    2301 - A little longer than intended.

    2301 - A little longer than intended.

Some thoughts on "Architecture for VR" in relation to the difference angles from which architecture students and VFX artists approach their 3D models. Considering my own background in designing performance spaces (theatres, festival venues, etc) and how that relates to the creation of gathering places in virtual worlds.

The title refers to the fact that it's been (much) longer than intended since I last recorded one of these... but also that this episode is longer than 303 seconds in length. I'm allowing myself that as, really, the point here was to get going again. Getting the thing exactly right can come next.

This is also the first episode shared since I told some people (precisely two) that this exists. So... there's that.

    *         *         *         *         *         *         *

In this episode we talk about the power of design and its influence on well-being with the Founder and CEO of Studio Elsewhere, Mirelle Phillips. Mirelle and her team collaborate with various medical institutions to create environments that support patients, their families and healthcare workers in the journey to recovery and well-being.

Most of us have had the experience of going to a doctor's office or dentist or hospital or some sort of medical facility and having to wait.

Some of us may even have spent a night in a temporary bed hooked up to a machine reading out our vital statistics and a team of nurses, doctors and specialists busying around us trying to understand what was wrong and how to make it right.

Some of us might have even spent time lying on that bed in a hallway before a room was available, staring up at a ceiling at a large rectangular fluorescent light, an acoustic tile ceiling and a rather drab overall interior.

Some of us might have even been a patient with a long term stay in a medical facility or had to return regularly for treatments for our particular condition.

Or some of us may have been caregivers or family members who accompanied our loved ones to the medical facility or care for them daily at home.

And then there are the health care workers themselves who over the past few years have caried an extraordinary burden as frontline workers during the COVID pandemic that, during the early phases, put crushing pressure on the medical system worldwide.

Whether we are a patient, a caregiver or healthcare worker, environments designed for supporting the care and recovery journey affect the experience along the path. The design of healthcare environments influence things like recovery time, they can mitigate stress, anxiety and fear and provide a sense of agency for those who feel like their bodies, and lives, are no longer in their control.

Our minds and bodies can be deeply affected by buildings.

Well maybe I need to refine that, not putting all the pressure on the built places.

The environments we inhabit, natural or human made, affect us.

A whole field of cognitive science has emerged that recognizes the influence hat the environment has on our mind-body state call neuroaesthetics.

Neuroesthetics is a term coined by Semir Zeki in 1999[3]

A more formal definition was arrived at in the early 2000’s as the scientific study of the neural bases for the contemplation and creation of a work of art.[4]

It doesn’t just apply to what is happening in the brain while looking at a piece of art. Among other things, it finds applications to music, dance, poetry, music, places and buildings.

What neuroesthetics does is it uses neuroscience to explain and understand the aesthetic experiences at the neurological level and helps us understand the relationship to how we feel and what we experience through the arts and architecture.  Books like “Welcome to Your World: How the Built Environment Shapes Our Lives” by Sarah Williams Goldhagen and “Your Brain on Art” by Susan Magsamen and Ivy Ross are great examples of recent publications that help unpack how the environments we live in, and the art, music, dances, literature influences us.

On the show I have talked about ontological design – the idea that what we design designs us back. Neural connections in our brains are formed, reinforced or dismantled through a process of neuroplasticity by the experiences we have. Our environments shape us on a neurological level. Research is quite definitive about the idea that the environment has the capacity to help us recover from illness faster or make us perhaps diminish well-being.

And so the question arises…if we know that the environment has this profound effect on our minds and bodies, why is so much of what is built around us so banal?

This question goes beyond thinking about sustainability in design and building practice – though this is a critical consideration of addressing issues of global warming. Sustainable design practice should be a baseline for anything we build or manufacture.

What if places we built engaged the mind-body with a profound understanding of the impact of art, music, nature, and design, the study of neuroaesthetics?

If we did, we would have many more of the projects that Mirelle Phillips and Studio Elsewhere have created over the past few years.

Studio Elsewhere uses evidence-based and data-driven practices to develop virtual and physical interventions that promote brain health. They are pioneers of bio-experiential design - interactive, immersive environmental design using technology and physical design toward a healthier brain-body connection.

Their embedded emerging technology solutions support the needs of healthcare professionals, researchers, patients and caregivers using software and hardware development, emerging technology, immersive game design, and biophilic design to reimagine the experience of health, wellness, and care.

They have developed a model that allows for the development of a first-of-its-kind technology and design practice that leads with compassion, imagination, and inclusivity.

Mirelle Phillips is the Founder and CEO of Studio Elsewhere. She leads a team of designers and digital technology mavens developing bio-experiential technology to promote behavioural, cognitive, and social health.

While many of the application of Studio Elswhere’s work supports the well-being of patients, caregivers and healthcare workers, I can imagine a day when these big ideas find enormously impactful applications in the built environment across education, corporate interiors, retail, hospitality and almost every other place where brains and buildings connect.

Through Clärchens Ballhaus I am bringing a 19th century jewel with strong traditions into the 21st century. As a cultural investor I believe that community matters, and culture works. Artist on Sabbatical, father to three young men.

    SHOW INTRO:

Art and culture are connected in an intimate dance. Art, it could be said, is an expression of culture, and it’s kaleidoscopic manifestations are emblematic of the subsets of ideologies adopted by likeminded members of communities.

Art, in its myriad forms, comes to represent the meaning of experience and the values communities share.

Art challenges us. It poses questions and it seeks answers.

Art and design is all around us.

As we shape the world through art, architecture and design, it shapes us back. We both make and are made by the things we create.

In a digitally enabled world, we are increasingly exposed to a plethora of images we both make and share that shape our experience and understanding of the world.

The ubiquity and democratization of the image equally suggests a need for greater visual literacy – a common lexicon for understanding and discussing the power of images and the relationship to culture and community building.

Museums have a role to play, and there has been a movement to providing cultural experiences beyond the white wall for the past 40 some years. Traditional museum formats face challenges with the emergence of more immersive experiences that can be extraordinary.

According to Yoram Roth – Executive Chairman of Fotografiska | NeueHouse and the newly formed Culture Works, “…Over the last ten years, there has been a substantial growth of “culture as an experience.” For Roth, “Culture Matters. And, Culture Works.”

He suggests that “…The most recent development is driven by artists and collectives creating site-specific immersive cultural experiences that reside on a spectrum between fine art and the spectacular…”

Yoram Roth is on a mission to build a global cultural business and reinvent the museum experience for the modern world. He takes on this challenge with the awareness that there is as he has recently outlined in an article posted to LinkedIn, a “Looming Arms Race in the Cultural Experience Economy.”

In this well referenced piece, Yoramoutlines some of the inherent complexities of building a global cultural business within the context of an experience-seeking-consumer-world that is deeply immersed in the making of digitally-based images.

Dr. Ariel Anbar - Teaching and Learning the Process of Science

Ronald Beghetto talks with Ariel Anbar about his work with science teaching and learning, and if done right, how this can empower nonscientists for their whole life in how they access and understand information. They discuss the recent “bad rep” that science has received during the COVID-era, and Anbar explains how the real process of science is an ongoing set of observations and interpretations which leads to continuous tests and iterations, as recommendations improve with greater knowledge. Anbar also mentions his work on creating and using interactive digital technologies, which immerses students in virtual field trips based on what they are learning. He imagines more of this type of interactive digital learning technology in the future which will meet learners where they are, and get them to where they need to go in their science education journey.

XLIVE 2019: Evoking Response with Purposeful Technology

XLIVE 2019: Evoking Response with Purposeful Technology

In this episode of Backstage, Allison McMahan, Marketing & Communications Manager, and Dave Pooser, Director of Product Innovation, both from Alford Media, discuss the recent XLIVE Conference & Expo held in Las Vegas held Nov 17-19, 2019.

Allison and Dave both attended the annual Live Events & Entertainment trade show. Tech with a purpose and audience immersion emerged as two themes that loomed large over the three-day conference. Allison sums the technology part up as a shift from trying to chase the coolest and best technology to outdo the last event to ‘how does that technology enhance the attendee experience?

“When people pay money to come out to a conference, a convention, an event of any kind,” she adds, “They want to go have an experience.”

Dave points out, in the B2B conference and event space, an attendee may be there because of a company mandate. But that doesn’t mean she or he is interested. It is the job of the company planning the event to immerse that attendee in the experience and get them engaged.

Some of the industry trends Allison notes from XLIVE were Bluetooth and RFID Tracking. She says these methods, which are popular in the B2C space, are gaining a foothold in B2B as well. Allison also mentions the uptick of AR in mixed/merged reality as something with growth potential in the corporate market.

Dave’s most significant takeaway from the conference was the message of not relying on ‘technology itself’ to do the wowing of event attendees but to use the right technology to create an amazing experience for the attendee.

“Do that,” he said, “and the social media follow-through from attendees will come.”

Event Tech Trends Changing Attendees Expectations and Experiences

Event Tech Trends Changing Attendees Expectations and Experiences

Corporate meetings and conferences have long been characterized by tedious PowerPoint presentations echoing off the walls of fluorescent-lit hotel ballrooms. But thanks to new trends in event technology, these long-dreaded symposiums are getting a makeover. Immersive content and interactive engagement are just a couple of innovations changing the event industry.

Exploring this rising trend in this episode of Backstage is Ben MacKinney, Audio Services Manager, and Allison McMahan, Marketing and Communications Manager of Alford Media. The pair have their pulse on the rapidly changing industry of event technology and corporate events.

“People are tired of sitting in front of a PowerPoint for 90 minutes,” said Ben of traditional corporate events. As a result, audio-visuals that incorporate the idea of immersive entertainment have taken precedence. “One of the things we’re seeing is less PowerPoint and Keynote, and more advanced presentations with media servers,” he said. “We’re seeing a level of presentation that is much more than a PowerPoint slide. There are videos with motion and graphics moving in and out. So, there’s a lot more involved in content creation and the thought of how you’re going to build this presentation.”

Allison points to the influence of the entertainment industry as a major instigator to event changes, with clients requesting visuals they see on television award shows or integrating assets that make the experience “playful and fun.”

Is this change here to stay? Ben thinks so.

“It’s coming, whether you like it or not. And, you can either figure it out now or you can figure it out after everyone else already has,” he said.

Both end-users and industry clientele are demanding a more interactive, exciting event experience. Stunning productions with engaging event tech components don’t necessarily have to break the bank. “It’s really important that event planners and producers know their goal upfront…there is no off-the-shelf option at this point, so much of it is custom,” Allison said.

As event technology specialists are pushed to innovate, there’s no boundary to new, never-been-done-before audio-visuals. Allison said it’s an “open playing field,” with the most creative event tech experiences rising to the top.

VR is not just for gaming anymore. Other industries are starting to take advantage of immersive technologies for applications like product design and experiential marketing. Ford is using the technology to create virtual prototypes of new vehicles and Lionsgate is experimenting with VR experiences to promote movies. When Unity Technologies realized their platform was already being used by the auto and film industries—among many others—they brought in Tony Parisi to help the company expand its reach far beyond gaming.

Tony is a virtual reality pioneer, serial entrepreneur, author and angel investor. He currently serves as Head of VR and AR at Unity Technologies, where he is responsible for designing the company’s strategy for extended reality. Prior to joining Unity, Tony mentored VR and AR startups and worked as a consultant developing solutions for WebGL, virtual and augmented reality. He co-created the VRML and X3D ISO standards for networked 3D graphics and did the specification editing for the new 3D file format standard, glTF.

Tony joins us to discuss Unity’s storied background in extended reality and how the company is expanding beyond gaming to support product design, medical and data visualization and non-gaming entertainment applications. He shares his interest in AR and VR that touches the consumer, the factors that have made immersive marketing scalable, and how Unity is working with brands to explore possibilities in the space. Listen in as Tony speaks to Unity’s potential collaborations with developers as well as the company’s current work on a lightweight playback system and scriptable render pipeline.
