Hydrogen Car Infrastructure - Jackie Birdsall, Toyota

Hydrogen Car Infrastructure - Jackie Birdsall, Toyota

"Fuel cells create electricity by stripping electrons from hydrogen atoms; the hydrogen then bonds to oxygen to create water, while the electrons power the electric motor. The result is an electric vehicle that is fueled with hydrogen from a pump rather than electrons drawn from the nation's electrical power grid."

    Car & Driver magazine

A key part of President Biden’s ambitious infrastructure bill is incentives to increase the adoption and use of alternative fuel vehicles. Some of those car and truck options run on hydrogen fuel cells, and they need infrastructure too.  These are what I call “the other electric vehicles,” because they run on electricity but not on batteries like your neighbor’s Tesla.

So, what are they and how do they work? Listen to Jackie Birdsall, Senior Engineer of these vehicles at Toyota, explain how they work and give great career advice, with Green Connections Radio host Joan Michelson.

    You'll hear:

    • How hydrogen fuel cell vehicles work
    • Where the infrastructure is for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and when refueling will be more available.
    • What these EVs cost and how to get government tax incentives for buying them.
    • Why hydrogen fuel cells vehicles travel more miles than battery-powered EVs, and charge faster.
    • And, important career advice, including how Toyota is empowering women specifically.

“Open yourself to all kinds of opportunities and say ‘yes’ to them and it will help you find your passion and …step out of your comfort zone.”

Jackie Birdsall on Green Connections Radio podcast

You’ll also want to listen to:

    • Bonnie Datta, Siemens, expert on electric vehicle regulatory issues.
    • Shirley Meng, PhD., UC San Diego, electric vehicle battery research & development.
    • Rachel Gutter, President of the International Well Building Institute, on questions to ask before you go back into your workplace.
    • Michelle Wyman, Executive Director of National Council of Science and the Environment on how to talk to policymakers about science to keep science in policy decisions.

043 Fueling the Future with Hydrogen

043 Fueling the Future with Hydrogen
Director of the documentary film “At War with the Dinosaurs,” John Michael Parkan is a hydrogen energy evangelist extolling the virtues and promise of a burgeoning hydrogen economy. Hydrogen is the third most abundant element on earth and is a sustainable green-energy alternative to fossil fuels that has been around since the early 1800’s. All the major car manufacturers have produced a hydrogen fuel cell car and the technology is more planet-friendly than battery-powered electric vehicles.

So why is it that, when so many of us think of hydrogen, our primary reference point is images of the fire-engulfed Hindenburg, an image rife with the misappropriation of danger, while hydrogen fuel is actually so much safer than gasoline?

Join us for this VERY illuminating interview and hear the true story of hydrogen and learn how this technology may be the solution for a transition away from a fossil fuel economy to a truly sustainable future. John Michael addresses the perceptions and prejudices related to hydrogen power and provides us with cogent steps we can take to support the emerging hydrogen economy.

About John Michael: John Michael Parkan attended the prestigious USC Film School and has shot, produced and directed multiple commercials, music videos, and shorts, in addition to special features for theatrical and library films. At War with the Dinosaurs is his first feature length documentary film.

032 The Magic of Microbes with Dr. Christo Miliotis

032 The Magic of Microbes with Dr. Christo Miliotis

Join us for an exploration of microbial magic with Dr. Christo Miliotis, eco-entrepreneur and microorganism enthusiast. From gut & soil health to delectable foods, pest & weed control to hydrogen gas, learn how microbes are the key to a thriving future. A renaissance man whose passion for microbes has led him from farm to food and beyond, Christo is a tireless inventor. Guided by the principles of regenerative biodynamic agriculture he’s developed “Agent Green,” an organic fertilizer and weed killer along with a leaf fertilizer and insecticide he’s named “Bee Friendly.” His love of fermentation inspired a beet kvass he’s calling “Up Beet” and a special concoction he’s christened “Fire In The Belly” that contains everything required for optimal nutrition. Christo is even taking his obsession with microbes to the screen with his upcoming documentary entitled “The Universe Beneath Our Feet.” This conversation will open your eyes to an unseen world that shapes the very fabric of our lives.
