Summer Movie Season: June 2023 - Part 4

Previously on the Special Topics in Media Pod-a-Thon!: franchise fatigue, IP gone awry, brand dominance in colossal collapse. Garret Castleberry cracks the rhetorical whip with Summer Movie scholar Kyle Hammonds as they tackle the close-out films that helped make June 2023 one of the most commercially promising, yet financially flailing months in recent history. The dark room duo initiate discourse with a split appreciation for Wes Anderson's promising Americana revery, Asteroid City. Then, Garret and Kyle tackle one of summer's most expensive movies and bankable characters in film history, Harrison Ford's final portray of Henry Jones Jr. in Disney's Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Our film scholars back both features but seemingly vary from popular consensus. What gives in this mismatched equation? Perhaps the July slate will hold resolutions to the burning questions posed in this month of June capper to the 2023 Summer Movie Season

Peter Dinklage’s janitor-turned-superhero film to be screened at Fantastic Fest

Peter Dinklage’s janitor-turned-superhero film to be screened at Fantastic Fest
Peter Dinklage fans have sufficient reason to rejoice! Legendary Pictures has just unleashed a tantalizing sneak peek of The Toxic Avenger, an electrifying remake of the cult 1984 classic. Dinklage is diving headfirst into the lead role as Winston Gooze. He’s not your average janitor; he's a brooding, melancholic soul toiling away at a health club. The twist? A terminal illness sets him on a wild mission to pilfer from his employer, but fate plays a wicked hand, dunking him into a toxic vat of ooze. Voila! Gooze emerges from the goo, a hideously heroic monster known as the Toxic Avenger. In the recently-released first look of the movie, Dinklage brandishes a luminescent green mop – a weapon that’s both intriguing and undoubtedly hazardous. The shadowy preview tantalizes us, keeping the enigmatic Gooze shrouded in mystery. Joining Dinklage on this electrifying journey is a star-studded cast: the talented Jacob Tremblay steps in as Gooze's son, and the lineup boasts heavyweights like Kevin Bacon, Julia Davis, Taylour Paige, Sarah Niles, Julian Kostov, Elijah Wood, Jane Levy, and Macon Blair. Tune in for more.

Prometheus, Asteroid City, & Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

Prometheus, Asteroid City, & Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

In this week’s episode of the AIPT Movies podcast, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss Ridley Scott’s prequel to his own 1979 masterpiece, Alien, the somewhat controversial sci-fi horror film, Prometheus!

A fantastic and hauntingly hopeful musical score! A stacked cast that includes Michael Fassbender in one of his greatest roles! Incredible production design and cinematography! A horrific self-surgery scene for the ages! A surprisingly timely warning about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence! A movie that may have been viewed as a modern classic if not for the baggage of a connected franchise! Is this yet another example of the folly of de-mystifying the enjoyably mysterious? Is the exploration of humanity’s hubris, and insatiable desire for more, perfectly told through a technically unnecessary prequel? Listen now to find out!

In addition, Matt and Alex share their spoiler-free thoughts on Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny!

You can find AIPT Movies on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. As always, if you enjoy the podcast, be sure to leave us a positive rating, subscribe to the show, and tell your friends!

The AIPT Movies podcast brings you the latest in movie news, reviews, and more! Hosted by supposed “industry vets,” Alex Harris, Tim Gardiner, and Matt Paul, the show gives you a peek behind the scenes from three filmmakers with oddly nonexistent filmographies. You can find Alex on Instagram and Twitter @ActionHarris. Matt is a terrific artist that you can find on Instagram @no_wheres_ville. Tim can’t be found on social media because he doesn’t exist. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

The Indiana Jones franchise might be out of time, but maybe that's why the fifth and final entry, Dial of Destiny, is about time! And it's about time we review it. Harrison Ford returns, naturally, as the titular adventurer, now in his golden years as the series enters 1969. But you know who doesn't return? Steven Spielberg! Or George Lucas. Since its premiere at Cannes, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny has certainly divided critics and longtime fans alike. But we'll do our best to excavate our own thoughts on a movie that may or may not belong in a museum.

Dial of Destiny was directed by James Mangold, who co-wrote it with Jez Butterworth, John-Henry Butterworth, and David Koepp. In addition to Ford, the cast includes Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Antonio Banderas, Toby Jones, Boyd Holbrook, Ethann Isidore, John Rhys-Davies, Karen Allen, and Mads Mikkelsen. The film opened nationwide on June 30 through Disney and Lucasfilm and has a 154-minute runtime.

Our intro music this week is “Gato” by TyLuv. & Strehlow.
