Our First Time Working with a Coach - Miss Jackie

What a great weekend we had.  Our team worked with Jackie Andrews as our coach for the Grid Life event at NJMP.  Jeremy and Nick were in the advanced HPDE group in their E46 BMW 3-series street'ish cars.  Jennifer was in our B Spec Fit in HPDE and Vicki was in HPDE in our new E46 race car but switched to our Honda Fit when we had a mechanical issue.  Bill was also in the B Spec Fit and competed in the Sundae Cup series, securing a solid last place.

While we often talk about car control, we have yet to really discuss the differences between catching a car that is front wheel drive vs catching a car that is rear wheel drive.  During the discussion, something comes up that Vicki does on track that totally derails the rest of the discussion.  We will likely have to come back to this topic in another DwD or a guest appearance.  Stay tuned for the first ever intervention on our podcast and the first time Bill is speechless.

When trying to improve as a driver there are many instances where the same driver can be overdriving their car and at other points on the track can be underdriving.  In addition, the best of us also can have areas where we do one or the other and our lap times area adversely affected.  For this episode, we talk about some indications of a driver under driving their car and other indications where the driver driving the car.  While people grow in their driver education and skills, most will have a personality predisposition towards one side of the spectrum generally.  We use this episode of DwD to try to explain the jargon and help you determine where and when you may be under or over driving and some things to do to continue to improve.

DwD 346:  Track Selection:  The Impact on Learning

DwD 346:  Track Selection:  The Impact on Learning

On this episode of Dominating with Dawson, we wanted to discuss an aspect of racing education that can often be overlooked.  The typical decision path to getting a racing license or going to an HPDE event or a track day is to find the closest track to you that has an event that fits within your schedule.  This is likely to be what you do as well.  However, one factor that is neglected in this methodology is the impact that the track design and layout can have on your learning and progression as a driver.  There are many tracks that have very little run off room or walls, trees, rocks, etc. that are very close to the track and can make a small off track event a potentially very large cost event.  It can also affect the comfortability of the driver towards pushing the car and their personal driving limits during the event.  We talk about a few examples of tracks that are very forgiving and a few that we have been to that have layouts that are not quite as friendly.  This is not to say that it is the tracks “fault” because in the end the responsibility always remains within the driver’s seat and it is their responsibility to maintain control of the car and determine when/if they are going to push towards the limit.  We love every single track but wanted to point out something that should be taken into account, especially as you are in your middle stages of learning and progressing as a driver.  As a bonus, for the exact same price, we include a great story of an early HPDE event in Ben Dawson’s HPDE history.

If you have any favorite tracks to work on your skills or push your limits, please let us know.  Also, if we missed a few of the higher consequence tracks or turns, please let us know in a podcast review or on our social media, or send us an email at GarageHeroesInTraining@gmail.com and we can share it in an upcoming Dominating With Dawson.

We have an upcoming race at NJMP’s Thunderbolt track next weekend, so we took advantage of the NASA Northeast’s HPDE event this weekend to get a bit of track time for our friends from the Shifting Points podcast who will be racing with us.  This will be Jess’s first ever race and today was her first ever track day and great preparation for the race.  Vicki was going to explode if we made her wait any longer for a review of the day, so here is an unedited episode with Vicki and Jeremy asking Jess about her first time on track.  Oh, Bill was there too.

Audra and Lisa will be arriving tonight for Sunday’s events.  We will obviously be talking more about this weekend in upcoming episodes of our podcast and perhaps even on the Shifting Points podcast.

GHIT 0313:  Track Day Recap from our HPDE Event with NASA Northeast at NJMP’s Lightning Track

Jennifer and Vicki had their first trip the track this year at the NASA Northeast HPDE event at NJMP’s Lightning track.  Our event prep had a few issues with our Honda Civic inaugural shake down.  The issue is still TBD at this point.  Jennifer was in the HPDE 2 group and Vicki was in the HPDE3/4 group.  Bill was primarily concerned with instructing two students this weekend, both we on a track for their maiden voyage.  The weekend was a mix of highs and lows, many highs and really only one low.  We go over our weekend and how everyone progressed.  Both Jennifer and Vicki improved significantly over the winter off season, and we go into several of their accomplishments and the details.  The post race weekend hangover is real, and we all tried to stay focused and coherent with varied results, lol.  Our next event is later this month at Lime Rock Park and then our back-to-back racing weekends at PittRace with AER and then the 24 Hours of Lemons.  We also cover some of the trickier aspects of growing as a driver and some of the precautions to be aware of, especially if you have a significant improvement on your speed.

DwD 0295:  Discussing and Defining Driving at "X" Tenths

DwD 0295:  Discussing and Defining Driving at "X" Tenths

On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we talk about one of those concepts that is always discussed in the paddocks, especially at HPDE's and endurance races.  This week we go through a discussion of driving "intensity" that is often referred to in the arbitrary units of "tenths" as in driving at 8 tenths or 9 tenths or never drive at 10 tenths in an endurance race etc.  What does this really mean?  We discuss this after a quite side discussion on driving other peoples cars.  Then we wrap this up with a tremendous article that our friend Peter Krause and former guest wrote about an example of a quantitative description of his definition of each of the "tenths" from low intensity to the higher and highest levels possible.

We hope the discussion is helpful in not only starting to refer to each level on a common reference but also the discussion it leads to when describing and defining your own personal driving limits and target.

On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, another listener submitted question leads to a discussion of getting advanced too quickly in HPDE.  While this may initially be flattering to one's ego, it may not be the best for the HPDE student's overall progress and development as a driver and can also lead to increased risk on track that does not directly lead to increased skill for the driver and/or other drivers on track.

GLTC, Sundae Cup, and their HPDE Program

Adam Jabaay returns to talk all things GRIDLIFE.  Adam is the co-founder of the GRIDLIFE event series and the series is designed to be the track events that the GRIDLIFE team would want to attend.  We had a series on last year that covered several of the wheel to wheel GLTC (Grid Life Touring Cup) series.  During this episode, we go over the 2022 series and several of the other events in the series including their time attack (fast lap counts) racing series and the GRIDLIFE HPDE program.  We have a plan to attend our first GRIDLIFE event this year and will be participating in the event at Lime Rock.  If you haven't heard of GRIDLIFE, it is definitely not a typical track event and in many ways, the track events are only the beginning of the festivities.

    Highlights for this episode are:

    1)  We introduce our favorite master carpenter and the Norm Abrams of racing.

    2)  Bill gives away one of our upcoming 300 episode listener quiz questions.

    3)  Adam and Bill share some podcast anecdotes.  There is more post episode if you are in need of curing your insomnia.

    4)  Bill is very jealous of Adam's upcoming Ice Battle racing event.  Where we has been very cold enough but it does not seem to be an option anywhere nearby.  Ice racing remains on our post plague bucket list.

    5)  Ever wonder what is GRIDLIFE?  Adam does a great review if you are not already familiar.

    6)  We had a chance to talk with ADAM about the history that led to the creation of GRIDLIFE and has allowed them to become a very popular sprint racing series that has live streaming viewer numbers that would make many professional series jealous.

    7)  Adam goes into the recent changes to the GLTS series to a 200 treadwear tire series including the thought process that led to the change.

    8)  What did Skip Barber think of GRIDLIFE and what will be going on at the Lime Rock event.

    9)  How GRIDLIFE has grown and how you can participate in the event.

    10)  How GRIDLIFE organizes their HPDE groups, events, and instructors.

    11)  Bill cannot wait anymore and we get into the GRIDLIFE Sundae Cup series.  Our car is being prepped for the Lime Rock event and several HPDE's this year.

    12)  What is coming for GRIDLIFE and how the east and west coast can expect to see events in the 2022 and more in 2023.

    13)  Bill launches his appeal for a wheel to wheel Sundae Cup race.  Logistics are always a concern, but we would be there.  Even better for an enduro.

    14)  We almost got off without going into RV life, but as expected we did not try terribly hard.

GHIT 0263: Justin Barbry - Track Night In America

Do you know anyone who always wanted to drive on track but didn't think it was possible?

Do you talk to people about driving on track and they don’t understand but you know they would?

Do you want a bigger racing budget?  Perhaps the CFO of the house isn’t involved in our sport (yet).

Vicki and Bill have attended several Track Night In America events and had a blast.  It is a great way to see if you or someone you know would like driving on track without a lot of prep, money, or time required.  We have often said that autocross was the gateway drug to high performance driving, but what if you don’t have a vendetta (yet) against small orange cones?  This may be the best alternative we have found without jumping in with both feet to a full track weekend etc. We will need to have Justin on again to talk about his driving and racing exploits and hopefully subject him to our F&F Storytime segment.

GHIT 0261 Our NJMP HPDE Event - Part Deux

We had a large group of drivers at the recent NASA Northeast HPDE event at NJMP’s Lightning course.  Since schedules did not fully coincide last week, we broke our group up into two different episodes.  We start off with our usual goals for the weekend and cover how the event went.  For this episode, we had Audra on who had never been to this track and was driving her 2017 BMW M2 for the weekend.  Adam came to the event and was going to use Bill’s M3 but due to mechanical issues, he had to use Vicki’s 1999 turbo NB Miata for one of his stints.  Elizabeth was trying her new to her SpecE30 on the track.  Lisa returns for a second visit on this event and drove Audra’s M2 at the event in the Hyperdrive session

    Highlights from this episode include:

    1)  We start off with our personal goals for the event.  Each event we try to make sure we each have at least one goal, but no more than 3 for the weekend.

    2)  Elizabeth had a bit of motion sickness after going out with Bill as a passenger.  We may have found a cure for this, hopefully it will prevent motion sickness as well.  We will test this again at our next few events.

    3)  Each level of the HPDE has a download session and some of the levels have classrooms during the weekend.  We discuss the benefits of each and offer some suggestions for further improvement.

    4)  Highlights from the weekend and our traditional Good, Bad, and the Ugly

    5)  Adam advanced from HPDE 1 to HPDE 2.

    6)  Audra advanced from HPDE 1 to HPDE 2.

    7)  Vicki advanced from HPDE 2 to HPDE 3.

    8)  Elizabeth advanced from to HPDE 2.

    9)  We also shared a ton of Ahh Hah moments we had at this event.  Its awesome to hear how everyone of us progressed.

    10)  Adam gave a good review of driving the E46 M3 vs the turbo NB Miata.

GHIT 0256: Our NJMP Lightning HPDE - November 2021

GHIT 0256: Our NJMP Lightning HPDE - November 2021

    Part 1 of 2

On this episode, we cover our latest HPDE event at NJMP's Lightning track with NASA Northeast.  The track and the weather was a bit cold but we had a great time and a large groups of drivers and cars.  We even had all 4 levels of the HPDE groups covered with at least one driver in each.  To make things even better, Jen and Vicki's sister Debbie was driving in her first event and first time ever on track.

A quick rundown of who and in what is:

    HPDE 1 Drivers:

Debbie in our 2019 ND Miata

Audra in her 2017 M2 BMW

Adam in our 2004 M3 BMW (E46 for you cool kids)

    HPDE 2 Drivers:

Elizabeth in her new to her Spec E30 for the first time on track

Jennifer in our 2019 ND Miata

Vicki in her freshly street tuned 1999 turbo NB Miata

    HPDE 4 and Instructing:

Bill shared the 2004 M3 with Adam

    Hyperdrive:

Lisa went out in Audra's M2

The event was fantastic and everyone improved greatly after the two days.  Notably, we had several drivers advance in the NASA HPDE ladder:

Adam was advanced into HPDE 2 after the first session

    Audra advanced into HPDE 2

and Vicki advanced into HPDE 3 for the first time.

For all the details, and the Good, Bad, and the Ugly, why not listen?

    Highlights Include:

    1)  Both Lisa and Debbie were first time track drivers this weekend and it can be eye opening to remind everyone of what it was like the first time on track.

    2)  We cover our personal goals for every driver going into the event and we see how everyone did after both days.  (short summary is awesome)

    3)  Car prep stories were relatively mild this time until they weren't on our first stint Saturday morning.

    4)  What it was like for Debbie at her first track event and first time ever at a track.

    5)  Did we hook any new drivers?  Well we did start planning a trip in July to another HPDE event, lol.

    6)  Lisa was able to review what the Hyperdrive event is for everyone and how it went for her on Sunday.  She also compared driving on a track to her autocross event experience.

    7)  Did Jennifer (and Vicki) conquer their habit of lifting off the throttle midway on the long straights?

    8)  How did the drills Ross Bentley presented to them help?

    9)  We find a new issue for Vicki to work on in coming events and it may apply to your driving as well.

    10)  Our traditional Good, Bad, and the Ugly.

    11)  We may have found a solution to passengers who get motion sickness.  It worked once so far.  More testing to follow.  Vicki really needs to conquer this if her long term goal is to be an instructor.

    12)  What happened that led to Bill going off track in turn 5 in the M3.  Luckily we were able to fix the tire issue and get the car back on the track.

    13)  We end with a review of our winter challenge with 4 other racing podcast hosts and several listeners.  We are looking to drop at least 25 pounds and also grow as drivers through reading at least one book per month and also practicing our driving by karting or iRacing.  Open to everyone so come on in and if you complete the challenge, you will be eligible for bunch of swag from the 5 podcasts.

The scorecard is located at https://garageheroesintraining.com/survive-the-25/ and you can keep track of our progress, once we have some.

    It's all in here.

    And more.
