REPLAY! George Feltenstein: A Career in Classic Film Marketing

This is the first of our REPLAY podcasts, where we revisit some of our early hidden gems, compilations, and most popular episodes.

    Episode specific description:
Prepare yourselves, film buffs and cinema enthusiasts, as we embark on a fascinating journey through the ever-evolving film and home entertainment industries with none other than George Feltonstein of Warner Brothers. We'll be tracing George's illustrious career, from his roots in MGM UA to his current role in preserving classic films at Warner Brothers. He'll also share his insights on the marketing and distribution of these timeless creations, and his role as the producer for over 100 restored soundtrack album CDs.

In our conversation, we venture into the realm of technology's transformative impact on home entertainment. We unpack the revolutionary influence of the laserdisc format, the innovative extras MGM included in the Wizard of Oz anniversary edition, and the game-changing introduction of the DVD format by Warren Lieberfab in 1996.

Brace yourselves as George and I tango with the complex dance of niche audiences, film preservation, and profitability in the cinematic world. We'll delve into his experiences in catalog marketing during the heyday of VHS and DVD, explore the rise of brand marketing, and dissect the success of film franchises like Forbidden Hollywood. On top of that, we'll also touch on the allure of precode and film noir films for younger audiences, the crucial role of technology in film preservation, and Warner Brother's unique relationship with UCLA. Trust me, you don't want to miss the stories behind the preservation of classic films such as The Wizard of Oz, Casablanca, and Singin' in the Rain, and the paramount importance of preserving the tales behind these films' creation.

    玩桌游 Play Board Games

    玩桌游 Play Board Games

Hello everyone, in today's episode I talk about board games. The most recent one I played is called Machi Koro 2--an easy, fun board game where you build establishments,  earn returns, and build 3 landmarks to win.

In this day and age, board games may sound boring compared to our smartphones, computers and other forms of multi-media entertainment. Yet board games have its unique merits. First, it's very engaging since you need to actively think about your moves as well as other players'. And more importantly, you can have a wonderful time with your friends and family without the distraction of things like your phones.

Thank you for listening to 5 Minute Chinese. If you like the show, kindly take a second to rate and share the show so that it can help more people. I appreciate your support. See you next time!

TT32 Networking 101: What We Learned & Put Into Practice with Dr. Atif Ghaffar

TT32 Networking 101: What We Learned & Put Into Practice with Dr. Atif Ghaffar

Your favourite guest, Dr. Atif Ghaffar of Zebra Home Cinema is back along with his alter-ego, Tony Montana/Scarface!

Episode 31 with Tyler Foley had such an impact on Atif that he immediately put into practice some of what Tyler taught me about the most impactful ways to network and meet new people. And so did I!

Having been to a few events between the two of us recently, we wanted to compare notes and see how far we’d come since last December’s networking nightmare…

    Among the things we discuss:

    • Not all events are created equal
    • The importance of intent and prioritising have a good time
    • Definitely what NOT to do when you meet people for the first time
    • How personal presentation and the way you dress can help make a room come to you

    Enjoy!

    The Cable Guy (1996)

    The Cable Guy (1996)

    “The future is now!”

Welcome back to another juiced up, stalkerific, life-disrupting episode of THE FILM SNARKS!!!

This week, we’re taking a little ride on the information superhighway and heading back to the mid-90’s once more, a time when home TVs were monstrously oversized tubes, a time when MTV still played real ACTUAL music videos on said tubes, and most relevant to the movie in question this week, waiting hours at a time for the cable company to show up at your home to install your cable!

It’s probably painfully obvious that we’re talking about the 1996 Jim Carrey-starring and Ben Stiller-directed dark comedy, The Cable Guy, which turned 25 this week on June 14th if you can believe that!

What would you do if you had a stage 5 clinger that just wouldn't leave you alone? How would you react if someone invaded every aspect of your life and turned everything upside down?

Join us this week as we find out if making us dislike Jim Carrey was a strategic mistake and does The Cable Guy suffer for it, or is it another wholly misunderstood 90s flick that deserves a second life 25 years on?

“This concludes our broadcast day. Click.”

Next gen consoles and their home entertainment possibilities

Next gen consoles and their home entertainment possibilities

Ben Green joins the podcast for a follow-up chat of the last episode. Building on our discussion about residential gaming set-ups and the integrator, Ben talks about the next generation of consoles in the PS5 and XBox Series X and what their power can bring to the table.

With these two new systems, consoles can finally bridge the gap between console and PC gaming systems. On top of its computing power, there are plenty of opportunities to use these systems as a media hub, with Sony releasing a PS5 media remote alongside their consoles.

    We hope you enjoy!
