Episode 17: Walking through The Chaos of Grief with Licensed Therapist Sue Foster

When it comes to walking through the chaos of grief, the journey is always a difficult one. This is especially true of suicide grief, when we lose a family member or friend to suicide. That is why we are so blessed to have Licensed Marriage and Family therapist, Sue Foster, on today's episode.

Sue shares her own story of suicide grief and what her life looked like as she walked through that grief. She also shares how suicide grief impacted her faith, and how she found support groups and resources that helped her process that grief.

Sue walks our listeners through the signs we can be looking for in someone who might be debating taking their own life, what to do in the immediate aftermath of a suicide, handling emotions like guilt or shame in the aftermath, and how to create a deep, faith-based support system to help you through this journey.

    Who is Sue Foster?

Sue Foster is a Licensed Marriage and Family therapist with over 20 years’ experience working with clients on a variety of issues including: Relationships, anxiety and depression, women’s issues, abuse, stress and burnout, setting boundaries, and grief and loss.

Sue's years of counseling experience have included working with several people who have lost loved ones to suicide. Anyone who has dealt with a suicide knows this is a loss that can be more traumatic than other types of losses and the healing process is longer and more complicated.

In addition to counseling survivors, Sue has co-authored a book for survivors from a faith-based perspective, Finding Your Way After the Suicide of Someone you Love. She now also leads support groups for survivors and has spoken at conferences and workshops on suicide.

062: The Impact of Unresolved Grief with Judy Lipson

062: The Impact of Unresolved Grief with Judy Lipson

What is the impact of unresolved grief?

What happens when we fill our days with busy tasks to ignore the grief we feel inside?

Eventually the pain will overflow and become present in other areas of our lives. So why do we bury our grief? What is the emotion we’re trying to push down and avoid?

Joining me for this conversation about unresolved grief is Judy Lipson.

Judy Lipson is the sole survivor of three sisters, losing her sister Jane in 1981 at age twenty-two in an automobile accident, and nine years later her sister Margie at age thirty-five after a twenty-year battle with anorexia and bulimia.

For thirty years, Judy suppressed her grief and in 2011 founded Celebration of Sisters, an annual ice skating fundraiser to commemorate the lives and memories of her beloved sisters Margie and Jane to benefit Massachusetts General Hospital. Skating is a sport the Lipson sisters shared and brought Judy full circle back to her sisters.

Judy published articles for The Open to Hope Foundation, The Centering Organization, Grief Healing, and Love and Loss. Massachusetts General Hospital and SKATING Magazine featured numerous pieces on Judy’s philanthropic work. Judy has appeared as a guest on The Open to Hope, The Morning Glory, Surviving Sibling Loss, Where’s The Grief, Good Grief and U.S. Figure Skating Voices From The Ice Podcasts.

Her passion for figure skating secured the recipient of U.S. Figure Skating Association 2020 Get Up Award.

Judy’s memoir, Celebration of Sisters: It Is Never Too Late To Grieve, released December 2021 by WriteLife Publishing. www.judylipson.org

    The Beauty That Sustains Us

    The Beauty That Sustains Us

Growing up, Kathryn Schulz and her sister’s favorite nights were the ones their dad narrated his own stories about the adventures of Yana and Egbert from Rotterdam; A town he chose because he knew it'd make them laugh. The intentionality behind Isaac’s stories are representative of the abundance of love he aspired to share with his daughters — The love Kathryn now shares with her own.

This is where Kathryn’s memoir, Lost & Found, begins and ends. In chronicling her experience losing her father and simultaneously falling in love with her wife, she illustrates our capacity to find beauty in life’s duality.

“It is helpful to remember that beauty exists and beauty persists; And, that we can choose to side with it, champion it, and protect it."

Kathryn shares her journey grieving her father, from experiencing grief as a thousand tiny heartbreaks to acknowledging that acceptance and longing aren’t mutually exclusive. Then, beginning in the midst of his illness, her relationship showcases love’s capacity to enrich the totality of our lives.

Lost & Found is an invitation of healing and hope. Perhaps most importantly in the recognition that while love and loss are often marked by beginnings and endings, it’s savoring the middle that truly matters.

    Episode Highlights

    [04:38] Gunny’s Background and His Brother’s Passing

    • Gunny grew up in a household with Ayurvedic practitioners. But he didn’t understand its power until much later.
    • In 2006, his brother got into a tragic car accident that led to his death. They were planning to meet that day.
    • When he heard the news about the accident, Gunny's body went into fight or flight mode.
    • He recalls being in a zombie-like state from the moment he arrived at the hospital until they spread his brother’s ashes.

[08:00] Facing Grief and Processing Emotions

    • He interpreted the advice ‘be strong’ to mean that he cannot show any emotion.
    • However, he has realised that true strength comes from feeling the emotions of grief and sadness.
    • When you feel your emotions, you allow them to be released.
    • Resisting emotions hinder you from experiencing the resilience of the body and the mind.

    [09:56] Getting Diagnosed with PTSD

    • Gunny didn’t allow himself to feel his emotions. Six months later, his dad diagnosed him with PTSD.
    • He experienced deep anxiety and depression, suicidal thoughts, and every manifestation of suppressing his feelings.
    • Without allowing yourself to process emotions, your body will forcefully put you through it once you want to move on.
    • Gunny got to a point when he was sick and tired of feeling sick and tired. He knew he had a choice, and he wasn’t going to be that way for the rest of his life.
    • He then went to his father for help. His dad knew about his situation but never interfered because he knew Gunny wasn't ready.

[11:33] Learning How to Deal with Emotions

    • His father instructed him to start meditating, change his diet, do yoga, take Ashwagandha, and focus his attention on his life.
    • When his father said that his situation at that time was no longer grief but suffering, it all clicked in Gunny’s head.
    • He then diverted his mind to creative things. He went all-in on entrepreneurship.
    • Gunny felt better week by week. After five weeks, he realised he was totally fine.

[13:22] The Power of Ayurvedic Techniques

    • Ayurveda involves different techniques on how the mind works and how quickly you can shift it.
    • Gunny carried on the Ayurvedic techniques he applied in dealing with his grief years later.
    • If he goes back to that experience now, he reckons he would have gotten himself out of it in two weeks.
    • He founded YouVeda to give people the resources he didn't have.

[17:33] The Mind to Body Connection in Ayurveda

    • Ayurveda emphasizes the mind to body connection. Furthermore, it stresses balance in the mind, body and spirit.
    • Each of us has a unique dosha constitution and a dominant dosha. But we can rotate in and out of doshas throughout the seasons and circumstances of our life.
    • Ayurveda is a 5000-year old practise that stresses the science of life. Its essence is to live in balance within yourself, the universe, and nature.
    • Ayurveda’s most important point is that ‘as the mind conceives, the body follows’.
    • It’s about continuous balance in whatever we do.

[20:18] How Science is now Validating Ancient Practices

    • Ancient traditions have existed for many years and are now getting scientific validation.
    • One example is the mind to body connection in the gut that impacts our health.

    [21:05] Gunny’s Ayurvedic Background

    • Gunny's father studied Ayurveda in India. Because Ayurveda wasn't licensed in the US, he became a naturopathic doctor.
    • Since Ayurveda and naturopathy are similar modalities involving the mind to body connection, his father combined them in his practice.
    • His uncle and aunt followed suit from his father.

    [22:06] YouVeda’s Products

    • Doctors with 45 years of clinical experience are responsible for developing their products. His father is also an advisor.
    • YouVeda has products for different modalities: mood, digestion, joints, immunity, overall body.
    • They’ve combined the greatest natural ingredients with modern science.
    • YouVeda has supplement kits incorporating everything you need in a convenient packet.
    • They also give resources in addition to the products, depending on the modality you choose.
