    How the Kubernetes Gateway API Beats Network Ingress

    How the Kubernetes Gateway API Beats Network Ingress

    In this New Stack Makers podcast, Mike Stefaniak, senior product manager at NGINX and Kate Osborn, a software engineer at NGINX discusses challenges associated with network ingress in Kubernetes clusters and introduces the Kubernetes Gateway API as a solution. Stefaniak highlights the issues that arise when multiple teams work on the same ingress, leading to friction and incidents. NGINX has also introduced the NGINX Gateway Fabric, implementing the Kubernetes Gateway API as an alternative to network ingress.

    The Kubernetes Gateway API, proposed four years ago and recently made generally available, offers advantages such as extensibility. It allows referencing policies with custom resource definitions for better validation, avoiding the need for annotations. Each resource has an associated role, enabling clean application of role-based access control policies for enhanced security.

    While network ingress is prevalent and mature, the Kubernetes Gateway API is expected to find adoption in greenfield projects initially. It has the potential to unite North-South and East-West traffic, offering a role-oriented API for comprehensive control over cluster traffic. The article encourages exploring the Kubernetes Gateway API and engaging with the community to contribute to its development.

    'Twas the Night Before Show Day

    'Twas the Night Before Show Day

    STORY EPISODE – Joyous holiday season Venuelanders! As we prepare for an exciting 2024 with some incredible guests and bonus episodes, please enjoy this special holiday treat. Here is our version of that classic, fire-side story which will hopefully warm your heart – ‘Twas the Night Before Show Day. 📖💗 We hope you’ll share this short story with coworkers and fellow live event friends, and that you have a peaceful, happy holiday season however you celebrate. See you in 2024!

    ––––––

    'Twas the night before show day, throughout back of house,
    Not a crew member stirred, not even a mouse;
    Road boxes were packed into semi trucks with care,
    In hopes that by load-in they would surely be there.

    The GM was nestled all snug in their bed,
    While visions of show profits danced in their head;
    Marketing, ticketing, security and more,
    Dreamed of patrons smoothly going through doors.

    This holiday show – an iconic one of a kind,
    Combined Mariah, TSO, Rockettes, and Mannheim;
    Promoters all wanted this last-second show,
    All venues were in awe, for that you must know.

    As staff arrived and prepared for the night,
    A snafu was discovered, the details weren’t right;
    Part time support staff never got the call,
    This last-minute booking may not happen at all.

    Word went out that this show needs support,
    If no help arrives, they'll have to abort;
    As the staff hung their heads, joined the fans and cried,
    A door opened with reinforcements from far and wide.

    They exclaimed, "It’s AEG! OVG! Live Nation and Legends!
    There's Kroenke, MSG, NS2 – good heavens!
    We need all your help, give it your touch.
    Let's make this show happen, thank you so much!"

    The crew all jumped in, staffing entries and parking,
    People unloaded trucks, got chalk and began marking;
    Ticketmaster, AXS, eTix, and more,
    All teamed up to get people through the door.

    With everyone in their seats and anticipation high,
    The lights went down with not a dry eye;
    The crowd began to roar, giving everyone a hand,
    Always a favorite moment for those in Venueland.

    Mannheim Steamroller was first on this bill,
    They brought out the classics and had no chill;
    Putting their heart into every last song,
    Synthesizers, drums, and even a gong!

    Next up was the Radio City Music Hall squad,
    Performing numbers as the crowd ooo-ed and awed;
    Their eyes – how they twinkled! Their show so razzling!
    Their legs kicking sky high, the Rockettes were dazzling!

    And with a blast of pyro Trans-Siberian Orchestra took the stage,
    Guitars shedding, lasers beaming, a show for every age;
    Holiday classics with rockstar flair,
    As musicians and singers swung through the air.

    Mariah closed it out, and sang loud and true,
    That all she wanted for Christmas, was you-ooo-ooo-ooo-ooooo!
    And just as she finished her final note,
    She invited staff and crew on stage and cleared her throat.

    “Normally these companies compete for nickels and dimes,
    But today, this special night, they put it all aside.
    They understood how important this holiday show was.
    And despite who landed it, it had to happen because,

    No matter who performs, what venue, or profit split,
    Making memories for fans is the reason we do it.”
    They joined the performers, and sang through the mic,
    HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD-NIGHT!

    #106 - Batalha de ingresses: Nginx VS HAProxy

    Passada a Maratona KubeCon NA 2022, voltamos à programação normal do Kubicast, trazendo ao microfone dois grandes gênios do Open Source: o querido Ricardo Katz e o mais novo conhecido João Morais.

     A presença deles aqui é para a gente fazer um embate entre Nginx vs HAProxy, e essa batalha não é qualquer uma, porque eles trabalham diretamente na fonte do código desses ingresses.

     Então, qual deles é melhor? Quando não usar o Nginx? Qual foi a motivação para criar o HAProxy? E mais: como é a vida de um mantenedor de projeto Open Source?

     Os LINKS de assuntos comentados:

    60 The "Baywatch" of Video Games (w/ Dan Lingen, Game Creator Community Dir. @ Xbox)

    Destructoid alum Dan "Husky" Lingen joins us this week to go deep on media theory, the evolution of Internet communities, and of course...video games! He recently joined Xbox as the Game Creator Community Director, where he works with developers to empower their online fans. He's also worked at EA, Twitch, and Ubisoft, and explains how covering video games in the mid-2000s positioned him to realize the dream of joining the games industry.

    We reminisce about a less crowded Internet, why the Web is more inclusive today but harder to break through, and our hope that the future has more small communities and less news feeds.

    Also, Colette reveals the title of her forthcoming book (!!!), which has nothing to do with Baywatch unfortunately.

This week's leading stories include Istio heading to the CNCF,  an incredible study by arXiv on ML backdoors, and two (seemingly) never-ending stories: the Log4Shell vulnerability & the Elon vs. Twitter saga.

    This weeks topics include:

    • Intro & Agenda
    • Google to donate open source project Istio to the CNCF
    • Netlify adds content creation tool AT THE EDGE
    • Release of Node.js v18
    • Esperanto's RISC-V AI Chip tested by Samsung & others
    • Yet another chapter in the never-ending Elon vs. Twitter saga
    • And more on the Log4Shell vulnerability
    • arXiv study on machine learning backdoor techniques
    • As promised, a double-dose of Whack-a-Doodle

    As mentioned by Eric, this (RCN #49) will be the final episode of Radio Cloud Native (in it's current format).

    Please keep the podcast in your feed and keep an eye out for fresh content. Sometime early in this new year, the team at Mirantis is planning to revamp Radio Cloud Native (possibly under a new name, but accessible from this same RSS feed).

    Thank you to all of our listeners that kept Radio Cloud Native going over the past two-or-so years. And a special thanks as well as good luck to long-time host Eric Gregory as he pursues future endeavors outside of Mirantis. Stay tuned for more podcasts from Mirantis in 2024!

    ADAM ORTIZ

    ADAM ORTIZ

      Adam Ortiz is a lot of things, including but not limited to: DJ, business ninja, chef, gamer, and friend. An integral part of the now-infamous pool party from episode 126, Adam and Kirk have made fast friends and are thus as thick and thieves. Alliteration aside, this hombre has his hands in hella hobbies. An obsessive computer nerd at heart, Adam's unique DNA has led him into high-level mastery in a number of things: music, business, food, and gaming. If you're into Hot 'n' Now, electronic music, truck soap, foot fetishes, Dave on FXX, Japanese culture, Dance Dance Revolution, Ingress, trippy visuals, and essentially anything else, then this is the episode for you!

      Music contributions from HILTON (theme), the host himself (you'll know which ones), and some jams licensed through Soundstripe.

      DJ Adam Ortiz on Soundcloud and Twitch.

    Kubernetes Networking

    Kubernetes Networking

    Show: 29

    Show Overview: Brian and Tyler talk with Marc Curry (@redhatmarc, OpenShift Principal Product Manager, Container Infrastructure) about the basics of Kubernetes networking, CNI plugins, managing Network Policy, granular ingress and egress routing, and how CaaS/PaaS and IaaS are being integrated.

    Show News:

    Show Notes:

    Topic 1 - Welcome to the show. Tell us about your background and some of the areas you focus on now?

    Topic 2 - Let’s talk about the basics of Kubernetes networking. Walk us through the core elements from container addressing, pod/cluster networking, and things like ingress/egress routing (direct or through proxies).

    Topic 3 - Kubernetes has a standard called “CNI” (Container Networking Interface). What does this do, and how does it interact with various SDN projects/products?

    Topic 4 - A recent enhancement to Kubernetes was “Network Policy”. What does this provide, and where does it overlap with some commercial SDN capabilities?

    Topic 5 - Let’s talk about inbound and outbound routing of traffic. What are some of the biggest issues that people need to take into consideration (proxies, traffic sources, protocols supported, etc.)?

    Topic 6 - What are some of the things you’re working on to bridge the networking between CaaS/PaaS layers and IaaS layers?
