    189. Mouthful of Fortune

At Lunar New Year, certain foods are particularly lucky to eat. Why? Because in Chinese, their names are puns on fortunate things. Damn, maybe noodles are all it takes to get me into puns after all... Professor Miranda Brown, cultural historian of China specialising in food and drink, explains the wordplay foods of new year, and why names are so resonant in Chinese.

    S15 E9 - Homonym? I Hardly Know Him!

    S15 E9 - Homonym? I Hardly Know Him!

It’s wordplay week, because Justin has written six trivia questions about homonyms, which are words with multiple meanings. We also get into discussions of musical instruments, fishing, and movie history!

3:36: Q1 (Music): What two instruments, one a woodwind, the other a member of the brass family, are both homonyms for types of glasses that you might drink champagne from?

13:50: Q2 (Sports & Games): This present participle sounds like someone is scheming, but it can also refer to the sport of fishing.

20:07: Q3 (Everything Else): Though it can also mean a type of song, like Bach’s “on the G String”, what classical element did Anaximenes argue was the origin of all others?

29:22: Q4 (Arts & Literature): Also known by her Chinese name Sai Zhenzhu, what author has a first name that can also mean a bubble of champagne or tapioca, and a last name that can also mean a dollar or a deer?

35:56: Q5 (Times & Places): A homonym of a U.S. state, what Eastern European country’s President is Salome Zurabishvili?

40:57: Q6 (Movies & TV): Homonymously, it refers to an unpowered vehicle pulled by a powered vehicle.  Name this particular form of advertisement, usually for a movie.

    Limited Appeal - Party nonoffice

    Limited Appeal - Party nonoffice
This episode, Warren describes a situation in his work bathrooms that has been troubling him: one day the overseers at Warren's office replaced the paper towels with air dryers. However, some people must have complained, because at some point someone added a box containing so-called "door tissues". This way, people who had previously used paper towels to open the door had an extra paper towel that they could use to open the door after air drying their hands. Then the problem became what to do with the door tissues, so the management installed a garbage can outside the toilets marked "Door tissues only!" Then someone ripped down the door tissue box, so there was still a garbage can but no door tissues. We discuss the complex series of pointless events for far longer than you might imagine. I was really annoyed by this story when Warren told it and writing it down again has infuriated me again. Believe it or not, the first half, infuriating as it is, is outmatched by the conversation on homophones that follows. Arrrghhh!!! If you justifiably want to complain about how painful this episode was, contact us by email (maskedman@limitedappeal.net).
