The medtech spinout treating Parkinson’s disease with vibrations – Charco Neurotech co-founder Lucy Jung

Lucy Jung, CEO and co-founder of Charco Neurotech, discusses spinning out a medical device startup from academia, the science behind treating Parkinson’s disease with vibrations, balancing regulation with innovation and how devices like Elon Musk’s Neuralink could “maximise our brain”.

Jung, who has a background in design, co-founded Charco Neurotech in 2019, launching out of Imperial College London. It has secured more than $10m in investment for its non-invasive, pebble-shaped device that delivers vibrotactile stimulation to the chest to improve motor performance and alleviate gait freezing for people with Parkinson’s. It can be linked with an accompanying smartphone app to track symptoms and customise treatment. The device is currently used by 900 people, with a further 12,000 on its waiting list.

Ep2: What Polar Ice Is Telling Us

Ep2: What Polar Ice Is Telling Us

Polar ice has a story to tell. Trapped in it are clues to the past -- dirt and dust, and air -- going back a million years . From this, climate scientists can figure out what was happening during past ice ages and warm periods. In each case, it all came down to carbon -- how much carbon dioxide was in the air.  And we're now at CO2 levels last seen in the Pliocene Epoch -- 2.5 to 5 million years ago, long before modern humans walked the earth.   Sure, we call ourselves homo sapiens, but glaciologist Martin Siegert says we're heading toward a 'stupid warm' future, and it's time to get smart.  He lays it all out here -- what's happening, what the ice is telling us, and what we need to do now.

Martin Siegert is a glaciologist with three decades of experience, including research in Antarctica., a professor, and co-director of the Grantham Institute - Climate Change and Environment, at Imperial College London (UK).

How Big News Media is Using Podcasts – with Jason Palmer

How Big News Media is Using Podcasts – with Jason Palmer

How does one get into an elite media publishing house such as the Economist. What goes in to producing one of the most credible and listened radio/ podcast shows out there?  Well we have just the right person - Mr. Jason Palmer on Things Have Changed!

    Post-doctoral Soul Searching: Science Journalism

Jason started his journey in the field of academia, as a physicist at the Lawrence Livermore labs. Initially, he thought his life was going to be spent in the lab, proving/disproving hypothesis. However, like any other PhD candidate, Jason had second-guessed his purpose and started thinking about where he would fit in. One of the things he had landed on was “Science Journalism”.

    Speaking “Econom-ese”

In 2019, as The Economist wanted to take a more serious step towards podcasting (They actually their first podcast in 2006). They were serious about audio and this new podcast was supposed to display that. The team was lead by Tom Standage, Deputy Editor and lead for digital strategy. In a medium article, Tom describes this effort as a way for '“The Economist to come to life in audio everyday”.

Check out this awesome medium article about how “The Intelligence” started”

Jason still currently hosts this podcast, probably coz he’s been doing a damn good job and his voice is, to quote an anonymous host on Things Have Changed, “sexier than the sound of my own name”. Also, to clear up the suspicion, Jason is 100% American but also 100% spent 20 years in Britain. I mean as far as his accent goes, it’s a Jason Palmer Accent.

But admittedly, his voice isn’t the reason we love “The Intelligence”, it’s because we identify with the content. The “Intelligence” is a great way to keep in-tune with the world around you. From stories about the famine happening in Yemen, to the shift in American Politics, the show brings together a really global view of news. At Things Have Changed, we are a group of immigrants that have benefitted from the truly diverse collection of people in the United States. Jed is from the Philippines, Shikher is from India, and Adrian's family is from Poland. When we have conversations, we are bringing our different perspectives to the table, and we find that absolutely vital for personal growth.

Learn about how Jason satiates his desire for learning and his incredible journey through science and journalism.

#6 David Hand - Dark Data and Why What You Don't Know Matters

Professor David Hand, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics and Senior Research Investigator at Imperial College London, has published over 300 scientific papers and 30 books, won many prestigious awards and was a president of the Royal Statistical Society twice. During this interview, Professor Hand explains what is dark data and why this simple, but highly influential concept, is widely overlooked. He also talks about the edge of the most successful quant hedge funds and why statistics is fundamentally different to mathematics. See our show notes for more information.

Cannabis geneticist Kevin McKernan returns with some counter-cultural perspectives about Coronavirus and stories about weed.

What if wearing masks exposed us to other diseases? What if by locking down the country the war machine was shut down? Kevin McKernan is a brilliant mind that is capable of looking at the world through as many perspectives as a prism.  Vance Crowe and Kevin McKernan talked about why cannabis smells so strongly, the consequence of mandatory masks and the riots in Minneapolis.

Vance pitches Saint Louis as the place to move for cannabis research and development due to the number of plant biologists and geneticists.  We discussed @Plantimals

GLOBAL HEALTH: Once-And-For-All TB Assay Brings Cheap, Sensitive, Specific, Seven-Day Diagnosis and Drug-Susceptibility Testing

GLOBAL HEALTH: Once-And-For-All TB Assay Brings Cheap, Sensitive, Specific, Seven-Day Diagnosis and Drug-Susceptibility Testing
Audio Journal of Global Health Issues Once-And-For-All TB Assay Brings Cheap, Sensitive, Specific, Seven-Day Diagnosis and Drug-Susceptibility Testing REFERENCE: N Engl J Med 355: 1539-50 DAVID MOORE, Imperial College, London and Lima A new test for TB, trialled in Peru, has proved more powerful and yet faster and cheaper than alternatives, making it especially suitable for use in resource-limited settings where tuberculosis is becoming more rampant, partly through the world-wide advance of HIV. David Moore and his colleagues have published results in the New England Journal of Medicine of a massive investigation conducted in Lima with nearly 4 000 samples of the sputum test called: Microscopic-Observation Drug-Susceptibility (MODS) Assay. Their findings promise not only to improve diagnosis and save lives in developing countries and other settings with limited health-care resources, but also out-perform costly gold-standard technology-intensive TB diagnosis methods currently used where cash is not a problem. The MODS test, David Moore told Peter Goodwin during a visit to Peru, gives sensitive and specific diagnosis in as little as seven days, and concurrently yields drug susceptibility data which helps combat multi-drug resistant TB.
