County Mayo is one of the best destinations in Ireland.

And it sees far less visitors than some of the other counties — which I think make it even better (fewer crowds!)

County Mayo has some charming villages with awesome pubs.

It has a national park — Wild Nephin & Ballycroy National Park — and a Dark Sky Park.

There are hills and peaks along with some peaty bogland.

The coastline is amazing with sandy beaches and sea cliffs.

And County Mayo has some incredible historical sites — from castles to the all important Céide Fields.

I love this county!

On 4th May 1799, the British forces defeated the famed king of Mysore in a battle, largely owing to the king's chief minister betraying him. About 8500 kms away, the battle finds a reference in a 200 ft talk Obleisk in Phoenix Park, in Dublin Ireland. In the summer of 2009, as the world was still reeling from the impact of The Great Recession, a young man, by the name of Kieran McGuinness, was trying to perfect a song. It was inspired by some grafitti he had seen in Spain. But the song had a purpose, for he was trying to find someone. Ask an Irish person about West Cork and they'll look at you with a dreamy look in their eyes.

West Cork has that affect on you.

This part of County Cork, Ireland is truly special.

Small harbor towns such as Baltimore and Schull dot the jagged coastline.

Sandy beaches like Inchy Doney and Barleycove pop up here and there.

Places like Mizen Head and Sheep's Head — 2 of the southwest peninsulas — provide stunning sea views.

Inland cows dot the green hills.

And stone circles remind us of the ancient people who once inhabited this area.

And did I mention that West Cork has some of the best food in Ireland?

If you only make it to Cork City or the popular harbor town of Kinsale then you are missing out on all that West Cork has to offer.

Because while County Cork is wonderful, West Cork is absolutely amazing!

These are the words I'd use to describe this amazing county in the far Northwestern part of Ireland.

The locals proclaim, "It's different up here!" And it is.

This is what makes this county so appealing to the adventurous traveler. You wont' be rubbing elbows with too many other travelers, but you will get to know the incredibly friendly and fiercely proud locals.

Want to lay your eyes upon some of the most stunning coastline in all of Ireland? Maybe you want to tour an incredible lakeside castle? Perhaps you want to walk on some gorgeous beaches? Or commune with the ancient spirits at a stone circle? How about some fun pub time?

County Donegal has all of this and more. But without the hoards of tourists.

While it may take a bit more effort to get here, once you do, you'll wonder why you didn't come here sooner!
