Hua Hsu on Depeche Mode's "Violator" (1990)

Hua Hsu on Depeche Mode's "Violator" (1990)

The Album: Depeche Mode: Violator (1990) By the time Depeche Mode released Violator in 1990, they had already become one of the giants of the modern rock world but Violator took the group to new heights of global success. Dark and moody yet intimately dance-able, the group and their album marked a height of synth-pop’s growth across the 1980s, a zenith that would soon be eclipsed by the on-rush of grunge and competing forms of so-called “alternative” rock. Violator was the pick of guest Hua Hsu, staff writer at the New Yorker and English professor at Vassar College. For him, Violator was part of a soundscape of growing up in the Bay Area, least of all as an Asian American. As he and Oliver (flying solo this week) discuss, modern rock became a soundtrack for a generation of Asian American youth, at least those growing up in West Coast suburbs for whom songs centered on alienation and otherness felt all too familiar. Besides, as Hsu notes, we all had piano lessons so a music built around synthesizers was an easy sell. More on Hua Hsu

Three Perspectives on the Innovation Standouts from CES 2018 S13 Ep48

Three Perspectives on the Innovation Standouts from CES 2018 S13 Ep48

Among the emerging technologies, gadgets and hype, what innovation standouts were at CES 2018?  What trends have staying power?

With almost every startup claiming AI, I’m having flashbacks to the dot com era when every business changed its name to get in on the buzzword bandwagon.  Is there something behind the AI buzzword that substantiates the fervor?  Interestingly enough, while the competition intensifies in areas of innovation, I notice a new level of cooperation among industry leaders in other areas.

I welcomed three guests-Tim Bajarin, Steve Guggenheimer, and Teresa Hsu- to the mobile studio to discuss the innovation standouts we’ll see in 2018.

    Tim Bajarin

Tim Bajarin is President of Creative Strategies, Inc, and a renowned technology trends analyst.  During the interview, he shared his view of  some innovation standouts in Augmented Reality (AR), 8K TV and Voice User Interface.

[shareable cite="Tim Bajarin"]Don’t create what you think the customer wants – address the pain points to create the solution.[/shareable]

Tim’s eyes weren’t on AI so much as AR.  He anticipates AR becoming more sophisticated in its capabilities and uses. He envisions an evolution of AR technology that eventually delivers real time information and overlays of data through a pair of voice command AR glasses.

Tim considers the leap in TV resolution to 8K remarkable.  Sometimes the drivers that propel innovation come from unusual places.

Voice User Interface technology is a neck and neck competition in an ecosystem battle.  In Tim’s opinion, Amazon has emerged as an unexpected leader because they asked the right questions.  He advises clients: don’t create what you think the customer wants – address the pain points to create the solution.

Interested in hearing more from Tim?  Follow him on Twitter @bajarin or visit his website Creative Strategies

    Steve Guggenheimer

Steve Guggenheimer has been a long time executive at Microsoft having most recently been Microsoft Chief Evangelist. In his new role as Microsoft Corporate Vice President of AI Business, Steve has shared what he sees as the real benefits of AI solutions.  In summary -- he sees AI as a phenomenal area for innovation.

[shareable cite="Steve Guggenheimer"]Take time to experiment and apply AI to focused areas for innovative solutions.[/shareable]

Three types of industries Steve believes AI can be applied to are:

    1.    Businesses with voice driven and agent based front ends.
    • Explore cognitive services, agent technology or bot framework and know how to use them.
    1.    Businesses with a significant amount of data.
    • Apply machine learning tools to data to drive real insight.
    1.    Businesses with a horizontal problem.
    • Build a solution from the ground up using AI.

His advice: take time to experiment and apply AI to focused areas for innovative solutions.

You can follow Steve on Twitter @stevenguggs  and discover more about AI and what it can do for your business at www.microsoft.com/en-us/ai.

    Teresa Hsu

The technologies on display cover a broad spectrum across all avenues of our lives.  Teresa Hsu, Senior Manager with Consumer Technology Association (host of CES), shared that the trend is not just gadgets, but the technology inside and behind products that make them smarter.

Clarkie feat. Joel & Homer Live at Breakfast of Champions 1.1.13
BOC has become such an institution in this town, and we were thrilled and anxious to play the main inside stage at 8 am this year bright and early. We had a great crew of friends and family surrounding the stage and Mighty was already packed. As we did last year, I played with my fellow band members Joel Kellogg on bass and Homer Hsu on Violin. We came up with a sultry and sexy house mix that we thought would be rockin' those wee hours in the morning. Many of the revelers there had been up all the night, and the crowd and energy was electric inside. Thanks to the Space Cowboys for continuing to give us this grand stage to showcase our energy and vibe. And thanks for all our friends and family who were there with us...even you Nicole...despite turning off the whole system half way through the set - it didn't harm the vibe at all :0) Tracklist: Running - The Scumfrog Like You - Hot Since 82 Blow Up - Dj Lion Keep Going - DJ Anna Chosen - UMEK, Mike Vale Off Da Hook - Funkerman Midnight Mobing - Bart Skills Hey (Nah Neh Nah) - Milk & Sugar Taking Me - Uto Karem Ghost - DJ Dan Elvis was a DJ - Phunk Investigation Rodeo - Mattias, G80's DJ Clarkie Live musical accompaniment from Joel Kellogg(bass) & Homer Hsu (violin)

San Francisco Poetry Hotel Podcast: Lunation - Earth Works and Sky Flower

San Francisco Poetry Hotel Podcast: Lunation - Earth Works and Sky Flower
Earth Works and Sky Flower From our struggle on earth, a flower grows. This is the bird song of humans. The flute is the breath; the drum is the heart beat. The voice that is the conduit of the soul finds a resting place in poetry. Lunation Lunation is Bill Mercer and Clara Hsu. They have been reading poetry with musical instruments such as the Japanese bamboo flute shakuhachi, singing bowl and hand drum since 2005. They perform in bookstores, cafes, libraries, museums and churches in the San Francisco Bay Area. Clara's web site: http://clarahsu.com For more information about John Rhodes, the videographer, go to: http://rhodespoetry.com

San Francisco Open Mic Poetry Hotel: Clara Hsu

San Francisco Open Mic Poetry Hotel: Clara Hsu
Here is a video of Clara Hsu at the Sacred Grounds Cafe, Feb. 09. Here is a little about Clara from her web site http://clarahsu.com : When she was a little girl, Clara wanted to be a hermit and martial artist living in the mountains of China. Life's mysterious path took her to the United States. In this reality, she practices the art of multi-dimensional being: mother, musician, philanthropist, activist, purveyor of Clarion Music Center (a world music shop of exotic musical instruments), traveler, and ultimately, poet. Clara was a nominee for the Pushcart Prize in poetry (2001). Some of her poems can be found in the Homestead Review, the North Coast Review, the Haight Ashbury Literary Journal, and the internet journal Red River Review. Her poem on censorship was published in 2003 by the North American Folk Music and Dance Alliance. Clara gives feature readings at various Bay Area venues and benefit events, but her home is the Sacred Grounds Café (Hayes and Cole), where poetry reading happens every Wednesday night. In December 2005, Clara sold her music business of 23 years to focus on her art and her unusual performance ensemble Lunation, which combines Chinese and original poetry with Asian traditional instruments. She is also developing the concept of the Poetry Hotel, organizing free social activities for the poet community in the San Francisco Bay Area.
