under that horrible word, you can line up as many strategies, tools, and methodologies as you like, but once something is used as a weapon against others, it all sounds like war. In today’s conversation with Grant Gibson, we discuss what is happening in Ukraine and how what we are observing is unique, either in the techniques used or in how those are used. An underground cyberwar is going on, which is part of a larger war. Tinder reveals troop locations; amateur drones are taking part in the action discovering and helping to destroy vehicles on convoys, civilian hackers take up arms, and Microsoft and other tech companies play support roles. All the while, leaders try to strategize cyber protocols in wartime theaters.

This will be a moment that defines cyber warfare — well, warfare.

Spoiler alert, you can call war what you want; it is still something that shouldn’t exist — in any form.

The Power of Story with Matt Scott

The Power of Story with Matt Scott

Matt Scott is the Manager of Storytelling & Engagement with Project Drawdown, a nonprofit organization that seeks to help the world reach “drawdown”—the future point in time when levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere stop climbing and start to steadily decline. Since the 2017 publication of the New York Times bestseller Drawdown, the organization has emerged as a leading resource for information and insight about climate solutions.  Matt Scott focuses on passing the mic to those who often go unheard in the climate space.  In this conversation Nina and Matt explored how storytelling and data work together to shift thinking and behavior.  Matt also shared the five barriers to climate action.  Nina was happily surprised to learn Matt is a fan of co-active coaching!

Cryptography Everywhere | Protecting Data In Systems, Apps, And Communications - Is It Resilient Enough For What The Future Holds? | Redefining Society With Professor Kenneth Graham Paterson

Cryptography is now everywhere in the online world; but how do we know that it’s doing its job properly?

Security of “messaging systems” like WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, etc. How do they work? What security do they offer? How do we know they're any good?

And those are just a few questions for today's reality where we tend to trust that the cryptographic algorithms in user are fairly resilient. What Impact will quantum computing have on cryptography in the future; a reality we must prepare for since quantum computing is developing rapidly. To be prepared for this, we must first understand quantum computing itself and what it means for conventional cryptographic systems. Only then can we determine how (and how well) we are getting ready for it.

Underserved People Need Free Access To Learn Digital, Social, And Business Skills | Redefining Society With Dr. Susan Birne-Stone and Busayo Odunlami

Positive cultural and societal changes do not happen in a day, but they need to start somewhere, and indeed they do not happen by magic. Education is a key driver that can promote, facilitate, and speed up such changes.

Contact of different societies, technological evolution, and geographical and ecological factors can initiate societal changes that can take quite some time. Still, sometimes we need to improve our communities faster, which is when movements and organizations can speed up the pace.

In today's podcast, we talk about how providing underserved young people with free access to the digital, business, and social skills required to be successful in today's technology-driven global economy can change not only the lives of individuals but also bring much more significant positive consequences in our modern societies.

    Billion Strong Foundation
To achieve economic independence, we believe there are a billion energetic, determined individuals that, if given a chance, will eagerly acquire the digital, social, and business skills necessary to succeed in today's ever-changing global environment.
We want to inspire and uplift young individuals, across the globe, to build future products and services while creating new jobs and new businesses that serve their communities and society. We believe that our framework supports the transformation required for individuals to develop the entrepreneurial spirit required to exist in a technology-driven world.”

A Metaverse That Is Diverse, Inclusive, Accessible And Safe For All. Why Not? Seriously! | A Conversation With With Eve Logunova-Parker | Redefining Society Podcast With Marco Ciappelli

The Metaverse, VR, XR, and much of the social technology we are developing today can and should be used for good. We have an ample opportunity to use it for good or look back one day and regret we didn’t.

In this conversation, we spoke about what is the driving force that is leading the commercialization of VR, XR, and the Metaverse, but also all the paths we could take to create a virtual world that doesn’t have to carry the bias we are trying to fight in the one where we live our daily life, for now. Instead, there is hope for diversity, inclusion, accessibility, and openness for all.

    About Eve
Eve's life mission is to make technology more inclusive and accessible for people of all walks of life, with a special emphasis on building inclusive solutions by DeepTech companies themselves.  With data becoming every company’s best asset, Eve truly believes that AI ethics, Inclusion by design, diverse datasets as well as tech teams are vital in achieving progress toward a more inclusive workplace as well as society at large.

    About the Respect Project
