The Dakhini Language

The Dakhini Language

Dakhni is one South India's major languages, but many of us don't even know the language by name. A language spoken in parts of Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra, Dakhni has a 600+ year history of literature, traditions and widespread use.

Professors Zabiulla and Shanthkumar Patil are on Episode 31 of Thale Harate to help us understand Dakhni better. They talk to Surya Prakash BS and Pavan Srinath about the language, its history, how it differs from Urdu and share many proverbs in the language.

Mr Zabiulla is a Urdu professor at the Government First Grade College in Channapatna and Mr Shanthkumar Patil is a professor at the Government First Grade College in Chitguppa, Bidar. Zabiulla has recently published a book called Dakni Kahawaten, crowdsourcing and compiling over 500 proverbs in Dakhini. Currently available in Urdu / Nastalik, efforts are underway to have it available in Kannada as well.
