    Riflestock accuracy & consistency

Few things are worse than an equipment failure when you're about to take a shot at a buck, bull, ram, or boar of a lifetime. One of the least suspected but frequent culprits of shots going astray in the field are inconsistent riflestocks. This episode with accuracy nut Austin Brown digs deep on how to maximize the accuracy potential and consistency of your rifle's stock—and is generously supported with hunting stories to make our points. Ok, ok: This episode is mostly hunting stories with a few good pointers. ENJOY!

He is known for his expertise in building high-performance custom firearms and has worked with many law enforcement and military agencies to develop custom firearms for their needs.

Gray’s interest in firearms began in his early teens when he started shooting with his father. He later went on to serve in the United States Army and worked as a police officer in California. During this time, he became increasingly interested in firearms and began tinkering with his own guns, eventually leading him to pursue a career as a gunsmith.

Gray has worked with a number of firearms manufacturers over the years, including Kimber, Springfield Armory, and Sig Sauer. He is perhaps best known for his work on 1911-style pistols, which he has customized for competitive shooters, law enforcement agencies, and military units. He is also known for his work on the Sig Sauer P320, which he has modified for competition use.

In addition to his work as a gunsmith, Gray is a highly accomplished competitive shooter. He has won numerous national and international shooting competitions, including the Steel Challenge, the USPSA Open Nationals, and the IPSC World Shoot. He is also a sought-after instructor and has trained law enforcement officers and military personnel in the use of firearms.

Gray continues to be active in the firearms industry and remains a respected figure in the competitive shooting community. He is known for his attention to detail and his commitment to providing high-quality custom firearms that meet the needs of his clients.

In this episode, Bruce talks about:

–How he tested the P320 for “out of battery” shooting and what his results were.

–What he recommends is the best spring set for shooting the P320.

–How he is incorporating new training methods to rethink his shooting.

AJ Zito is a gunsmith and practical shooter. He designs and makes custom 1911s and also competes in action shooting sports such as USPSA and IDPA. He is one of the few people I know that has actually gone to a three year gunsmithing school (something that sounds incredibly cool!) AJ currently is one of the assistant instructors with Scott “Jedi” Jedlinski from Modern Samurai Project and travels to many of the classes with him around the county.

I had a really nice talk with AJ and look forward to hearing more from him as he starts up his podcast again.

    The Gun Room: Episode 7

Coming to you from Sanford, North Carolina, and the annual Southern Side by Side Championship and Exhibition at Deep River Sporting Clays. I have the opportunity to sit down with Steve Durren and Glenn Fewless, two professional members of the American Custom Gunmakers Guild. Steve and Glenn are President and Vice President of the Guild respectively. We snuck away from the action at the Southern to talk about the Guild, its foundations and purpose, and what it means to be a professional member. We also speak about gunsmithing and gun making, and the differences between the specialties within the guild. We dive into the process of working with guild members to create your special bespoke shotgun or rifle, detailing at length the process. We end with a bit of conversation about single-shot falling block rifles, which happen to be something of a specialty for both of our guests.

Charles Newton: The Forgotten History of the Wildcatter Who Created the .22 and .250 Savage

Charles Newton: The Forgotten History of the Wildcatter Who Created the .22 and .250 Savage
On this episode of the Resistance Library Podcast Sam and Dave talk about the wildcatter, Charles Newton.

Wildcatters are a specific subset of firearms enthusiasts – nerds among nerds, if you will. And their king is Charles Newton.

Newton was an attorney whose wildcatting was a hobby, not a career. However, his work in the world of wildcatting resulted in what is a sort of crowning achievement for a wildcatter: A company took up one of his creations, the .22 Savage Hi-Power, which Savage Arms began making officially in 1912. Soon after this, Savage began manufacturing the .250-3000 Savage (also known as the 250 Savage).

The 22 Savage boasted a high velocity for the time it was developed, which in turn led to a shocking display of power. Its killing power was seen as nothing short of miraculous for larger prey with relatively soft skin, such as tigers – this was the golden era of big-game hunting and the African safari. Reverend H. R. Caldwell brought notoriety to the round by using it to bag 400-pound tigers in China. This was exploited to great effect in the early advertising for the round.

FNP 077 : Bruce Gray - Shooting with No Emotion

FNP 077 : Bruce Gray - Shooting with No Emotion

Welcome back to the Firearms Nation Podcast. About ten years ago I had the pleasure of being invited to a class devoted to pulling the trigger properly.  It was a class on the basics but it wasn’t a basic class.  In fact it was as someone coined it “..a PhD in trigger management”.  This class also put me in touch with a renowned gunsmith and competitor Bruce Gray.  Bruce and I maintained a friendship since that class and I even call him a mentor.  And it was at the USPSA National Championship in 2014 when Bruce reached out to me right after the match with a text “Do you want to shoot for Team SIG?”  He didn’t have to ask twice.  For the next two years I had a blast shooting matches with a great group of guys and gals all running the new P320.  That gun is still my competition gun and I also use it for duty.

Bruce has always been know as the go to guy to have your SIG or Sig Sauer pistol worked on to make it shoot even better.  But since the P320 came around, his business took off with parts for it as well as SIG’s successful LEGION series.  His company, Gray Guns, has grown and is in the process of moving to a bigger warehouse.  More recently, Bruce dove back into competition and he is revisiting his methodologies that are now over 20 years old.  I discuss with Bruce the differences as well as how us, as shooters, can over come our emotions while we shoot.

FNP 039 : Randy Lee - Apex Tactical Master Gunsmith

Randy Lee is the president and gunsmith at Apex Tactical, a company that specializes in gun parts for pistols.  Apex took off when they introduced a replacement sear for the Smith and Wesson M&P pistol line which made those gun shoot much better with a better trigger pull.  From that moment on, Apex Tactical was always the go to part for any M&P and now Glock, CZ and even FN.  Apex further their skills by releasing a “Apex Grade” barrel for the M&P which is capable of a sub inch group at 25 yards!

What I learned from Randy was: Flat triggers can help you with your trigger pull 2) that adjustable rear sights can be used for every day carry and 3) Apex Tactical is working on their own HANDGUN!  I can’t wait to see what that will look and shoot like.  Congrats Randy…
