POD 24 | But What About The Christian Sexual Ethic?

POD 24 | But What About The Christian Sexual Ethic?

    SHOW NOTES:

Have you ever felt that the Christian sexual standard is overwhelmingly narrow? In this episode, we delve into the topic of Christian sexual ethics with our host, Bill Gorman, and guests Ben Beasley and Nikki Dieker. Together, they navigate the complex landscape of human sexuality, revising Christ Community’s paper to make it more relevant to today's cultural moment. Throughout the conversation, they discuss the theological and practical implications of the Christian sexual ethic, addressing questions about church life, gender dysphoria, and more. They also highlight the importance of community, spiritual discipline, and the pursuit of Jesus in navigating these challenging conversations. Get ready for a thought-provoking and insightful discussion that offers guidance and resources for those seeking to follow Jesus in today's world.

    THREE KEY TAKEAWAYS:

    1. Identity and Vulnerability: They discuss the  importance of questioning one's identity in relation to core beliefs of the Christian faith, and the need for a supportive and safe community within the church, especially in dealing with the vulnerability and brokenness associated with discussing Christian sexual ethics.
    2. Community and Accountability: The significance of being involved in a faith community surrendered to scripture, rich spiritual friendships, and the importance of accountability in living out a Christian life and sexual ethic. The emphasis on the communal nature of faith and the need for support from others in following Jesus.
    3. Spiritual Discipline and Faith: The impact of rigorous spiritual discipline, self-mastery, and faith, including spiritual disciplines like prayer, study, and fasting, in guiding one's life and recognizing and redirecting bodily desires.

    QUOTES:

"We need each other. And so I think, yeah, we need those mothers and fathers who've gone before us. We need those brothers and sisters who are running beside us. And we need those kids that we're encouraging that are coming behind us."

    — Nikki Dieker

“We are all sexually broken. So yeah, it highlights that this is something that rubs up against each one of us in deeply personal places, because we're all broken."

    — Nikki Dieker

"The traditional Christian sexual ethic just feels like, to our moral taste buds, it almost feels, like, absurd. It doesn't, you know, like, it doesn't taste well."

    — Ben Beasley

"Being involved in a faith community, is key. A community that is surrendered to scripture. That's where life is. And when we follow Jesus, we follow him through his word."

    — Ben Beasley

How Should Christian Parents Approach Sex Education?

How Should Christian Parents Approach Sex Education?

Apostolics and other conservative Christians frequently object to public school sex education programs, often because the messages communicated in these classes contradict biblical morality. How should Christian parents address the subjects of sex and human sexuality with their children? Dr. David K. Bernard shares his perspectives as a parent and pastor on this important question.

Weekend Edition 08 - The Conversation You Need To Hear About Human Sexuality and Gender with David Fitch

Weekend Edition 08 - The Conversation You Need To Hear About Human Sexuality and Gender with David Fitch

Jeff sits down with David Fitch, PhD from Northern Seminary in Chicago. David is a professor of Theology, Culture, and Ethics at the Seminary. They talk about the questions you've had for several years now, like 1) How do I interact with people who are in same-sex relationships? 2) How can I be true to Scripture and love people well? and 3) How should I think and lead in light of the massive cultural shifts in sexuality, marriage, and gender in recent years?

This conversation just scratches the surface, but it's a great start on these topics! If you want to listen to David more, catch him on the Theology on Mission Podcast with Mike Moore. Check out Northern Seminary at Seminary.edu.

Why Does God Care about Sex and Marriage?

Why Does God Care about Sex and Marriage?

Why is sex between consenting adults any of God's business? That certainly seems to be the prevailing attitude of Western society. This "anything goes" sexual ethic directly contradicts the Scriptures, which clearly teach that God has established boundaries around human sexual expression. But why does God think those boundaries are necessary?

Dr. David K. Bernard explains how both sociology and science support the biblical teaching that sex is permissible only within a marriage relationship between one man and one woman. Dr. Bernard's answer will provide clarity to anyone who has ever asked why God cares what consenting adults do behind closed doors.

The Gay Agenda & Pedophilia Scare Conspiracy Theory

The Gay Agenda & Pedophilia Scare Conspiracy Theory

On July 1st, 2022, the controversial Parental Rights in Education bill, or as the political left dubs it, the Don't Say Gay law, will go into effect, while progressives and human rights advocates say that this endangers LGBTQ+ youth and promotes discrimination. The conspiracists view this law as a pushback against "The Gay Agenda."  A conspiracy theory that goes back to the late 1970s when Anita Bryant launched her anti-homosexual campaign in the name of Christian morality and the protection of children. In today's episode, Nelson revisits the foundations of the Gay Agenda movement and how it has influenced the anti-gay rhetoric that currently threatens the LGBTQ+ community in Florida. As well as address the pedophilia scare that has been successfully weaponized by conspiracy theorists in creating fear and hostility within the political left and the queer community.

Ep. QS97: Rachel Krantz + Jen Winston (May 5, 2022)

When Rachel Krantz met and fell for Adam, he told her that he was looking for a committed partnership—just one that did not include exclusivity. In her nonfiction debut, Open: An Uncensored Memoir of Love, Liberation, and Non-Monogamy, Krantz explores these questions with an unflinching eye and page-turning storytelling, tracing her search to understand what non-monogamy would do to her heart, her mind, and her life through interviews with scientists, psychologists, and people living and loving outside the mainstream. For the book’s virtual launch, Krantz joined us along with Jen Winston, author of Greedy, for a frank and heartfelt conversation on non-monogamy, bisexuality, “stigmatization, feeling too much yet not enough of an identity, and struggling through the accidental poetry of everyday life” (--K., Greenlight event host)--and a resounding reminder to write the book you need to write. The Misconception Behind The Minor Attracted People Movement & Why It's Starting On The Wrong Foot

On November 8th, Allyn Walker an assistant professor at Old Dominion University gave an interview on why minor-attracted people (MAPs) should be destigmatized. As a result, this created immense controversy among the political right and advocates against sexual child abuse. Was this the beginning of the demoralization of the United States? Have the conspiracy theories of the LGBTQ+ pushing a pedophilic agenda come to fruition.  In this episode, Nelson discusses the controversy behind MAPs and assesses the reactions from right-wing conservatives.
