Important Questions That All High School Students Should Ask Their High School College Counselors for Success in College Admissions. Be Proactive and Exercise Your Personal Leadership On This!

#080 – On this episode, Jankel and I present a very important person in the college admission aspirations of high school students, the high school college counselor. We discuss the enormous workloads that are placed on the desks of counselors, who on the average are assigned with guiding 500 students through their college admission process. In some states, high school college counselors are assigned as many as 1,200 students. Considering the huge time and resource limitations in which counselors have to carry out their duties, we provide advice for high school students to follow to create the best working relationship with their counselors. Additionally, we go over 15 questions that all high school students should ask their high school college counselors, regardless of their grade level. These questions are designed to ensure that students achieve a successful college preparation and are able to meet or exceed the admission requirements of the colleges and universities to which they want to apply. #003 – On this episode of the CMP we speak with experienced college consultant and all-around great guy, Keegan Ash from Ash College Consulting. Keegan offers advice to parents and students to avoid the college admissions mishaps he has witnessed through the years.

We talk about the important role “listening” plays in connecting with kids and the value of establishing a “Game Day” with your teen. You will be surprised to find that is not what you may think it is! However, it is very important in establishing good communication with your teen in matters related to college admissions.

Keegan also talks about the difficult job high school guidance counselors in public schools have as each tries to help hundreds of students get into college, how important it is for parents to uncover their motivations for the college advice they give their kids, and the $40,000 mistake he made years ago when he was getting ready to go to college. Financial Aid Advice That's Too Good To Be True: Separating the Myths from the Truth
Can you really reposition family assets to create more financial aid eligibility? Are there ways to hide assets and lower your expected family contribution? Is it possible to get colleges to consider your child financially independent of you? Former Tufts and Boston University senior financial aid officer Shannon Vasconcelos will stop by to address college finance myths and offer real, ethical tips that everyone can use to maximize financial aid eligibility. Kathy Ventura, who heads up the guidance department for Wallington High School in NJ, will join us to discuss how to get the most out of your relationship with your or your child's guidance counselor. Former Tufts University senior admissions officer Becky Leichtling and I will also talk through how the high school that students attend impacts their college applications. Don't forget to send us your admissions and college finance questions at gettingin.voiceamerica@gmail.com. We'll answer as many as we can in our final segment.
