The coronation is complete as South Dakota State are kings of the Football Championship Subdivision for the second year in a row. And the Montana Grizzlies are left to pick up the pieces after falling short in the national championship game yet again.

Montana head coach Bobby Hauck will coach the Griz in the FCS national title game for the fourth time in his career in the 8th appearance overall for UM. 

On Tuesday January 2, Hauck addressed the media before the first January practice in Griz football history (the last seven title games UM played in were played in December) as his team prepared to leave for Frisco, Texas to take on No. 1 South Dakota State, the defending national champions.

Montana State rolled in to the semifinals of the FCS Playoffs with a 55-7 win over William & Mary in the quarterfinals on December 9, 2022 in Bozeman, Montana. The semifinal appearance is the third in a row for the fourth-seeded Bobcats. 

MSU plays at No. 1 South Dakota State on Saturday afternoon in Brookings, South Dakota. Montana State second-year head coach Brent Vigen addressed the media on Monday.

On Tuesday December 6, 2022, Montana pounded South Dakota State, racing to an 81-56 victory in the lone December non-conference home game for the Grizzlies. Montana State went on the road and posted a 42-19 win over No. 1 and previously undefeated Sam Houston to advance to the semifinals of the FCS Playoffs for the second year in a row. 

The victory served as MSU's first true road win in the FCS playoffs. The loss was Sam Houston's first-ever home playoff defeat. 

MSU will host South Dakota State on Saturday at noon in Bozeman in the first FCS semifinal game in Montana since 2009 and the first at Bobcat Stadium since 1984. Monday, MSU head coach Brent Vigen addressed the media ahead of the Final Four matchup.
