Just over a quarter of university graduates in the UK have studied a STEM course, and in the US it’s less than 1-in-5.  Within that, there is still a huge disparity in gender after secondary school compulsory education.

Best of 2023 Interviews Part 2 (Doug DeMuro, Lynn Calder)

De zomer zit er weer op! 
Na enkele zonnige dagen, karig verspreid over 2 maanden, zit onze Belgisch/Nederlandse zomer er weer op en daarbij ook de zomerstop van jullie podcast hosts. Toegegeven, dit jaar hadden we onze vakanties wel extreem slecht gepland waardoor die allemaal ná elkaar vielen.
Gelukkig lieten onder andere Mathieu VDP & Rempo het niet aan hun hart komen en werden beide overtuigend wereldkampioen. De voorbeschouwing voor de ReNeWi Tour lieten we dan maar vallen - iets wat de parcoursbouwer duidelijk zelf ook had gedaan.
En kijk, zo zijn we aanbeland bij de laatste grote Vuelta van dit seizoen! Deze belooft nog meer de moeite te worden dan anders, want wat een deelnemersveld! Qua klimmers en klassementsmannen welteverstaan. Naar sprinters blijft het zoeken met een vergrootglas, Spanjaarden hebben nu eenmaal een broertje dood aan sprintaankomsten als er geen stieren bij betrokken zijn.
Remco tegen de rest? Of het Jumbo blok voor het record? Een Iberische tandem uit de woestijn of weer een typische doorbraak? Spanje serveert z'n tapa's in overvloed, net als het aantal klimaankomsten.

Daar zijn we weer beste wielerliefhebbers! Na de overdaad van matige analysis in andere podcasts over wielrennen is hier de laatste aflevering van jullie onmisbare toogpraat voor de 110de Tour de France.
Veel inkt is al gevloeid over de aankomende verwachte tweestrijd, jammer genoeg geen tripartite met een Belgisch tintje dit jaar. Maar niet getreurd - genoeg om over door te praten, te analyseren, te wikken en te wegen!
Wie gaat er nog scoren? Hoe kijken wij naar het parcours en wie krijgt er een passend afscheid, of net niet? De grootste wielerwedstrijd van het jaar staat weer voor de deur, de tenoren en de fans zijn er klaar voor.
Hier is jullie laatste aflevering van Café Koers, veel plezier ermee!

Daar zijn we weer met een nieuwe episode, na een break van enkele weken. 
Waar we altijd lyrisch waren over de heerlijk onvoorspelbare Giro, moeten we nu toegeven dat het toch een beetje een sof was. Zo erg, dat we halverwege beslisten om onze geplande Café Koers aflevering uit te stellen.
Niels was er zó door in de war dat hij de nieuwe datum prompt vergat. Gelukkig hebben we een primeur voor Café Koers: een gast aan onze virtuele toog!
Ondanks de regen, Covid en een uitvallende wereldkampioen blijft er nog genoeg om over bij te praten. Want we zouden de geweldige winnaar (en runner-up) absoluut onrecht aandoen om hun prestaties niet te belichten, net als enkele andere opvallende sujets.
We kijken ook al eens vooruit naar de Dauphiné, Ronde van Zwitserland en het BK. Afsluiten doen we zoals altijd met een rondje (slechte) voorspellingen.

Het voorjaar is gedaan, de lente hangt nu eindelijk in de lucht en alle conclusies zijn getrokken. Maar niet getreurd, de leukste der Grote Rondes staat weer voor de deur! Net als andere jaren heeft de Giro d'Italia weer verschillende absurde elementen voor de wielerliefhebber in petto. De liefhebber dan toch, want menig renner zal eens stevig gevloekt hebben toen ze het road plan bekeken.
Een klimtijdrit op het einde die zó heftig is, dat ze het logistiek niet eens georganiseerd krijgen... Only in the Giro!
We kijken vol goesting vooruit naar de eerste Ronde van het jaar, met natuurlijk onze eigenste wereldkampioen en LBL koning aan de start. Hoe goed is Remco, en z'n ploeg, en krijgen we het verwachte duel tegen de geelhemden aangevoerd door Roglic? Of toch maar die derde hond?

De Heilige Vlaamse week & de snelste Parijs-Roubaix ooit liggen weer achter ons. Enorm hoge verwachtingen bij sommige  hoofdrolspelers, bij sommigen ingevuld, bij anderen dan weer niet. Maar wat geeft het, want niks moet en uiteindelijk zijn wij als toeschouwers de echte grote winnaars geworden!
Liefst elk jaar meer van dat.
We blikken, noblesse oblige, uitgebreid terug op de 2 mooiste klassiekers van het jaar (voor discussie vatbaar) en richten onze blik op de laatse weken van het klassieke voorjaar. Een nieuw blik renners worden opengetrokken, voor sommige teams begint de tijd om te scoren nu toch wel echt te dringen. Want een paar weken geleden hadden we het nog over voorbarige conclusies, binnen een goede 10 dagen zijn het definitieve conclusies. En waar winnaars zijn, zijn er ook verliezers.

Daar is hij dan, de ultieme voorbeschouwing op De Ronde en het onvervalste Café Koers overzicht in het midden van de Heilige Vlaamse week! Snedige analysises, boude voorspellingen en meer van dat alles. Zoals altijd gepaard met een (Vlaams) biertje mét verhaal. 
Gent-Wevelgem gaan we even, deels toch, uit de weg: na een hele week vol onvervalste complottheorieën en een onderwerp waarin weer bleek hoe belangrijk analysten zichzelf vooral vinden, doen wij waar we best in zijn. Voorbarige conclusies, grappige anektodes en vooral veel positiviteit en toogpraat. Een dark horse voor de aankomende Ronde kan je hier wel op de kop tikken!

Oh, en hoewel het soms zo niet lijkt, wordt onze podcast steeds opgenomen vóór het verschijnen van verschillende artikels in andere online en geschreven pers. Hallo Sporza, hire us?

Het voorjaar draait op volle toeren, de eerste renners beginnen al onrustig op hun zadel heen en weer te schuifelen. Om van de ploegleiders in de volgauto nog maar te zwijgen. Wie is er toch slechter dan verwacht uit de winter gekomen, of voor wie breekt de lente net helemaal door?
Waar we de vorige keer nog een mooi rondje voorbarige conclusies konden doen, worden sommige van deze conclusies toch al wat meer waarheid. Nu ja, buiten al die keren waar we er naar goede gewoonte naast zitten.
Aflevering 3 al weer van Café Koers met zoals altijd een uurtje vol half-serieuze analyses en terugblikken gevolgd door nog minder serieuze voorspellingen en vooruitblikken. Kortom, jullie favoriete toogpraat over alles van het hedendaagse wielrennen. Mochten ook niet ontbreken: een korte deep dive over een Belg en enkele bieren-met-verhaal.

Het Vlaamse voorjaar is gestart, de eerste 3 mooie koersen liggen al weer achter ons (jaja, we rekenen Le Samyn ook mee). Hoog tijd dus voor een ronde absoluut voorbarige conclusies. Want hoewel een wijs man ooit zei dat de rekening pas na Luik wordt gemaakt, zou het té jammer zijn om nu al niet zeer uitgebreid in te gaan op de voorbije week.
We kijken naar goede gewoonte ook niet enkel in onze achteruitkijkspiegel (zo win je immers geen wielermanagers) maar kijken ook al met ongeduld vooruit! Het wordt immers verder smullen geblazen met enkele Italiaanse kleinere en vooral grotere koersen. Voorzichtig als we zijn gaan we het debat of de Strade nu het 6de moment is even uit de weg, we krijgen al voldoende bedreigingen over de matige inhoud van onze podcast.
Oh, en natuurlijk doen we weer een rondje voorspellingen. Spoiler alert, kans is groot dat we er weer met z'n allen galant naast zitten.

Het wielerjaar zit er weer zo goed als op, en wat een grand cru was het voor ons wielergek Belgenlandje! De voorbije weken kregen we na jaren droogte zowel een winnaar van een grote ronde als een nieuwe Belgische wereldkampioen. Nog gekker, het was gewoon dezelfde Remco Evenepoel die beide wist te realiseren.
Zelfs Thomas zette zijn anders lauwe enthousiasme voor R.EV opzij en haalde de loftrompet boven. We nemen dus voldoende de tijd om even terug te kijken op die afgelopen top weken wielrennen.
Einde van het wielerseizoen betekent natuurlijk ook het einde van ons tweede podcast seizoen want neen, we gaan niet door met veldrijden. Veldrijden is een geweldige sport om live mee te maken met fris gerstennat, maar volgens ons niet geschikt om een boeiende podcast over te maken.
Een laatste terugblik dus voor onze winterslaap, dit alles in de laatste Café Koers!

W-a-t een geweldige Tour hebben we gehad dit jaar! Schitterend weer lokte weer hopen fans, aanvallende en nieuwe koerstactieken, onvoorspelbare plotwendingen en een Belg die er met kop en schouders bovenuit stak. Maar, over dit alles gaan we het in deze podcast niet hebben.
De Tour ligt al eventjes achter ons dus richten we onze blik zoals vanouds op wat komt, en wat de actualiteit allemaal brengt.
En met actualiteit bedoelen we deze keer niet alle obscure koersen die wij als fanaten allemaal volgen, maar wel de verschillende transfers van rennners. Want dat is augustus: transfermaand!
Natuurlijk spenderen we ook voldoende tijd aan een mooie analyse van de 3rde grote ronde, de minst belichte van de 3: La Vuelta! Een open en mooi deelnemersveld, een Belgische kopman voor het klassement en  een parcours om U tegen te zeggen.
Je hoort het allemaal in de nieuwste Café Koers.

We zijn midden van de Tour, net na de geweldige passage in de Franse Alpen: geen beter moment om een tussenstand op te maken!
Hoewel de Tour zonder twijfel het grootste meerdaagse wielerfestijn van het jaar is, waren wij in het verleden af en toe toch best koele minnaars: vaak te voorspelbaar en beperkte spankracht.
Gelukkig niets van dat alles dit jaar: de gensters vliegen er vanaf! Zowel in de sprints, de tussenetappes als in de bergen stond het al bol van de spanning en onverwachte plotwendingen.
