Ep. 074: How to Prevent Gastric Issues by Supporting the Horse's Gut Microbiome

Ep. 074: How to Prevent Gastric Issues by Supporting the Horse's Gut Microbiome

On this episode, co-host Katy Starr and guest expert Dr. Stephen Duren, PhD, MS, PAS discuss healing a horse’s damaged digestive system including:

    • Different ways horses can have a compromised or damaged digestive system and how to heal it
    • Preventative solutions to minimize gastric ulcers in horses
    • How an unstable microbiome can impact multiple functions of the horse’s body

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure – meaning it is easier (and most often cheaper!) to do what you can to keep something from happening in the first place rather than try to fix or repair the issue after it has happened.

What if you could give your horse exactly what its digestive system requires while simultaneously preventing other potential issues from occurring while you’re at it? You won’t want to miss out on this conversation!

Ep. 073: Navigating the Diet Struggle: Feeding Your Carb Sensitive Horse

Ep. 073: Navigating the Diet Struggle: Feeding Your Carb Sensitive Horse

Welcome back to the new year!

On this episode, co-host Katy Starr and guest expert Dr. Stephen Duren, PhD, MS, PAS discuss carbohydrate sensitivity in performance horses including:

    • The differences between dietary starch, water soluble carbohydrates (WSC), ethanol soluble carbohydrates (ESC), and non-structural carbohydrates (NSC) – and what carbohydrate sensitive horses should and should NOT consume
    • Understanding the role that alfalfa, teff grass, beet pulp, rice bran, flaxseed meal and more play in a horse’s diet
    • Helping horse owners provide their horses with the right nutrient requirements in a safe manner, while minimizing the preparation workload

We cover A LOT in this episode - from breaking down the main function of the horse’s digestive system, to what is happening in the body of a horse who is sensitive to carbohydrates to discussing a fiber-based, grain-free, molasses-free solution for these types of horses who need extra calories due to a higher activity level or for those who struggle to keep weight on.

Ep. 071: Does My Horse Need a Blanket in the Winter? What the Research Says

Ep. 071: Does My Horse Need a Blanket in the Winter? What the Research Says

On this episode, co-hosts Dr. Tania Cubitt and Katy Starr and guest Dr. Michelle DeBoer discuss the hotly debated topic of whether or not horses actually need blankets in the winter, based on scientific research, including:

    • Changes in hair coat length and diameter in blanketed and non-blanketed horses
    • How body weight, body condition score and dry matter intake are impacted in blanketed horses
    • The next scientific research project in the works to evaluate whether horses should be blanketed or not

Can horses actually TELL us if they want a blanket or not? Dr. DeBoer also shares the results from a fascinating research study answering this question.

This is only part one of our interview! In Episode 72, the second part of this conversation, releasing Tuesday, December 5, Dr. DeBoer discusses the physiological processes that keep horses warm and if deciding to blanket, the right way to do it to keep horses at a healthy body condition and safe through the winter.

Ep. 061: The Key to Getting the Most Out of Your Horse Pasture

Dr. Tania Cubitt and Katy Starr interview Penn State Equine Extension Educator, Laura Kenny about how to know if your pasture is adequate, if improvements need to be made, or if it’s a total loss that needs to start over through pasture evaluation techniques.

Laura also shares some tips on how to get the most out of a pasture to benefit the horse and the environment. Laura and Dr. Cubitt talk about why horse owners should determine their goals with their horses before reseeding or improving pastures, and finding a good balance between what is good for the pasture and soil but what is also needed for specific horses, particularly ones struggling with metabolic disorders.

They also discuss foxtail, including what it is, how to identify it and differentiate it from timothy grass, and how to get rid of it.

Ep. 058: The Interesting and Curious Life of an Equine Veterinarian You Wouldn’t Believe with Dr. Jerry Billquist

On this episode, co-host Katy Starr and guest co-host, Dr. Stephen Duren, PhD, MS, PAS, visit with guest veterinarian, Dr. Jerry Billquist. From being an equine veterinarian in the military, doctoring a surprising predator species in Turkey, being the personal equine vet for Cloyce Box who played professional football with the Detroit Lions in the 50s, working with the Montana Racing Circuit, becoming the 2017 PRCA Veterinarian of the Year and heading back down to the hill country in Texas to continue to do what he loves - his life experiences and travels as a veterinarian will entertain and teach you.

Dr. Billquist has been to a lot of places, seen a lot of cases, and he is always willing to help up and coming vet students and veterinarians getting their start in the industry. Dr. Duren and Dr. Billquist also discuss the number one thing equine practitioners treat and how horses owners can create a positive relationship with their veterinarian. We’re humbled to celebrate World Veterinary Day with him.
