In Israel’s first election since the October 7 attacks by Hamas, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was not on the ballot. But Netanyahu’s party, Likud, did well, even as Israelis are out on the street protesting against him. What does this tell us about Israeli public opinion and the direction of the war ahead?

Israel's president has officially asked Likud party leader Benjamin Netanyahu to form a government. Netanyahu will rely on his traditional allies in the orthodox religious parties but also on a far-right parliamentary group called the Religious Zionists. And that's where it gets controversial because this party embraces ethnic nationalism and anti-Arab rhetoric.

In this episode of Adapting David Bryfman speaks with Noam Weissman of OpenDor Media, an experienced Israel educator and podcaster in his own right. They discuss how Jewish educators can use the upcoming Israeli elections as a teaching tool to further engage students with Israel and the complexities of Israeli society. SInce 1996, Israel has had elections more often than any democratic country in the world, according to a report by the Israel Democracy Institute. What is ti about the state of Israel that makes its government so unstable?

Almost two weeks after Israeli voters cast their ballots for a second time this year, it is still unclear which candidate will lead the country. To make sense of all this, The +972 Podcast turns to leading public opinion analyst Dahlia Scheindlin, who says not much has changed since the April elections. 

What’s different this time, however, is the growing debate over the separation of religion and state in Israel. This internal conflict “is not new, but it became a new arena of political competition in these elections,” explains Scheindlin. She posits that this extremely narrow view of liberalism could potentially grow into something bigger. 

“Ultimately, that will open people’s eyes to all the other related values of a liberal society,” she says. That shift could inspire a deeper discussion on civil and individual rights in Israel, and perhaps push many Israelis to rethink the consequences of endless occupation.
