AI and Coding: Beware of the Intersection

AI and Coding: Beware of the Intersection

Despite their advanced capabilities, artificial intelligence (AI) tools can occasionally misinterpret ambiguous documentation or lack the nuance necessary for complex decision-making. And that is why coders must continue to exercise their expertise and judgment when reviewing AI-assisted code assignment.

This level of vigilance is crucial for ensuring that AI-assisted coding assignment meets stringent standards of quality and compliance – as you’ll learn during the next live edition of Talk Ten Tuesdays. That’s when former American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) leader Angela Comfort will return to the weekly broadcast as our special guest to report the lead story on how coders need to be prepared to leverage AI technologies while safeguarding the quality and compliance of coding assignments.

How Safe is Safe? AHRQ Patient Safety Indicator Methodology Finally Revealed

How Safe is Safe? AHRQ Patient Safety Indicator Methodology Finally Revealed

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Patient Safety Indicators (PSIs) affect Leapfrog’s ubiquitous reputation scores and contribute approximately 15 percent to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital-Acquired Condition (HAC) penalty determinations of 1 percent of a hospital’s total inpatient reimbursement.

AHRQ finally released its PSI methodology for the 2023 fiscal year (FY) on Aug. 14, and it involves a significant expansion of the risk-adjusted universe to now include COVID and flag any fracture, not just hip fractures, not present at the time of the inpatient order as a patient safety event. Dr. James Kennedy will join the long-running Talk Ten Tuesdays Internet radio broadcast this coming Tuesday to report on what you need to do to protect your facility’s reputation and reimbursement.

Learn Important Revisions: 2024 CMS Part C Risk Model

Learn Important Revisions: 2024 CMS Part C Risk Model

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has released the finalized 2024 Part C risk adjustment model, which goes into effect Jan. 1, 2024. This revised model, V28, comes with substantial changes to the current V24 model, starting with using the ICD-10-CM classification system – which aligns with the rest of the healthcare system that has been using ICD-10 codes since 2015.

Comparing CMS V24 to V28, there is an increase in the number of Hierarchical Condition Categories (HCCs) and a decrease in the total number of ICD-10-CM codes that map to an HCC payment category.

During the next live edition of Talk Ten Tuesdays, Colleen Deighan Ejak, senior consultant with 3M, will share details of the revisions and how to outline a plan to get your organization ready to implement these changes.

Smart Strategies for Boosting Hospital Revenue

Smart Strategies for Boosting Hospital Revenue

Revenue leakage presents a huge challenge for healthcare organizations. According to a study by the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA), it can account for up to 5 percent of a healthcare organization’s net revenue – potentially making the difference between an entity being profitable or not profitable.

Fear not, however – there are solutions to tackle revenue leakage. One effective strategy is strong denial management. In fact, the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) found that healthcare organizations with robust denial management strategies experienced an incredible 15 percent increase in their overall net collection rates.

During the next live edition of the long-running and popular Talk Ten Tuesdays weekly Internet radio broadcast, Susie Vestevich, chief operating officer for TiaTech USA, will return to the broadcast to report on strategies intended to stop the leak.

A study by the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association (JAMIA) found that clinics can experience a 10 to 30 percent decrease in revenue due to coding errors alone, losing up to $125,000 per year. Moreover, the American Medical Association (AMA) estimates that coding errors cost the healthcare industry approximately $36 billion annually in lost revenue, denied claims, and potential fines.

During the next live edition of Talk Ten Tuesdays, Susie Vestevich, COO for TiaTech, will report on how errors are costing facilities and practices significant revenue losses. But she will also report on how five, ironclad strategies can be implemented to help prevent such losses. Her revenue cycle report is part of an ongoing services presented by TiaTech, USA and ICD10monitor.
