    Ep.105 The Magnificent Seven (1960 Vs. 2016)

    Ep.105 The Magnificent Seven (1960 Vs. 2016)

A small town is being victimized and stripped of its resources by profiteers and villains. With what little they have they hire a small band of mercenaries to help fight off the evil plaguing them. Based on the screenplay and film by the acclaimed Akira Kurosawa, Seven Samurai, The Magnificent Seven takes that classic story from feudal Japan to the American old west.

Director John (The Great Escape) Sturges put an all-star cast together for the original 1960 version with Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, Eli Wallach, Horst Buchholz, Robert Vaughn, Brad Dexter, and James Coburn. That filmed spawned three sequels, a television remake and television series. Director Antoine (Training Day) Fuqua would bring the Seven back to the silver screen with Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D'Onofrio, Byung-hun Lee, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Martin Senmeier, Haley Bennett, and Peter Sarsgaard.

Invasion of the Remake puts on their dusters and travels back to a time where seven men dared to take on an army. Are both movies magnificent or will one be a misfire? Join Jason, Sam and Trish on a ride only Invasion of the Remake can take you on this week's episode.

Ep. 16 - The Magnificent Seven

Ep. 16 - The Magnificent Seven

The good thing about this remake of a remake? It's co-written by Nic Pizzolatto, who wrote the first season of True Detective. The bad thing? It's co-written by Nic Pizzolatto, who wrote the second season of True Detective. But that doesn't stop Ron from blowing your minds with this star-powered action romp about a group of cowboys defending a small town from... Peter Sarsgaard? Starring Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D'Onofrio, and Haley Bennett. *MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD*

This week on Total Movie Recall, Steve and Ryan drop their ironic, cynical pose and reveal the wounded romantic inside. Steve tells us how this movie helped him during those in-between-relationship periods of booze and ice cream, Ryan reflects on his parents' mortality, and the boys conclude that adulthood and growing up are a sham.

On his way to Vienna, American Jesse (Ethan Hawke) meets Celine (Julie Delpy), a student returning to Paris. After long conversations forge a surprising connection between them, Jesse convinces Celine to get off the train with him in Vienna. Since his flight to the U.S. departs the next morning and he has no money for lodging, they wander the city together, taking in the experiences of Vienna and each other. As the night progresses, their bond makes separating in the morning a difficult choice.

Oscar Podcast #23: FINAL Oscar Predictions...AHHH!!!!!

Oscar Podcast #23: FINAL Oscar Predictions...AHHH!!!!!

In Oscar podcast #23, Gold Rush Gang member Peter Cioth and myself, Erik Anderson, tear through all 24 Academy Awards categories to find the answer to the single question, "Who Will Win?"

While many categories seem locked and loaded (how could anything beat The Grand Budapest Hotel in Production Design or Julianne Moore in Best Actress?) not only do we have lower-tier categories up in the air, the BIG ones are too. Best Picture and Best Director are a juggling, jockeying back and forth of Boyhood or Birdman, Linklater or Iñárritu. And every combination between them. The problem is...they ALL make sense. What we do know is that no matter which of two wins we'll be looking at a new stat, a new precedent and something to talk about in future races besides Ordinary People or Apollo 13!

So sit back and listen as we discuss the seriousness of this Oscar dilemma and hopefully, enjoy.

Attack of the Killer Soundtrack: Lisa Loeb

Attack of the Killer Soundtrack: Lisa Loeb

Attack of the Killer Soundtrack #19 - Attack of Lisa Loeb

This week we sit down with an artist who sat at #1 on the Billboard charts, went on to sign a major record deal, followed by a Grammy nomination - all of which stemmed from having her song on a movie soundtrack. That's right Lisa Loeb, seemed like the perfect guest to have on Attack of the Killer Soundtrack. So we talk with Lisa about just how her song ended up on the Reality Bites soundtrack and what it was like to have a #1 hit single before she even had a recording contract. And all the massive changes that kicked in so quickly. Plus putting a full album together after having such a successful single, as well as crossing over into acting in film... plus several other endeavors! She’s a busy woman these days, and we are glad to have her join us on this week’s episode. Plus Lisa gives us her Killer Five music picks from soundtracks over the years.

And as we keep our eyes upon the dream and go for it, someone also mentions… Jan De Bont, Gabe Kaplan, New York City, Katniss Everdeen, Brown University, just getting busy, Ethan Hawke, drinking a lot of champagne and driving in limos, being independent, putting yourself into a different character, focusing more on visual, second guessing is a loser sport, One small step for man…, Ben Stiller, walking around with headshots, Elizabeth Mitchell, 80 messages on my machine, getting it out there “for real”, Danny Elfman, one step for… me, 52nd street, when you get inspiration from outside of yourself, it’s a really fun, interesting puzzle to put together, regular music cycles, illustrated books, Stewart Copeland, live theater and the Purple Tape.

“...having music placed in soundtracks... that’s really one of the best ways to get an income from being a musician - and also one of the best ways to get your music heard.“
