Eli Roth (Director, Screenwriter, Producer, Actor) on his Unique Directorial Vision and Testing the Limits in Horror

Kevin Goetz sits down with acclaimed filmmaker Eli Roth.

Eli burst onto the scene in 2002 with his indie horror hit Cabin Fever and cemented his reputation with the extremely profitable Hostel films. Known for his intense horror style and flair for marketing, Eli has built a hugely successful directing career. His latest film, the holiday slasher Thanksgiving, was released last year by Sony Pictures and he is currently working on a science fiction action comedy film, Borderlands, scheduled to be released this summer. Kevin and Eli have worked closely together using test screenings to hone Eli's movies. Their rapport is on full display as they delve deep into Eli's creative process, his career ups and downs, and the vital role testing feedback plays in the final films you see in theaters.

Kevin and Eli Discuss Eli's Upbringing and Early Interest in Filmmaking (3:20)
Eli became interested in film at a young age after seeing movies like Pinocchio, Star Wars, and Alien. He started making short films as a kid with help from a mentor. By age 11 he was making animated shorts, stop-motion films, and horror movies with his brothers and friends.

Cabin Fever and Eli's Initial Resistance to Testing (27:09)
Cabin Fever initially tested terribly but went on to be very profitable. Eli learned to analyze test data for what works rather than just looking at scores.

Eli's Experience Working His Way Up in the Film Industry (31:42)
Eli talks about his odd jobs in the film industry while writing scripts, including as an extra, a set production assistant, and Howard Stern's assistant on Private Parts.

Working with Quentin Tarantino and Making the Hostel Films (37:12)
Quentin Tarantino mentored Eli on Hostel, helping him add more realism and unexpected details. Eli discusses testing multiple endings for Hostel.

Thanksgiving Test Screenings and Editing (42:15)
Eli details his experience testing Thanksgiving and learning from audience feedback to hone the right tone, pacing, and violence level. He trimmed 15 minutes after the first test screening based on feedback. Eli says he has come to value test screening input thanks to insights from Kevin.

Eli on the Power of Test Screenings (54:19)
Eli thanks Kevin for helping filmmakers understand how to read test screening data and what audiences want. He advises filmmakers to listen to test feedback even if they don't agree.

This fascinating conversation gives rare insight into Eli Roth's unique directorial vision and his journey to becoming one of Hollywood's most successful horror filmmakers. Eli's passion for the genre and gift for understanding audiences have been instrumental in crafting crowd-pleasing terror. His embrace of the test screening process, utilizing Kevin's expert analysis, demonstrates Eli's dedication to giving viewers the best experience possible.

Existenzängste und Erschöpfung statt easy Snowboard-Vibes & High Life.

Eli Roth: How Much Is Too Much?

On this episode of The Gala Show, Gala sets the Thanksgiving table with director Eli Roth (Hostel, Knock Knock, Cabin Fever) to chat all about his newest movie Thanksgiving -- available in theaters now.  Eli shares with Gala how his philosophy on filmmaking has changed over the years, how he and writer Jeff Rendell came up with the idea for Thanksgiving when they were twelve, and the ways that social media played a role in the making of the movie -- but first, a question about what's on the menu for the holiday.

Please note, some spoilers to Thanksgiving may lay within!  Proceed with caution.

S4E7: New Zealand - 'Cow milking, black water caving and rugby hooligans'

In this episode, Emily and Rachel reread and relive their time in the NZ village of Waitomo, famous for its glow-worm bedazzled underwater caves. Amongst the usual mindless content, we hear of the formative time Rachel spent at a rural farm show, the awkward and cumbersome process of making new bus friends, EXTREME black water caving, Rachel's multi-coloured toes and Emily unwittingly allowing a raucous rugby team to break into the hostel.

Oliver Winter CEO A&O Hostels - Breaking Down Borders to Create a Green Empire

Oliver Winter CEO A&O Hostels - Breaking Down Borders to Create a Green Empire

Oliver Winter is the CEO and co-founder of a&o hostels, having founded the company 20 years ago with Michael Kluge. Since then it has gone on to become one of the most successful hostel chains in the world, with annual turnover in the nine-figure range.

Oliver joins Jeannette to talk about how he founded a global brand, and the differing skill sets he has acquired along the way, including becoming a prolific property investor.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Hostels provide a sense of community, where people can come together in ways not possible in the hotel world.
    • Almost half of the business relies on groups for bookings, and hostels prove extraordinarily popular with the likes of students, who seek low-cost accommodation that allows them to remain together as a group.
    • Maintaining hostels requires not just a sense of business, but investment. Oliver has, along the way, become a property investor, and is now responsible for many units.
    • If you have a good business idea, then be brave enough to put it out there into the world, and be disruptive enough to see it through. Stick to your idea and stick to your way of doing things.

    BEST MOMENTS

'You have to understand your target group'

'I always was focussed on operations, but to control a property has some charm'

'Our early lives influence our lives as adults'

    'Be brave, be disruptive'

'The priority was to bring. commercial culture to the people who raise the money'

This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. It’s never too late to be BRAVE and BOLD and unlock your inner BRILLIANCE. ABOUT THE GUEST

Oliver Winter is the CEO and co-founder of a&o hostels, having founded the company 20 years ago with Michael Kluge.

Winter intended to begin his career in teaching, but while on a study break travelling the world in the mid-1990s, he was inspired to come up with a new hostel concept. Oliver wanted to give people, especially students or young people, the opportunity to stay in professionally managed, affordable and centrally located accommodation, with no youth hostel card fee.

After several initial attempts at getting the company off the ground, Winter was approached by his experienced, entrepreneurial landlord, who deemed the idea a ‘winning’ concept. The two of them collaborated, and together in 2000 they opened their first a&o hostel, a 164-room property in Berlin.

Since launching the brand, Winter has successfully expanded the company having been responsible for its strategic growth, with a&o operating 39 hostels in 25 cities and nine European countries. A 40th property is planned for spring 2024 with a&o Florence.

In 2022 a&o recorded its most successful year to date. Welcoming more than 5.55 million overnight stays and a turnover of more than 172 million Euros, the hostel chain surpassed results from the pre-COVID year 2019 (around 150 million) and experienced a turnover increase of more than 100 million Euros compared to 2021 – almost 150 percent more.

    The Sunway's Revenge

SCARED TO DEATH IS EXPLICIT IN EVERY WAY. PLEASE TAKE CARE WHILE LISTENING.

Dan's first story is mostly set in a hotel located somewhere we aren't sure. Whoever posted this tale never gave an exact location and there are several hotels around the country that have had the name “Sunway Hotel.” It’s a nice twist on the creepy haunted hotel story.  The next story is about a mythical creature from Mayan mythology - the Alux, a creepy little creature some people still believe in - like the current President of Mexico. Lynze has three stories, each on the shorter side, which makes them pack a fast paced punch. Her first tale explores ghosts in the graveyard, then she guides us to a hostel for a spoopy tale and then she rounds out the episode with a strange story that is hard to explain without giving it away!
