Rio Hondo College forensics coordinator Grant Tovmasian and speech instructor Patricia Hughes discuss the school’s Speech and Debate Team, which has a transfer rate of more than 90% for students moving on to a four-year university, with students entering such schools as UC Berkeley, UCLA, USC and Concordia.

Rio Hondo College biotech professor Robert Bethel discusses the school’s Fermentation Technology course, which explores the science behind brewing beer with the goal of training the next generation of microbrewers.

Rio Hondo College Homeland Security Program Coordinator Dr. Nash Flores discusses Rio Hondo’s new Homeland Security degree and certificate programs and leading the effort to have the Homeland Security discipline approved by the California Community College Board of Governors.

Rio Hondo College Art Gallery Director Robert Miller and Arts Division Dean Dr. Grant Linsell discuss the gallery’s exhibition Cuentista, part of the fifth SUR:biennial, an art show at multiple area venues that explores the geography, culture and art inspired by areas south of Los Angeles.

El Monte Union High School District students can take college courses for credit during the regular school day through a new dual enrollment partnership with Rio Hondo College. EMUHSD Director of Curriculum and Instruction Hillary Wolfe and Rio Hondo Dean of Student Success Dr. Melba Castro discuss the myriad ways students can earn college credit in high school, including the Early College Academy

Rio Hondo College Vice President of Student Services Henry Gee is now in his 40th year as a college administrator, and will receive the Fred Turner Award for Outstanding Service from the Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education (NASPA) in March. Gee discusses what the lifetime achievement award means to him, his work as interim Executive Director for the Rio Hondo Foundation, and bringing back Homecoming at Rio Hondo.

When the 2018-19 school year began, El Monte City School District parents were welcomed with an additional resource, the Kindergarten Parent Academy, to help their children navigate their school experience. The Academy presents a series of workshops concentrating on literacy, mathematics and socio-emotional health and is available throughout the District. Rio Hondo Elementary School teachers Indra Arellano and Belinda Pinedo discuss the purpose and the benefits of the Academy.

Rio Hondo College recently staged their tenth performance of “The Nutcracker,” an annual fundraiser that combines the efforts of Rio Hondo dance students and students from several local schools and dance programs, many of them led by Rio Hondo alumni. Rio Hondo Director of Dance Dr. Alyson Cartagena discusses what makes “The Nutcracker” a special event for the community, and the newly-instituted Rio Promise, which provides free tuition for two years to qualifying students.
