Episode 61: Welcome Back to Season 4!
Welcome back! Season 4 is finally here, and I'm just starting off with a quick chat about what you're going to find in these episodes and also what I've been doing with my language learning for the last four or so months. I've been doing a ton of intensive language time with both Italian and German, I've been dabbling in a couple languages, and I've been trying to find a good balance between pushing forward and resting. Today's episode is light and, well, about me, but don't worry. Season 4 will be packed with a lot of versatile content that hopefully helps you feel confident in your own language learning life. Episode 59: A Joyful Chat with a Special Guest Co-Host

Episode 59: A Joyful Chat with a Special Guest Co-Host
I invited a very special language learning and language loving friend to co-host this episode with me and chat all about the joys of language learning. This is a very familiar voice in the language learning community, and it's such a pleasure to have Lindsay Williams of Lindsay Does Languages on the show! We had an absolute blast talking about loving languages and finding joy in learning them. We talk about current language learning wins, some favorite languages and connections to them (spoiler: you may want to learn Guarani after listening to Lindsay talk about it), and what keeps us joyfully teathered at each level of learning. Learning a language is a long road, and there are so many challenges along the way, but something that keeps us in the language learning world is all the joy we find in the process and the community. I hope you enjoy listening in to my chat with Lindsay, and I hope it reminds you of all the exciting things you find in your own language life. I was recently a guest on Lindsay's podcast "How to Learn a Language," where we chat about perfectionism & immersion. Episode 58: Sometimes We Need to Get Better First

Episode 58: Sometimes We Need to Get Better First
Are you the kind of language learner who meets something above your skill level and starts to tell yourself that you're just bad at this thing? It's too big. You're not the kind of person who can. You kinda already knew this language was too hard to begin with. I've found myself doing this loads of times while learning Italian and German, but a recent encounter with my daughter reminded me that sometimes we just need to get better first. We just need to get back to the language resources that are at our level and keep practicing. Instead of totally writing off those challenging things and telling ourselves that we're just bad at it, we're better served to remind ourselves that languages are hard, we are learning languages, and maybe we just aren't ready for what we've encountered...yet. We just have to get better first. If you're someone who loves learning languages and are looking for some extra insight into how to learn a language, then you've come to the right place. I love sharing my language journey as an adult language learner, and this includes the personal self-growth and mindset shift things many language learners don't often consider. Language learning is a beautiful and fulfilling journey, and it brings me great joy to share this love with passionate language learners like me. Episode 38: Non-Level Victories in Language Learning

Episode 38: Non-Level Victories in Language Learning
In today's episode, I talk about language victories we have along our journeys that have nothing to do with reaching the next level. Moving up a language level is often our overarching objective, but sometimes reaching a new level is so far away that it's difficult to recognize our progress. And progress, by the way, doesn't only show up in results. Sometimes it's easy to see these victories when they have to do with our language ability, but victories can also show up in the activity we do (or don't do) and also in the mentality we have about our language journeys. I can see my improvements in ability, for example, when I speak almost exclusively in my target language during a 30-minutes conversation lesson, but in this same example there are also victories related to activity and mentality. The act of scheduling the lesson is a non-level victory for me that proves I've made progress over the years because I used to feel so nervous about conversation lessons that I would put off scheduling them regularly. Not beating myself up when an English word does sneak into that conversation is a mental victory, as well, because it indicates a huge shift between negative self-talk and self-disbelief to belief and focusing on the positive things. It's so important to recognize all the victories along our langauge journeys, not just the biggest or most obvious ones. They're proof that we're improving. They’re proof that the non-linear line of progression is trending upward. We have victories in our languages every single day in the activities we face, our language abilities, and how we mentally confront ourselves and our languages. Take some time this week to think about all the great victories you have in your language life, and I hope you share some of those with me, especially for the season finale episode in two weeks. 30. Why 95% of you will fail to learn English (or ANY language)... and how to avoid that

I talk about 10 reasons (plus a bonus one!) why many language learners fail to learn another language and achieve a high level of proficiency. I talk about how to solve these issues so you can ensure you're not "doomed" to giving up and failing to achieve your language goals.

Episode 16: Forging a Joyful Bond With Your Languages

Episode 16: Forging a Joyful Bond With Your Languages
In this episode, I talk about the importance of forging a joyful bond with your languages as early as possible. My first year learning Italian, especially, was rife with pressure, self-doubt, and beliefs that language learning is hard, that it's a struggle. By the time I started learning German, though, I had worked through much of this negativity, and my first year was full of positive energy, fun, and believing in myself. Today, even though my Italian is stronger than my German, I still get nervous and hesitate when speaking Italian. I still feel a pull to use Google translate, subconsciously believing that I can't do it on my own. With German, though, a language in which I'm still a beginner, these feelings don't exist. I feel no hesitation to just jump into a conversation, and I completely forget translation apps are available. Instead, I just charge forward with what I know. This stark difference in how I interact with my languages is connected to my early beliefs about myself learning each one. The limiting beliefs that overshadowed my early years with Italian still exist. I've proven to myself over and over again that I can learn and speak this language, that I am learning and speaking it, but those negative beliefs formed a bond that I must actively and intentionally work against. With German, though, I knew I could do it from the beginning. It's challenging, of course, but I've believed in myself and my abilities from day one, and the result is that I'm more likely to enter a conversation with ease and not worry about mistakes or judgment. I find this disparity in my underlying feelings of my ability in each language interesting, and the more I think about it, the more I believe in the importance of forging a joyful bond from the beginning. What we say to ourselves and what we believe matter. To me, I think they matter just as much as what resources or methods we choose for learning a language. We have to believe we can do it, and it's important to make sure you're speaking truth and kindness to yourself both about your language and yourself. No matter where you are in your language journey or what your reasons are for learning a language, I think the take-away from this episode is something that can benefit us all. Episode 7: Dealing with Overwhelm in Language Learning

Episode 7: Dealing with Overwhelm in Language Learning
In this episode, I talk about times when language learning becomes overwhelming. Whether there doesn't seem to be enough time for focused language study, there are too many (or not enough) resources to choose from, or our expectations aren't reasonable for our unique lives, language learning can feel overwhelming. It doesn't matter if you're a beginner in your first language or advanced in your fifth. Language learning can be overwhelming. When overwhelm doesn't pass on its own, how can we deal with it? What can we do to reduce the pressure of overwhelm and get back to focusing on growth and progress? In this episode, I discuss my top three tips for getting past overwhelm (whether stemming from time, resources, or expectations), and taking steps forward instead. I talk about these tips with respect to language learning, but they can easily be applied to other aspects of our lives to reduce overwhelm on the whole. Listen in to start thinking about how you could use these tips in your language life or to start brainstorming your own unique methods for dealing with overwhelm. Episode 5: Facing Language Tasks We Tend To Avoid

Episode 5: Facing Language Tasks We Tend To Avoid
In this episode, I talk about avoidance in language learning, something I really struggle with. From avoiding speaking to ignoring the book we want to read but can't seem to get started, avoidance can be a serious conflict in our lives as language learners. To make things even harder, there are numerous reasons why we avoid particular activities, and those reasons vary from person to person, activity to activity. I avoid speaking because I don't want to be judged for my mistakes. I avoid reading because I don't like the vulnerability of feeling inept or not good enough. I avoid other things for reasons I can't quite pinpoint. No matter the case, there are several language learning or language related things I really want to do, but this avoidance is holding me back. In this episode, I start digging into these activities and my superficial excuses for not facing them. I also introduce the Face the Avoidance challenge I've created so you can join me in facing the language activities we've been avoiding. This is a completely free challenge taking place in the online language community (via #FaceTheAvoidance on Instagram and Twitter) 9 & 10 April 2022. Listen in for more details on my vision for this challenge, how I will be encouraging and cheering you on every step of the way, and what we can do through this challenge to start facing the avoidance and continuing to create a sustainable, guilt-free language learning plan for ourselves. Episode 4: Considering Other Aspects of Life for Language Learning

Episode 4: Considering Other Aspects of Life for Language Learning
In this episode, I talk about all-or-nothing thinking and how this perfectionist tendency has shown up in so many areas of my life, including language learning. From cleaning house (or not) to working out (or not), an all-or-nothing mentality is at the core of when and how I do these things and whether or not I do them at all. I discuss why this way of thinking prevents me from getting things done and can lead to negative self-talk and a defeated mindset. I talk about small changes I've made in how I approach simple chores or activities I enjoy, which have begun to change how I think about those things, less restricted by the all-or-nothing thinking. Bringing this exposure to flexibility in accomplishing everyday tasks has made it easier for me to work in this way as a language learner. No longer believing that study time must be a solid hour studying vocab and grammar with a textbook, for example, has better postured me to study more throughout the day and consider all the things I'm actually doing with my languages that didn't feel like "studying" in the past. As a busy mother, expat, and student during the pandemic, it hasn't been easy to find time for the language learning things I want to do. But learning to identify and work against this ingrained pull toward all-or-nothing has made so much difference in how I learn languages (and accomplish other things), as well as in how I now see and celebrate my language progress along the way. The best way to learn a language, with polyglots Alex Rawlings & Lindie Botes, and neuroscientist Thomas Bak

In the first episode of More Than Words series 2, we address the most frequently asked language question: ‘What is the best way to learn a language?’, particularly as adults with busy lives. Joining our host Alex Rawlings to help answer this are three guests that have been doing it for many years.

Thomas Bak is a reader in human cognitive neuroscience from Edinburgh University, Lindie Botes is a polyglot who shares her language learning tips with over 250,000 followers on her Youtube channel, and Talli Menchion is a German language tutor for Rosetta Stone.

They tuned in from 3 different continents and with over 25 languages between them, you’ll have plenty of knowledge to apply to your own language learning journey, which is summarised at the end. Enjoy!
