    Peter's Escape From Prison

    Peter's Escape From Prison

King Herod (King of the Jewish people) persecuted Christians and ordered the arrest of the apostle Peter. The whole church was very afraid, so they gathered together in a house to pray. While they were praying, an angel visited Peter’s prison cell and miraculously released him. Peter found his way to the house where the church was praying. Peter then went into hiding.  Herod continued to seek public approval desperately and even allowed people to praise him as if he were God.  An angel struck Herod with an illness, and he died a terrible death.

The Curse Of Success (Business Devo)

The Curse Of Success (Business Devo)

    Reference:

    Acts 12:20-24

The story of King Herod's obsession with fame that led to his gruesome death highlights the danger ambitious people face if they don't have wisdom or humility amid success.

    Summary

The episode examines the tragic story of King Herod in Acts 12, who built incredible monuments to his own glory but refused to give praise to God. Though Herod achieved great power, wealth, and the worship of people, Scripture says he did not give glory to God. As a result, he was struck down and "eaten by worms" in a gruesome public death.

This story demonstrates why humans aren't built to receive worship or hold onto fame, but need wisdom and humility even amid success. So many celebrities or public figures have seen early fame or influence ultimately lead to the destruction of their lives. Fame is presented almost as a "curse" or siren song that can lure people in by catering to pride and ego.

For ambitious entrepreneurs and leaders pursuing big goals, you must examine your motivations. Are you seeking position or influence primarily for selfish recognition? Even if you achieve great things, that pride is dangerous without pointing back to God as the true source. As Jesus said, "What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?"

The episode gives practical tips for gaining wisdom and avoiding the pitfalls of fame:

    1. Don't directly pursue fame only for its own sake
    2. Develop wisdom early on to handle attention or influence
    3. Give glory to God rather than taking all the credit

True humility means embracing your abilities and being confident in your identity, while refusing worship of yourself and acknowledging God as greater. Handling fame wisely comes down to letting praise flow through you rather than getting stuck in pride. As Herod learned the hard way, humans simply aren't built for others' worship - pride goes before a fall.

    Top 3 Growth Tips

    • Fame Obsession Destroys Lives - Herod is one of endless examples of fame leading to downfall when praise isn't given to God. Be extremely wary of pursuing influence for ego.
    • We Aren't Meant for Worship - Scripture teaches that humans don't have capacity to receive glory or worship. Pride is dangerous.
    • Let Praise Flow Through You - Any fame/success should be channeled to point to God, not boost self. Give glory away.

The Other Three Kings - Audio

The Other Three Kings - Audio
"During the time of King Herod," is how Matthew frames the Nativity story. Knowing my Advent Scriptures very well, I knew Luke 2 began naming off some other names. Caesar Augustus. Quirinius. My clever preacher’s mind clicked, knowing especially that the Three Kings we sing of, have been pretty much proven through historical research, they were never really kings. Yes, they had an audience with King Herod, thus they must be some sort of social elites, but they were probably not kings. Herod, Quirinius, Augustus – these are the other three kings.

He even killed his own children as a sacrifice to foreign gods. God would not tolerate this and so he sent the armies of Aram and Israel to raid them and take captive their men. But even in this punishment, God had a plan to protect those who were innocent and to remove those who led them astray.

Pilate, who knew Jesus was innocent, washes his hands clean and releases Jesus to be crucified. This story is inspired by Matthew 27:12-26; Mark 15:2-5; Luke 23:2-25 & John 18:28-32; 19:12-15. Episode 211: The crowds drag Jesus to Pilate demanding his approval of the death sentence. Pilate, however, takes Jesus aside to learn more about who He is. After taking Him aside, Pilate brought Jesus back out to the crowd to dismiss Him since he had found no wrong in Him. But the crowd would not have it! So Pilate sent Jesus to Herod, but neither did he find Jesus doing anything worthy of death. Finally, Pilate gave the crowd a choice, set Jesus free or set Barabbas - a murderer and insurrectionist - free. But the hate was too strong in the hearts of the crowd and they pushed for Jesus to be crucified.

When Paul Turned the Tables at the Temple - Audio

When Paul Turned the Tables at the Temple - Audio
Christ turned over tables at the Temple and upset the religious order. He did that the day after Palm Sunday according to Matthew Mark and Luke. Paul symbolically is doing the same thing. Paul’s imprisoned for what happened at the Temple. However, in his court battles he’s managed to turn the tables. He’s turned the tables on the Sanhedrin because he’s exploited their animosity towards him and each other concerning the Resurrection. He’s turned the tables on Felix because he’s given him true implications to dread, concerning the Resurrection of the just, and in Felix’s case, the unjust.
