In this episode, we’re digging into the music of Eighth Tower Records, a record label that focuses on “dark music and fiction.” We selected albums that were inspired by influential horror artists, Zdzisław Beksiński and Lucio Fulci. While they worked with very different mediums their art shares a similar abstract nightmare aesthetic and pessimistic worldview. Consequently, the albums inspired by their work are equally haunting and evocative.

Episode 178: 'Rubikon' (2022)/'Let the Corpses Tan' (2017)

Episode 178: 'Rubikon' (2022)/'Let the Corpses Tan' (2017)

This week we decided to go with a straightforward episode. We have a little bit of movie news and we talk about two movies. And we finally make a decision about our long running giveaway. In just two weeks, we will announce the winner of original horror art, a t-shirt from Public House 28 Brewery, and a number of horror movies.

We know we just spoke about Tom Cruise a few weeks back and yes, that conversation went on for longer than it needed to. But how could we ignore that Top Gun: Maverick just made over $1 billion? We also talk about the star quality of Cruise and how there is no modern comparison.

We love madcap whounits. We  drove a quote from Knives Out into the ground and dreamed of making a stage production of 1985's Clue. Recent years have seen a return of these types of movies and we talk about the trailer from the latest. See How They Run has a cast that includes Saoirse Ronan, Adrian Brody, and Sam Rockwell in a murder mystery set around a  West End play.

Rubikon starts off like many other science fiction movies. It is set in the future, pollution has covered the globe, and corporation run everything. It also looks great. Few indie sci-fi movies look near as good as it. What drives the film are its characters and the story. We talk about a pretty straightforward film that still manages to be confusing.

Early on, it seems like Let the Corpses Tan is content to concentrate on an amazing title and its stylish look. Part Weird West, part heist movie, part WTF, the film will not be for everyone. It is easily one of the most memorable things we have seen this year, and not always for the best reason. We the meaning of nude women covered in gold, a day long violent shootout, and how to make people care for characters that are only given a little bit of time.

    Episode 174: 'Come to Daddy' (2019)/'DASHCAM' (2022)

    Episode 174: 'Come to Daddy' (2019)/'DASHCAM' (2022)

A horror movie starring Winnie the Pooh seems more like a joke than anything else. We talk about the trailer that does little to take away from the feeling. We also talk about Top Gun and the importance middle aged Americans played in its success. And it is impossible not to talk about the amazing Johnny Depp-Amber Heard trial. We lay it all out here and reveal what sad people we truly are.

Come to Daddy is one of those movies that you need to tell people to give it a chance. Things do not start poorly. On the contrary, it can be argued that the opening moments are the best in the film. But for those who have heard about how wild it is, the first half will catch them off guard. Things change after a shocking revelation.

We talk about the frantic pacing, some memorable performances, and how the beautiful setting ended up being a missed opportunity. Come to Daddy is one of those films that is hard to adequately talk about without completely ruining it. If you have heard about it and are still on the fence, we will help you make a decision without spoiling any of the fun.

DASHCAM is already one of the most polarizing movies of the year. It's anti-vaxxer red hat wearing protagonist will immediately anger some people due to her views. Her juvenile toilet humor will alienate others. But could there be a charm to her? We talk about Annie Hardy and what Rob Savage will do next.

    Episode 172: Triple Feature Celebration!

    Episode 172: Triple Feature Celebration!

There have been some clear trends since we started our humble little podcast a few years ago. Horror movies based on true events have become increasingly popular. On one of our episodes we questioned whether there was anything different sci-fi horror could do. While we still are not sure, that has not stopped us from liking the sub-genre. Fun drinking game: listen back over the years and take a shot every time Danny mentions The Faculty. Erotic horror has been a favorite, so were had to include an example of this special episode.

Veronica is a 2017 movie from Spain about a 1991 incident in which a girl played with a Ouija board and mysteriously died three years later. When you have a blind nun named Sister Death, you can kind of guess what kind of movie you are in for. The movie does not disappoint as it proceeds to hit the audience with every horror trope imaginable. Is a kick ass soundtrack enough to save the day?

Whenever you watch a movie that is a few decades old, it becomes a question of how well has it held up? Cube was a sci-fi horror phenomenon in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Almost a quarter of a century later, flaws in the writing, over the top characters, and one deux ex machina too many stand out. There is not doubting the impact it has had on horror, but does it deserve to be recognized as one of the best ever?

Piercing is a strange little horror movie about a man who is ready to meticulously kill a prostitute. It is stylish, boasts a great soundtrack, and has a look that is as discomforting as it is eye-catching. It is definitely one of those movies that is not for everyone.

Episode 170: Mommy Issues Month: 'The Dark and the Wicked' (2020)/'Green Ghost and the Masters of the Stone' (2022)

Episode 170: Mommy Issues Month: 'The Dark and the Wicked' (2020)/'Green Ghost and the Masters of the Stone' (2022)

The Cannes Film Festival may be the epitome of overindulgence. The outfits rival anything seen at the Met Gala while the setting is one of the most fabulous in the world. Fortnite is a multiplayer video game played by kids. So, what brought the two together? We talk about one of the strangest crossovers in years.

Every time we review a movie, we try to go in with zero expectations. That does not stop us from forming initial impressions, however. Green Ghost and the Masters of the Stone is a movie about a car salesman written by and starring... a car salesman. Charlie is down on his luck, but has a strong support system. He also learns that he has superpowers that can save the world.

We were interested in the movie because of its ties to El Paso and did not hesitate to watch it. Based on the premise, we each went in with a very specific idea of what we were going to see. All of us were surprised, but is that a good thing. We also discuss the passion put in the movie and the what seems to be a creepy crush the hero has on his sister.

The Dark and the Wicked  is something of a return to form for us. The intimate horror film about a pair of siblings up against a sinister force is worlds away from the over the top fare we have recently featured. Bryan Bertino has an impressive pedigree and his knowledge of the genre is on full display. But are there too many tropes and is the twist too easy to spot?

Episode 166: Trucksploitation Month: 'Road Train' (2010)/'Godforsaken' (2020)

Episode 166: Trucksploitation Month: 'Road Train' (2010)/'Godforsaken' (2020)

When we talked about doing Trucksploitation Month, we never thought it would give us the awesomeness that last week's episode provided. The downside to such a hot start is that there seems to be no place to go but down. Road Train  - or Road Kill depending on what side of the ocean you are on - is a 2010 horror movie from Australia that also surprised us. It has more depth than this type of move usually does while delivering on the horror. So why don't more people talk about it? We have some ideas.

Found footage is one of horror's most popular sub-genres. It has become so entrenched in cinema that point of view scenes are common in  many blockbusters. Even bad found footage will keep audiences engrossed. And these types of films have lots of issues. From having unlikable characters to taking too long to get things started, found footage films embrace their problems instead of moving on from them.

Except in Godforsaken. (Actually, its three main characters are the dirt worst.) It wastes no time, gives audiences a unique story, and creates a genuine sense of dread. The story is a creepy one that examines religion, our fear of death, and how much we need to believe in something. At first, it seems like one of the best things we have seen this year.

What made our opinions change so drastically by the time the final credits had rolled? Did the writers use up all their ideas or did they just give up? Fans of horror will initially enjoy Godforsaken, but even those who love found footage will have trouble forgiving where the story ended up.

We also try to talk about Bill Skarsgard being cast in The Crow. But first we have to talk about the original movie, its soundtrack, the sequels, how it made black nail polish cool, Sting, and high school.

Episode 165: Truckspoloitation Month: 'Truck Stop Women' (1974)/'The Free Fall' (2022)

Episode 165: Truckspoloitation Month: 'Truck Stop Women' (1974)/'The Free Fall' (2022)

This is the first year we had no preview for the Oscars. It was not an intentional choice; we simply forgot about them. We had decided we were going to talk about how underwhelming the Academy Awards were this year. Will Smith and Chris Rock provided a moment to remember, but does that change the fact the fact that the show was not all that great?

We will never be lacking for Stephen King content  so the news that HBO Max is working on a new series based on King's work in not surprising. The fact that it is a prequel to It is very interesting, however. We talk about what direction the show may go in and why we are a little concerned.

The Free Fall is a movie about a woman who attempts to commit suicide unsuccessfully. When she wakes up, she remembers little and her husband tries to nurse her back to full strength. It is a straightforward premise, but we had a lot of trouble discussing it. We do our best to talk about the movie while dancing around its interesting ending.

Trucksploitation Month begins with a doozy. Truck Stop Women is a 1974 exploitation pick that does not mess around. Starring B Movie queen Claudia Jennings the movie leans into the trucker culture. We have never discussed anything like this on the show before. From its portrayal of the south to its amazing ending, it may be the seminal big truck movie. And yes, we unironically compare it to Paris is Burning.
