In spite of a Senate hearing in which Gina Haspel repeatedly evaded tough questions about her views on torture, it appears that she will be confirmed as the new CIA director. Enough senators were apparently mollified by her qualified assurances that there will be no more “enhanced interrogation” at the spy agency on her watch.
But John Kiriakou, who as a CIA insider exposed the original torture program in — and ironically was the only government official who went to prison over the issue — thinks that Haspel is actually a true believer in torture.
In his conversation with WhoWhatWhy’s Jeff Schechtman, he reminds us of all the opportunities she has had to renounce torture and the torture regime she presided over. Had she done so, Haspel could have changed her legacy, as well as the legacy of those who supported her in her efforts. But time and again she chose not to.
Kiriakou is still surprised by how few people have come forward to speak out against what happened. He believes that there are still many in the agency who want to recapture its vaunted “cowboy authority.”
Even as director of the CIA, Kiriakou says, Haspel may not be able to turn the clock back to 2001. But with Trump egging her on, anything can happen. And if the CIA does resume torture of any kind, the senators who voted for Haspel will shoulder part of the blame and should be held to account.

9/11 Terrorist Mastermind To Choose Head of CIA?
Insanity: Khalid Shaikh Mohammed wants to stop Gina Haspel’s confirmation - and 'inmates running the asylum' want to let him!The terrorist mastermind of 9/11, Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, is currently imprisoned in Guantanamo, awaiting his appeal to be heard against being put to death. He has asked to be heard at the confirmation hearing of Gina Haspel before the Senate Intelligence Hearing. Mohammed undoubtedly wants to drop a bombshell about her alleged role in torturing terrorists. If his request isn’t insane enough, his attorneys are pushing for it to happen.
Mohammed was captured in 2003 and tortured, though it has not been reported that it was Gina Haspel who directly tortured him. Nor has it been proven that we did not get some worthwhile information from him in this process.
Has everyone gone mad? Are we in such denial of 9/11 that we think it is reasonable to allow the mastermind of this attack to tell Congress who should be head of the CIA - a body who is entrusted with protecting us from terrorists?

The recent revisionist history about Gina Haspel, Trump's nominee for CIA director, should make very little difference in examining the totality of her record on torture and its cover up.
According to John Kiriakou, a 15-year CIA veteran, and the whistleblower on the CIA covert torture operation, Gina Haspel is the “godmother of the torture program.”
Regarding ProPublica's correction of the record of her involvement, Kiriakou says that while she may not have actually overseen the torture of Abu Zubaydah, she did arrive at the secret CIA black-op site in Thailand in time for the waterboarding and torture of at least one other detainee, Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri.
Kiriakou explains to WhoWhatWhy’s Jeff Schechtman how Haspel was also a key link in the destruction of the 92 tapes that contained the evidence of torture. She ordered the tapes destroyed, even though they had become federal records. They were shredded counter to the advice of White House and CIA counsel. Kiriakou reminds us that her defense of “just following orders” is far too reminiscent of Nazi apologia circa 1945.
On the basis of her “dark history,” Kiriakou argues that Haspel is clearly a poor choice for leadership of the CIA.
