Within each of us is a desire to connect with the Divine and reach out to a Power higher and bigger than ourselves. That's because God has created us with default settings and one of those default settings is the desire to pray. Sadly, many of us have turned this setting off or we've allowed it to get crowded out by fear, worry, busyness, or pride.
Every day leading up to Christmas we will be reading, studying, and reflecting on a chapter of the Gospel of Luke. There are twenty-four days leading up to Christmas and twenty-four Chapters in Luke. We are going to enter the celebration of the birth of Jesus with a full context of his life and ministry. My hope and prayer for each of us is that we fully experience a closeness to Jesus like never before.
In Luke 9 we essentially see the preparation of the twelve disciples for ministry through multiple stories and scenes. Not that things haven’t been serious before but following Jesus feels like it has been ratcheted up. We see Jesus through the feeding of the 5,000 use that as a teaching moment to explain the kind of Messiah he would be and what it looks like to follow him, we read about Peter John and James witnessing the glory of Jesus, seeing Moses and Elijah and speaking about Jesus’ departure from the world, several occasions they were reminded of what Jesus came to accomplish. The beauty of this is that these lessons were not just for the twelve. It prepares all who decide to follow Jesus.

Have you ever worn yourself out with worry? Going to bed late, waking up early. Working harder, trying more, trying to be more productive, striving more, somehow you’ll “make it work?” Do you have young kids or have had them before? Do you know what it feels like to be sleep-deprived? Do you have a hard time falling asleep because you’re trying to solve some problem? Paul’s joy at the mere thought of the Philippian church is undeniable in the letter, and it’s that same joy that he wanted the recipients to possess as well. To lead the Philippians to this truth, Paul took them directly to Jesus, teaching them that a community of believers living in harmony with one another comes only through mutual humility modeled after the Savior. Paul gives us some of the most profound reflections on the incarnation (God becoming a man) in the entire New Testament.
