Dog Fosters! Goal Setting for Success

Dog Fosters! Goal Setting for Success

Fostering adolescent and adult dogs can be challenging. In this episode, I break down the goals and introduce the 7 step fostering program I have applied with hundreds of dogs and taught to dozens of fosters.

Programs for pet parents are different than those of fostering - Why? Because the goal is different!  Fostering is not about BEING the best home or addressing behavioral issues that are specific to the foster home, but rather, taking the steps to ensure a successful adoption into the best home for the dog.

I use the example of a recent foster couple I helped with their challenging dog. Their goal to address behavioral issues specific to their home life complicated the process of providing the dog with the necessary skills to be happily homed.

The UPWARD Dogology 7 step program keeps the goals in the forefront and the success rate high. In this episode, I review these steps, discussing why they are important, and how they eliminate the need for lengthy fostering periods and allow for an easy integration into their new home.

    Win-Win!

Client Learning Journey- Why standard house training methods often fail with adult dogs-SnipPet Piece-The Fear Free Movement (Certification)

UPWARD Dogology episodes contain a “Journey” and a “SnipPet”  The Journey describes the process, challenges and successes with a client and their dog. The SnipPet Pieces are tidbits of info, tips, “what’s trending”, opinions and advice from experts on anything and everything dog related.

In this Learning Journey, Billie introduces us to Jane with her dog Buttons. Jane adopted Buttons as a mature dog from a breeder and she is having problems house-training Buttons. Jane learns how cognitive behavioral therapy changes Button's perception and, in turn, addresses the messing.

The SnipPet Piece takes a look at The Fear Free Certification recommended for veterinarian clinics. This movement has effectively decreased negative methods by spreading awareness on the importance of positive methods, but has this left room for other effective, non-aversive methods?

    FAQ: Basics of Puppy Training

    FAQ: Basics of Puppy Training
I personally like the plastic mold, but some of this decision depends on budget and the size of the dog. If your budget is tight and you can only afford one crate, I would get one of the big wire ones and partition it off. If the budget permits, however, I do prefer the plastic mold. I think dogs feel more comfortable in something that is enclosed and sturdy, more like a den. Plus, plenty of dogs can break the wire mesh crates. When I raise a puppy, they’re in a small plastic crate for a while and then as they get older they move to a larger plastic crate.
