She is a Harvard trained nutritional psychiatrist, professional chef and nutrition specialist, and the author of ‘This Is Your Brain On Food.’ She founded and directs the first hospital-based nutritional psychiatry service in the United States and is the Director of Nutritional and Lifestyle Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital and Director of Nutritional Psychiatry at MGH Academy while serving on the faculty at Harvard Medical School. She tells us about her own path on discovering food and health, and how it can affect your body, especially your mind or mental state, and then the link between your gut and not being able to sleep, for example.

I’m gonna make a stir fry with you later.’ I just find that whole interaction, you know you don’t need to have too much, steps along the way. Yeah I just find it very freeing.” 15:37

We discuss things such as the volume of what you eat will need to increase when you switch because being plant based requires that you eat more to get sufficient nutrients, and then the types of food we eat ourselves and the social, mental, and physical effects we experience when making this change.

In this episode we wanted to talk about what our plant based journey has been, why we went plant based, and how it has actually gone. Kristel tells about what changed her outlook on her diet when she learned that everyone has cancer cells inside their body and sometimes those cancer cells will grow based on how we eat. Michael explains that it was when he started reading up on the CDC website that up to 50% of disease can be prevented by what people choose to put into their bodies.
