    Hostful: Top 10 of 2021

    Hostful: Top 10 of 2021

Well, it's that time of the year again. The final pod is here, and as is tradition, Brooke and Ben round out the year with their own Top 10 list.

First though, Ben decides to turn the tables on Brooke and interview her for once. He digs in to some of the recurring themes of Season 8 - sobriety, health and creativity - and it's as human and messy as you might expect.

They then get into their personal Top 10, listing their individual favourite:

    • TV show
    • small detail
    • movie
    • new destination
    • book
    • discovery
    • album
    • new podcast
    • meal
    • experience

In a year like no other, there are some unexpected answers to be found in this episode. Enjoy!

So this is 40 with Ben McAlary

So this is 40 with Ben McAlary

We are back at it with another season of the Slow Home Podcast.

Kicking-off this season is another frank and fearless conversation between Ben and Brooke.

As the dust settles on Ben's 40th birthday celebrations. Brooke and Ben talk about updates in Ben's life since 2018, including career change, identity, and how he aligns these days to his life motto of Health, Happiness, and Heart.

It's a raw, sometimes uncomfortable, always entertaining episode to begin the new season. We hope you enjoy it.

    The Hostful with the Mostful

Brooke and Ben sit down in their very 'echoey' living room next to their very loud dogs to talk through what has been happening over the last month or so. They also answer a number of questions posed by listeners in the first Hostful in quite some time.

This episode includes a slight disclaimer that some of the content may be a bit dated as it was recorded well over a month ago.

Managing screentime, finding balance and future plans - A Coronavirus Hostful

Managing screentime, finding balance and future plans - A Coronavirus Hostful

And just like that, the end of Season 5 is upon us.

In today's hostful episode, Brooke and Ben spend some time answering the most common pandemic-related questions as asked by you, as well as tackling some lighter topics to try and provide some much-needed balance to not only this episode but also their own mindset.

It's undoubtedly been an incredibly difficult few weeks for everyone, with many more challenges and dark days ahead. Today Brooke and Ben offer some insights in to how they're trying to use the tools in their slow living toolbox to navigate some of these hard days, as well as offering some suggestions for how you might want to adapt some of them in to your own life.

They also answer the following questions:

    • How are you managing remote schooling while also trying to work from home?
    • Do you think slow living is helping during lockdown? And if so do you think it will have a positive effect in the future?
    • What did you learn about schooling and spending a lot of time together while travelling? And has any of that been helpful during lockdown?
    • How to create rhythms for working or studying at home, for those who've never done it before?
    • What good new recipes have you tried lately?
    • What's bringing you joy right now?
    • What are you listening to/watching/reading right now?

Brooke and Ben end with a brief update of what you can expect from Season 6 (which will be in your ears shortly - they've decided not to take a break between seasons in light of the current situation and all of the excellent guest interviews they have coming up which may offer some help) as well as what to expect from the next round of the Slow Beginnings Online Retreat, which starts on April 26.

    The Check In: Part 2

    The Check In: Part 2

It’s been a few months since Brooke and Ben shared their 2018 plans with you and thought it was time for an update, because, well, things have changed. Head back to Episode 193 if you’re curious to hear all the previous details, but in a nutshell next year the plan is for Brooke and Ben to pack up their lives in the Blue Mountains and head off on an adventure. First stop will be Canada for a few months before heading to the United States for a book tour to celebrate the release of SLOW. After that, they really don’t know. (And that part, at least, hasn’t changed).

Up until recently the plan was to rent out their house, work remotely and home school the kids while attempting to travel in a slow way, living like locals wherever possible. It was going to allow them to travel, experience the world and still have somewhere to come back to at the end of the trip.

Now? Some of those plans have changed and some of them have become clearer, and in today’s episode Brooke and Ben give you a big old run-down of what they're doing instead.

They talk about why they've decided to sell their house, why they're giving away all their stuff, and why 2018 is all about experimentation.

This is a loose conversation, mostly because Brooke and Ben are feeling pretty nervous/daunted/excited about it all. So enjoy!

    The Check Up

    The Check Up

It’s been a couple of months since Brooke and Ben announced their plans to head off in to the wild and spend 2018 travelling, and quite a lot has happened since then. So they decided (somewhat foolishly, perhaps) to sit down, hit record, and just… talk. No notes. No plans. No idea.

In a looser, more conversational episode, Brooke and Ben share a clear insight into life at the moment, including the preparations for their upcoming trip (or rather, their lack of preparations) as well as the first couple of weeks of book launch life.

Brooke talks about the vulnerability hangover of the book’s release and the beautiful (and not quite as enthusiastic) feedback she’s been receiving over the past couple of weeks.

They also talk about the importance of creating and honouring their personal boundaries at the moment, and Brooke’s ongoing project of learning to say no more often.

Ben thinks this is the loosest poggie they’ve recorded in a while, and isn’t sure whether that’s a good or bad thing… Head over to http://www.slowyourhome.com/193 for the full blog post and to let Brooke and Ben know if you like these off the cuff check ins, or…not.

    Enjoy!

Finances, shopping and rediscovering your Why

Finances, shopping and rediscovering your Why

It’s Hostful time! And, like every single month, in today’s episode Ben and Brooke answer some super insightful listener questions:

    • What impact did slow living have on your finances?
    • How do you judge if something is necessary and "valuable" enough to warrant purchase?
    • As your items start to get a bit tatty, when do you replace them? Or do you keep repairing or mending instead?
    • How does one re-learn oneself?
    • Other than decluttering, what aspect of slow living do you feel has made the most difference in your family's life?

Some of these topics Ben and Brooke feel relatively confident on, but there are a whole heap of links over at http://www.slowyourhome.com/139 that will point you in the direction of the experts.
