Interview with Catriona Ward (August Derleth, Shirley Jackson, World Fantasy Award Winner) Author of Looking Glass Sound

Jake and Ron are honored and thrilled to have author Catriona Ward on the podcast!
    Her latest novel is
Looking Glass Sound published by Tor Nightfire.

I recently caught Catriona Ward at the Brookline Booksmith in Massachusetts, where she sat on a panel with former Wrath of the iOtians guest Christopher Golden and the inimitable Gretchen Felker-Martin, author of
Manhunt. And it's obvious that Catriona's fan base is large and adoring, and rightly so. She has a generosity of spirit that's immediately palpable.

Look no further than her willingness to talk with us in the midst of an exhausting cross country book tour.  Catriona's work is influenced by her globetrotting youth. She was born in Washington, D. C., but grew up, well, all over, with stops in Kenya, Madagascar, Yemen, England, and Morocco. Catriona earned her undergraduate degree in English Literature at Oxford, and a Master's in Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia.

In 2015, she brought her experience, education, and energy to bear on
Rawblood. Published as The Girl from Rawblood in the U. S. in 2016,  the book signaled the arrival of a major new talent in horror fiction and won an August Derleth Award at the British Fantasy Awards to boot.  Catriona followed up in 2019 with Little Eve, which also won a Derleth and a Shirley Jackson Award.

In 2022, Catriona blew readers, critics, and no less an authority than Stephen King himself away with
The Last House on Needless Street, a mind bender of a novel that I hope every iOtian listener has already enjoyed.  The book won an amazing third Derleth Award for Catriona. And was also shortlisted for the World Fantasy Award, the British Book Award, and a Red Tentacle Kitschie, which, for those not in the know, is a juried prize awarded for elevating the tone of genre literature.

2023 brought us Sundial, which was nominated for the Bram Stoker and Locus Awards. Of its author, Danielle Trussoni of the New York Times remarked, “Ward is willing to go places so dark, so dismal, that it borders on sadism.” In our line of work, that's high praise.  Elevated horror indeed.

Catriona combines elements of the psychological thriller, the gothic, and a hallucinatory high strangeness to create a voice that is uniquely hers. No one else could have written Looking Glass Sound, her other 2023 release with Tor Nightfire. Which I might add continues to publish the best of the best of contemporary horror.

Catriona spoke with us about this book from a hotel room in the Twilight Zone, en route to her next speaking gig. We were thrilled!

Richard and Cassandra joined us to discuss their first collaboration, the urban fantasy horror novel
The Dead Take the A Train, part of the Carrion City duology published by Tor Nightfire. For fans of Hellblazer, Angel, The Magicians, and yes, Sandman Slim, this is a must-read.

Interview with Scott Leeds Author of Schrader's Chord

Ron chats with author Scott Leeds about his remarkable debut novel, Schrader's Chord! It's a visceral story about cursed vinyl records that open a gateway to the land of the dead.

After his estranged father’s mysterious death, Charlie Remick returns to Seattle to help with the funeral. There, he discovers his father left him two parting gifts: the keys to the family record store and a strange black case containing four ancient records that, according to legend, can open a gate to the land of the dead.

When Charlie, his sister, and their two friends play the records, they unwittingly open a floodgate of unspeakable horror. As the darkness descends, they are stalked by a relentless, malevolent force and see the dead everywhere they turn.

With time running out, the only person who can help them is Charlie’s resurrected father, who knows firsthand the awesome power the records have unleashed. But can they close the gate and silence Schrader’s Chord before it’s too late?

Interview with Pura Belpré Award Winner and Bram Stoker Nominee Vincent Tirado, Author of We Don't Swim Here

Jake and Ron welcome  Pura Belpré Award Winner and Bram Stoker Nominee Vincent Tirado, author of the fantastic horror novel We Don't Swim Here!

Bronwyn is only supposed to be in rural Hillwoods for a year. Her grandmother is in hospice, and her father needs to get her affairs in order. And they're all meant to make some final memories together.

Except Bronwyn is miserable. Her grandmother is dying, everyone is standoffish, and she can't even go swimming. All she hears are warnings about going in the water, despite a gorgeous lake. And a pool at the abandoned rec center. And another in the high school basement.

Anais tries her hardest to protect Bronwyn from the shadows of Hillwoods. She follows her own rituals to avoid any unnecessary attention—and if she can just get Bronwyn to stop asking questions, she can protect her too. The less Bronwyn pays attention to Hillwoods, the less Hillwoods will pay attention to Bronwyn. She doesn't get that the lore is, well, truth. History. Pain. The living aren't the only ones who seek retribution when they're wronged. But when Bronwyn does more exploring than she should, they are both in for danger they couldn't expect.

The Hellbound Heart by Clive Barker - Book Review

The Hellbound Heart by Clive Barker - Book Review

In this spooky halloween episode we review “The Hellbound Heart”, a 1980’s horror novella by Clive Barker. Barker is a banned author/painter/playwright, who’s been described by Stephen King as “the future of horror”. The Hellbound Heart makes it plain to see why — rendering demons, killers, and the prospect of unending torture in a terrifyingly vivid light. When Frank, a suave hedonist - opens the cursed Lemarchand configuration, he’s transported to a world where one experiences pain to a point that they can no longer differentiate it from pleasure. But after Frank manages to escape back to earth, its up to a young girl named Kirsty to confront him and the demons he’s pursued by. Join us as we explore the further regions of experience in this novella, and discuss what elevates it above typical genre horror. Happy Halloween!

    #9 Horror & Psyche – Outlast (2013) / Carrie (1974)

    #9 Horror & Psyche – Outlast (2013) / Carrie (1974)

    71 – A.J. West and Paranormal Foreplay

    71 – A.J. West and Paranormal Foreplay

This week I bring you a ghost story, as befitting the season. Though it’s a little more lurid than Charles Dickens would have liked.

The guest is A.J. West;   the book is The Spirit Engineer. It’s one of my very favourites of 2021.

Set in Belfast between the sinking of the Titanic and the outbreak of war, it’s a tale of science and the supernatural. Of William Crawford, a man who wants proof of the beyond, and will risk everything to grasp it. It’s actually based on real people and events, which I didn’t know, and still find incredible.

A.J and I talk about spiritualism and deceit, about the links between sex and seances, and about the rare appearance of a truly unlikeable male protagonist. We disagree a little, AJ thinks William’s he’s an antihero, I think he’s an asshole, but that doesn’t change the fact that he is the standout character of the year for me.

I hope you get chance to pour a drink, pull up a chair, and read this book over Christmas.

    Enjoy

18 - Gabriel Bergmoser and It's Only a Joke Mate!

Merry Christmas and/or time-off-work-week! For all of you currently freezing your asses off in cold climes, this week’s episode may make you feel a little too warm under the collar. Our guest is Gabriel Bergmoser, an author who exploded onto the horror scene in early 2020 with The Hunted, a pulpy, violent, visceral hell ride through the Australian wilderness in the company of very human prey and predators.

Considering the amount of people hanging from hooks and suffering violent deaths in his fiction, Gabriel proves to be a thoroughly charming guest. We talk at length about the problem of masculinity down under (and, as it turns out, everywhere else!). Gabe’s thesis includes anecdotes from Australian history and the time that he was personally chased down the street by a kid with a nail-studded cricket bat.

The Hunted is an EXCEPTIONAL horror novel. It flaunts its genre credentials, allowing us to get back to the blood and guts basics of the genre. At the same time, though, it’s got a lot to say about a lot of things. You’ll read it in one night and still think about it months later.

The Hunted was published in May by Faber and Faber

Oh, and a listener asked me to finally flesh out the list of my top-ten horror novels of all time. You don’t have to ask me twice, so at the end of this episode you’ll get some extra bonus content (whether you want it or not) whilst I indulge myself in banging on about books I love. I get quite pretentious in parts.

Ep 4: Monsters - Into The Dark: Good Boy & Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus

Ep 4: Monsters - Into The Dark: Good Boy & Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus

Hello people!  We’re in the home stretch of spooky season 2020 and what a way to wrap up our Halloween themed shows than with Monsters!  In this episode, Heather covers the literary classic Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus, followed by Jeff who takes on Hulu original movie Good Boy, staring Judy Greer.  Heather and Jeff break down the story of each piece by piece, and then share their analysis.  They follow up their presentations with a conversation on “what makes a monster?”.

Written in the early 1800’s by Mary Shelley, Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus is a gothic horror story which inspired centuries of macabre work.  A truly chilling novel, Frankenstein is much different than the green skinned, flat-top character you’re used to seeing every Halloween season.  Heather breaks down how Mary Shelley’s person hardships and grief fuel this story into something both personal and unique.

Did You Know?: The concept of Frankenstein was conceived in 1817 when Mary and her husband spent the summer with Lord Byron.

Good Boy is an entry of the Into The Dark series under the Blumhouse banner and exclusive to Hulu.  Staring Judy Greer, good boy is about a supernatural emotional support dog named Reuben who kills those who give his owner Maggie (Played by Greer) too much anxiety.  This dark comedy is carried by Greer, whose performance is both funny and a departure from what she is normally seen in.  Jeff carries us through the plot of the movie & points out the dark comedy that makes this movie an entertaining afternoon watch.

Fun Fact: Chico The Dog, who plays Reuben, is a Dachshund-Terrier mix.

Tune in to hear Jeff and Heather’s candid thoughts on the masterpiece scenes of each monster movie, how Frankensteinand Good Boy compare, and how Jeff and Heather relate to aspects of each. Share this episode with anyone who you think would enjoy it and let us know your thoughts on these monster movies!

Heather’s Rating of Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus: Super Nice – This book is a must read and a true literary classic
