Joe Davis (Ngāti Hei Kaumātua) - Altbays Table Talk #212
Did you know that, in Māori culture, rangatira are tribal chiefs, the hereditary Māori leaders of a hapū? Joe, representing Ngāti Hei on the Hauraki Māori Trust Board and serving as a treaty negotiator for Ngāti Hei, embodies this important role. The Altbays Table Talk is thrilled to have Joe as our guest for a conversation about kaupapa Māori in our local communities, Aotearoa's rich history, and so much more! We are also honored to have our dear friend Brandon Amoamo co-hosting this historic show.
Joe represents Ngāti Hei on the Hauraki Māori Trust Board and is a treaty negotiator for Ngāti Hei and Ngāpuhi. He’s a member of the Te Whanganui-A-Hei Marine Reserve Committee and served for three terms on Waikato Regional Council’s Coromandel Catchment Committee. He was also an inaugural member of the Sea Change – Tai Timu Tai Pari Stakeholder Working Group, which led to the publication of the first Hauraki Gulf/Tikapa Moana Marine Spatial Plan.
Joe, a well-known Wharekaho resident and Ngāti Hei kaumātua, has recently been made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List. Joe received the award for his services to Māori and conservation.
Joe is trustee of the Mercury 250th Anniversary Trust and was responsible for organising the Tuia 250 pōwhiri at Wharekaho in 2019.
ALTBAYS Table Talk invites awesome people to have an honest, laid-back conversation. Our platform focuses on bringing communities together and thrive.
