❓ Do you ever find yourself wanting to become a more empathetic communicator?
❓ Are you looking to enhance your effectiveness in intercultural communication?
❓ Do you want to learn how to avoid common pitfalls when connecting with others?

🎉 Welcome to our new series, 'Grow with Zip,' where we dive into the insightful conversations Zip Nguyen has with students and young professionals 🎉

✍️ In Zip's own words: "As someone who's constantly seeking growth and improvement, I see myself as constantly evolving on my journey rather than having reached a destination. And as I continue to learn and grow, I simply want to offer my perspective and share what I've discovered with others... who knows, perhaps someone else may benefit from it, too 👩🏻‍🏫"

🌟 Special thanks to professor Kate Shea Kennon, Ed.D and all the students in her Business Communication class at Fordham University and Fordham Gabelli School of Business who joined the meeting ❤️

Bloom in Crisis is the embodiment of hope — it is a belief, a practice, a state of being that empowers you to skillfully regulate emotions, build spiritual resilience, enhance self-awareness, unleash the potential of your mind, foster a grateful heart, cultivate joy, nurture positive energy, promote inner peace, grow self-compassion and compassion for others, embrace the present moment, derive wisdom from introspection, transform pain into grace, recognize positive possibilities even in adversity, and actively shape your narrative, ultimately leading to a happy and fulfilled life (with a touch of style!)

Welp... you're probably not going to remember all of these, and neither am I (!) which is why internalizing the concept of "bloom in crisis" instead of trying to memorize what it means is important. Luckily, we can all do it by practicing consistently.

While I'm incredibly grateful for my journey, I know firsthand how painful and lonely it is to go through tough times alone — it urges me to give back and help others as much as I can in my lifetime. Bloom in Crisis has been transforming me and many others for the better, and I would love for you to give it a try!

Believing that everyone is a bloomer and we #bloomincrisis together, I founded Bloom in Crisis to share with you how I practice it and what I've learned throughout my journey, which, I hope, will be helpful for you in yours.

Choose: Meta Communication or Cross Cultural Conflict? #140

Choose: Meta Communication or Cross Cultural Conflict? #140
Choose: Meta Communication orCross Cultural Conflict? Meta communication is communicating on how you want to communicate. What that means is “meta” is like that bird's eye perspective. Usually we just launch into communicating without establishing communication ground rules or best practices. Sounds simple but many conflicts would be avoided if more time and attention was paid to meta communication. Ignore meta communication at your own risk!

    Culture Shock with Andrea Heiliger

    Culture Shock with Andrea Heiliger

My guest on this week's podcast is Andrea Heiliger. There are plenty of adjectives to describe Andrea - artistic, caring, spunky, brave, witty, smiley, dedicated, and adventurous are a few that come to mind. If you're ever having a bad day, she's the person you want to call because she makes everyone feel welcome when you're in her presence.

Andrea was born and raised in Nebraska but isn't quite sure where she caught the exploration bug. It may have started with her artistic talent combined with technical drawings that took her to archeological digs in Israel. Traveling is one of her passions and she definitely knows how to go with the flow no matter the circumstances. Most people try and make lemonade with lemons but Andrea would probably make an art project or a dessert...the options are endless with her imagination! It's this ability to adapt and be flexible that created opportunities in Turkey to observe and learn about the culture around her.

Andrea and her husband lived in Turkey. She and Janese chat about the highs and lows of culture shock overseas, how everyone experiences humbleness through it, and how to differentiate between cultures and personalities.

    Culture Shock with Mehmet Casey

    Culture Shock with Mehmet Casey

My guest on this week's podcast is Mehmet Casey. Mehmet (Mo) was born and raised in Baghdad, Iraq where like many others, he navigated a stressful lifestyle. After college and a brief employment, he decided to step out of the scene to pursue more professional opportunities and gain a global perspective. He landed what was supposed to be a 10-month long exchange teaching Fulbright scholarship but later events at home left him no choice but to seek asylum, which ultimately made Billings, MT his new home.

Defeating Hate with Two-Time Emmy Award Winning Muslim Filmmaker Deeyah Khan

Defeating Hate with Two-Time Emmy Award Winning Muslim Filmmaker Deeyah Khan

“The whole purpose of making the film for me was I wanted to try and see if I can understand them, and I want to see if they’re able to understand me…I know I’m not going to change my views and I know he’s not going to change his, but can we at least get to a point where…can I recognize their humanity? And in doing so, can they recognize mine?” -Deeyah Khan, Award-Winning Documentary Film Director

Deeyah Khan is an Emmy and Peabody award-winning documentary film director, and founder of Fuuse, a media and arts company that puts women, people from minorities, and third-culture kids at the heart of telling their own stories. Deeyah is working to create intercultural dialogue and understanding by confronting the world's most complex and controversial topics.

Her 2012 multi-award winning documentary, Banaz: A Love Story, chronicles the life and death of Banaz Mahmod, a young British Kurdish woman murdered by her family in a so-called honor killing. Khan's second film, the Grierson and Bafta award-nominated Jihad, involved two years of interviews and filming with Islamic extremists, convicted terrorists and former jihadis. Her most recent documentary White Right: Meeting the Enemy, where she spends months getting to know neo-nazis, is currently streaming on Netflix. Her 2016 TED talk has over a million views.

In the process of making these documentaries and throughout her life as a brown woman, Deeyah has been spit on, held at gun point, and received countless rape and death threats. Yet she still walked away from these films with optimism and hope for humanity. In this interview of Stories of Transformation, we get to understand why that is.

A few highlights of our conversation are:
-Why some people respond to injustice with violence while others, like Deeyah, respond with picking up a camera
-How Deeyah ended up in a crappy Chinese buffet in NYC right after receiving an Emmy for her first ever film Banaz
-What powerful insights Deeyah learned through spending months interviewing Neo-Nazis, Jihads, and other extremists
-How Deeyah overcame her fear when face to face with her biggest enemies
-What happened when she joined some white supremacists at one of their rallies
-The number one thing she learned about how we should engage with those that have a completely different worldview than ourselves
-Who (or what), Deeyah learned, is actually our greatest enemy
