Ep 28: America 2023: Four Perspectives

Ep 28: America 2023: Four Perspectives

My 2023 Fourth of July episode! America's 247th birthday. So, how are we doing?

I decided to get some different perspectives on the topic, and since I wasn't able to get to Philadelphia, PA. where the Declaration of Independence was ratified and signed on July 4th, 1776, I went to the next best place...San Diego, CA!

Why? Well, first, it's a very patriotic town. I mean, the west coast home of the U.S. Marines, Camp Pendelton, is just up the road. The U.S. Navy's Pacific Fleet has a huge operation there, not to mention the Naval Air Station on Coronado Island in San Diego Bay. "Top Gun: Maverick" was both set and filmed there.

San Diego has a high level of academic institutions including, UCSD, USD, and the Scripps Research Center, and it's a very diverse place with Mexico's border only a few miles to the south, and the influx of people from all over the world because of the industries related to the Armed Forces based there.

I spoke with four people: A Puerto Rican ER doc; a former Navy radar tech who now works for a defense contractor; an Afro-Latina woman whose grandfather fled an island dictatorship for a chance at real freedom in America; and a gay man from east Texas who is planning a wedding with his partner. Listen and find out what they think.

Infrastructure Negotiations In Congress; Is America Able to Unite?

Infrastructure Negotiations In Congress; Is America Able to Unite?

The guest host for today's show is Brad Bannon. Brad runs Bannon Communications Research, a polling, message development and media firm which helps labor unions, progressive issue groups and Democratic candidates win public affairs and political campaigns. His show, 'Deadline D.C. with Brad Bannon,' airs every Monday from 3-4pm ET.

Brad is first joined by Shawn Zeller, Deputy Editor of CQ Magazine, and host of the 'CQ on Congress' podcast. Shawn's Twitter handle is @ShawnZeller.

Brad and Shawn discuss the current status of infrastructure negotiations in Congress. This includes the bipartisan agreement reached last week in the Senate, as well as the more progressive proposal that looks to be heading towards the budget reconciliation process. They also talk about the congressional prospects for police reform and the 'For the People Act.'

During the second half of the show, Brad leads a political round-table with Tara Devlin and Mark Grimaldi. The roundtable analyzes whether the 81 million Americans who voted for Joe Biden can coexist with the 73 million Americans who voted for Donald Trump.
With Independence Day this Sunday, they also discuss what it means to be an American patriot, and why some Conservatives put on displays of 'phony patriotism.'

Tara Devlin is a New York City based comedian, writer, and host of the unapologetically-liberal podcast "TARABUSTER.”
    Tarabuster is 5-star viewer-reviewed and 100% viewer-supported.

Mark Grimaldi has been a progressive political activist for the past 12 years. He volunteered for the campaigns of President Obama (2008 and 2012), Senator Bernie Sanders (2016), Secretary Hillary Clinton (2016), and President Joe Biden (2020). Mark is also involved in campaign finance reform efforts around the country, and philanthropic efforts for Cancer research. His Twitter handle is @MarkJGrimaldi.

Brad is on the National Journal's panel of political insiders and is a national political analyst for WGN TV and Radio in Chicago and KNX Radio in Los Angeles.

Ep. 14 - The Declaration of Independence... More Relevant Than Ever

Ep. 14 - The Declaration of Independence... More Relevant Than Ever

As we celebrate Independence Day and look at the state of affairs in our country, we may struggle to see much of a reason to celebrate. Certainly, we don’t appear to have realized the self-evident truths that the Declaration of Independence refers to. Taking a read of it will help to bring us back to the reasons for the founding of our country. And in that light, the Declaration is more relevant than ever. As we read it, we can see more than one parallel to the events going on around us today.

The best way to celebrate our country this year, in my opinion, is to read the Declaration and the Constitution and to reach out to family, friends, and neighbors who may have a different perspective and talk with them to understand one another… and then activate within your community by becoming an informed voter and stepping up to serve yourself or to seek out people to support who are willing to.
