Bittersweet Moment #197: Furbo vs. Fesso

They say that in Italy, you're either a furbo or a fesso—a wise guy or a chump. It's an unhappy reality that, in many situations in Italy, if you're not getting one over on someone else, someone is inevitably getting one over on you.

After Monday's debate over the possible unexpected benefits of Italian disorganization, Tiffany recalls a few times in her nearly two decades of living in Rome when she turned on the wily arts of furbizia to get her way, and to avoid being a fessa.

But that leads to a bigger question, does it have to be this way?

    Episode 458: Downsizing

    Episode 458: Downsizing

Do you feel the need to cull your belongings, either because you’re planning a big move, moving to a smaller space, or just feel you have too much stuff?

Downsizing is something that all would-be expats will eventually face—as well as anyone who yearns for a less cluttered and simpler life—so when we received a voice memo from long-time listener Mike on this very topic, we had a lot to say about it.

This week we discuss why it can be so freeing to get rid of unnecessary belongings, as well as why it can be so hard, especially when sentiment is involved. Example: how do you get rid of a trophy that you worked so hard to win?

Episode 456: Autumn This or That?

Autumn isn't everyone's favorite season... but it should be.

For no other reason than because we're in the middle of the best season of the year, today we put aside the "serious" topics to play a little game. This or That, autumn edition. Play along with us and hear us at our most unscripted and spontaneous, a state we usually reserve for bonus episodes.

Episode 455: Why Is the Media Obsessed with Italy? (with Coral Sisk)

Episode 455: Why Is the Media Obsessed with Italy? (with Coral Sisk)

Are you tired of watching every one you know go to Italy? The writer of a recent Eater article was, and she penned a viral complaint about it for the popular online foodie publication, with the specific complaint that the media turns too much of its focus on Italy—particularly when it comes to food programming—so tourists think it's the "only" place to go.

The comment section was wild, with most of the responses somewhere along the lines of "I love Italy and there's nothing wrong with that!"

Of course there isn't, but does the author of the controversial article have a point? Does the media contribute to an oversaturation of tourists in Italy when there is so much world out there to explore and eat your way through? And is this excessive tourism even beneficial to Italy and its tourism industry? And while we're at it, why is it that people come back to Italy again and again?

To try to find the answer, we sit down with Coral Sisk, food writer, food expert, and part-time Italy resident who had some very strong opinions about the article.

Follow Coral's culinary adventures on Instagram, or visit her website Curious Appetite to read her blog or book a Florence food tour.

Episode 454: Trying New Things, Opera Edition

When you decide to try something new, you might as well go all the way. That's what Katy was thinking when she bought opera tickets for the first time ever, and that the opera was by Wagner. Tiffany (who has a bit more experience with opera) was, understandably, concerned. Will Katy adore it? Will she detest it? Will Seattle Opera's new production of Tristan und Isolde turn Katy into an opera-lover? You'll have to listen to find out.

Hear reaction from before, during, and after Katy's opera adventure on this week's episode.

What new thing will you try this year?  Tell us about it here.

Bittersweet Moment #151: Rome's Birthday (Il Natale di Roma)

According to legend, the city of Rome was founded on 21 April 753 BC. That means today is Rome’s 2775th birthday! On this mini-episode, Tiffany tells a very brief version of the founding myth of ancient Rome, and explains some of the events that take place in the city on this day, from historical reenactments at the Circus Maximus to an amazing solar phenomenon at the Pantheon.
