S1E3: "Will 'Global Privacy Control' (GPC) Fix Web Privacy?" with Roy Smith (PrivacyCheq)

S1E3: "Will 'Global Privacy Control' (GPC) Fix Web Privacy?" with Roy Smith (PrivacyCheq)

In this episode, I’m joined by Roy Smith, CEO and founder of PrivacyCheq, a privacy tech company that develops privacy-enhancing technologies for mobile and web. We discuss the history of online privacy and data protection laws, current challenges within the ad tech space, and GPC, a newly proposed web standard for signaling privacy preferences.

    -----------
Thank you to our sponsor, Privado, the developer friendly privacy platform
    -----------

A most common myth that Roy sees end-users buying into is that cookie banners are all that a company need  deploy for compliance with modern privacy and data protection laws. Roy breaks down how adtech companies use "the cookie myth" to distort how people perceive what's required for operational compliance. He illustrates the tsunami of global privacy regulations related to adtech and the limitations that exist due to siloed consent data.

We dive deeper into the W3C's newly proposed Global Privacy Control (GPC) specification and how GPC lets users signal their desired privacy levels just by browsing the web. Roy unpacks why it was developed and what problems it solves on a legal level. He also highlights his concern that implementing GPC will create a false sense of privacy as GPC signals depart from consumer expectations.

Listen to  our conversation on the benefits and drawbacks of GPC.

    -----------
    Listen to the episode on
Apple Podcasts, Spotify, iHeartRadio, or on your favorite podcast platform.

    • The global response to surveillance capitalism
    • The challenges and downfalls of the IAB's Transparency & Consent Framework (TCF)
    • The problem of “consent fragmentation”
    • The W3C’s newly-proposed Global Privacy Control (GPC) specification
    • Where Roy sees opportunities for improvement
    • The nuances between WC3’s "do-not-sell or share interaction" and "do-not-sell or share preference"
    • Roy's point of view regarding web privacy and whether GPC is sufficient for signaling privacy preferences, the benefits to the adtech industry, and potential drawbacks.

IAB CEO David Cohen believes ‘the future of video will be streamed’

IAB CEO David Cohen believes ‘the future of video will be streamed’
To David Cohen, an industry veteran who now serves as the Interactive Advertising Bureau’s chief executive officer, the media landscape is clear. “The future of video will be streamed,” Cohen says on The Current Podcast. “There is no doubt in my mind that it is going to happen. The main question is how much the industry needs to evolve from now until then.” Cohen breaks down the biggest challenges around being at the center of the digital advertising industry, Netflix starting up an ad-supported tier, the Great Resignation, and why he believes the upfronts and NewFronts will merge in this episode. “This is going to be one video market,” he says. “There is no need for the time and effort of separating them. It is a fallacy today and it will certainly be a fallacy in the future.”

Why 'legacy thinking' is holding back CTV's ad potential

Next in Marketing spoke to IAB CEO David Cohen about the state of ad-supported streaming, and why he's pushing traditional TV advertisers to shift their mindsets when it comes to pricing strategy, measurement and what role the medium will play over time. Cohen also spoke about how many brands have been dragging their feet when it comes to preparing for massive changes in ad targeting, and what he thinks the prospects are for a national data privacy law.

The Latest Industry Buzz Around Identity and Addressability
AdTech is in the midst of a sea change, fueled by the depreciation of identifiers and the rapid changes in privacy and regulation. In this episode, Stephen shares his perspective on the players in this space and how they could be impacted by the end of an era (cookiepocalypse). He believes everyone in AdTech has a collective responsibility to get involved on the front side, instead of being up in arms about where we land. Join us to hear how the foundation of digital advertising is impacted by addressability and measurement, and how you can get involved.

Global Privacy Summit: IAPP with several snippets

Global Privacy Summit: IAPP with several snippets

In this episode of Serious Privacy, Paul Breitbarth introduces an episode where Dr. K Royal caught up with several individuals at the IAPP Global Privacy Summit held in Washington DC at the Marriott Marquis. It was a truly wonderful event, the first Global privacy Summit since 2019, with thousands of privacy professionals in attendance. Attendees included professionals from all over the world, those with nonprofits, with private companies, with start-up companies, government representatives, in-house and outside firm attorneys, security professionals, regulators, and more!

Join us to listen to snippets of conversation with some people you may know and some you may not. Featured in this episode are Trevor Hughes, CEO of the IAPP, Eduardo Ustaren of Hogan Lovells, David Cohen of IAB, Emil Ochotta with Google, Jörn Wittmann and Gabriela Mercuri with Scope Europe, and ShanShan Pa now with State Street.

Although K Intended to include short snippets from some truly world class keynote speakers and some of the sessions that she attended, the sound quality just wasn't good enough to be able to add them. We're pretty sure the IAPP will include some recordings but if they don't - just know if you weren't there, you missed a really good conference.

The Ban of Cookie Banners? (With Anne-Charlotte Recker and Julian Deckers)

The Ban of Cookie Banners? (With Anne-Charlotte Recker and Julian Deckers)

In this week of Serious Privacy by TrustArc, K Royal and Paul Breitbarth have a conversation with Anne-Charlotte Recker and Julian Deckers of the Belgian Data Protection Authority. Both work for the DPAs Litigation Chamber, which on 2 February 2022 released their long-awaited decision on the legality of the Transparency and Consent Framework (TCF) developed by the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB). The decision will likely have a significant impact on the future of cookie banners. Not only did the Belgian DPA find that the current banners following the TCF model are not transparent enough, they also use legal bases for many data collections that are not possible.

Join us as Anne-Charlotte and Julian explain all about the background of the procedure, the decision that was made and what to expect next. They also explain the concept of Real-Time Bidding that is used in online advertising (the PhD Thesis of dr. Rob van Eijk on this topic can be found here). Since our recording, the Dutch DPA has indicated to various media outlets that the use of the IAB TCF in the Netherlands should be ended effective immediately, thus going a step further than the Belgian DPA.

A quem dar a voz e o protagonismo, afinal?

Quais as possibilidades estratégicas e criativas a serem exploradas?
