Movie "Insurgent" - Commentary by David Hoffmeister - Weekly Online Movie Workshop
We don't wake up through rebellion, you know, we tried. We tried other ways as well and they didn't work either. And now we're about forgiveness, release the world, release the thoughts of time, release the thoughts of space, release the judgments, release grievances. Oh, it sounds so pretty. It is actually pretty. Because it works, it actually works. So that's why we're on this journey of release. We're willing to release the self-concept of what we believe we were. The roles we played, the concepts we held. We are willing to release all of it in order to find peace of mind. We are willing to empty our mind of everything we think we think and think we know and come with wholly empty hands unto your God.

39. Insurgent Empire
Priyamvada Gopal talks to Salil Tripathi about her latest book, Insurgent Empire: How rebellious slave colonies changed British attitudes to Empire (2019). Insurgent Empire shows how Britain’s enslaved and colonial subjects were active agents in their own liberation. What is more, they shaped British ideas of freedom and emancipation back in the United Kingdom.
Priyamvada Gopal is a Professor in the Faculty of English at the University of Cambridge, where she is a Fellow of Churchill College. Her main teaching and research interests are in colonial and postcolonial literature and theory, gender and feminism, Marxism and critical race studies.
Salil Tripathi is a Bombay-born writer based in New York. He is the author of several books, and his next book is about the Gujaratis. He chairs PEN International’s Writers in Prison Committee. Salil has been a correspondent in India, Singapore, and Hong Kong, and worked at human rights organisations in London. His journalism has won awards in India and abroad. He writes for Mint and Caravan.

At the Movies: Insurgent
The Hurt Locker
Addict yourself to war and to the Next 137 Project by defusing bombs in Baghdad and by listening to us talk about that dicey topic. The huge Oscar success of 10 years ago might be the best picture ever made about the Iraq War and it even upset the mega-hit Avatar at the Academy Awards, so there's that. The movie has also lost some zing in the past decade. One Ellis has antipathy to it and especially towards cocky Jeremy Renner while the other Ellis just doesn't enjoy the film's thrills the same way a decade later. We also discuss Kathryn Bigelow's career as a female director, but of mostly macho flicks. It's a complicated 'cast.

"Awakening from the Dream" Online RetreatââInsurgentâ Movie Session
For the movie session on Day 2 of the âAwakening from the Dreamâ online retreat with Portuguese Translation, David shows the movie âInsurgent" which is the second movie in The Divergent Series. The lead character in this movie, Tris, is faced with removing all blocks in the mind to transcend all fear, limitations, guilt and any sense of worthlessness.
The path of awakening involves letting go of limiting self-concepts, accepting the mighty companions who desire to join in shared purpose, and intensive mind-training. Once the mind is clear and focused, deeper realms of healing can be approached, including facing the unconscious guilt in the mind, the death-wish, and the fear of love.
For a deep experience of healing, we recommend renting the movie and watching it after youâve listened to this talk! For this and more movies David has used for awakening, visit our online âMovie Watchers Guide to Enlightenmentâ at https://mwge.org.
Recorded January 27, 2018 at the Living Miracles Metaphysical Center in Kamas, Utah.

Green Inferno
Episode 8, in which we indulge in at least ten ad hominem attacks on Eli Roth, because he deserves it. Green Inferno is a terrible, pointless bullshit movie and Eli Roth is a dickhead fratboy. No surprises there, I guess....

The Haters v Mad Max Trilogy
Ben keeps his promise from episode one to watch and hate the first three Max Mad films. These films start out almost fun, and then become overwrought and shitty and then become fun again, but in a banal Steven Speilberg kind of way....

The Haters v Inside Out
Welcome to Episode Five, in which a different cast of Haters drop more references to beloved children's movies than obscure philosophers, but only barely. Also, gender and scientific reductionism compete for what enrages us most, and people get real deep about their feelings....
