„Ich philosophiere nur im Schrecken” schreibt Jacques Derrida „aber im eingestandenen Schrecken, wahnsinnig zu sein.” In dieser Folge untersuche ich Angst und Schrecken auf ihr Erkenntnispotential. Wenn Angst kein Objekt hat, wie Sigmund Freud uns lehrt, was offenbart sich dann in der Gewissheit der Angsterfahrung? Und wie verhält sich die Angst zum Schrecken? Ich beginne mit Angst als Methode in der ethnologischen Literatur, starre mit Maurice Blanchot und Jacques Lacan in das Auge einer Gottesanbeterin und versuche mich nicht (oder allenfalls leicht) an Jacques Derridas hyperbolischen Spitze des Zweifels zu stechen.

Immer wieder berichten KünstlerInnen davon, dass die Dinge zu ihnen sprechen – doch wer oder was spricht hier eigentlich? In dieser Folge nehme ich ein ästhetisches Ekelerlebnis zum Anlass, mir die Ereignistheorie von Badiou nochmals genauer anzuschauen, um am Beispiel des Phänomens künstlerischer Schaffenskrisen - wenn die Dinge stumm werden - zu argumentieren, dass Badiou in seiner Theorie einen entscheidenden Schritt auslässt.

Schreibe ich den Text oder schreibt der Text mich? In dieser Folge kombiniere ich meine Lesart des Eupalinos als kollektives Phantasma mit Roland Barthes' Phantasma, einen Roman zu schreiben. Eignen sich das Phantasma und der Ereignisbegriff von Gilles Deleuze dazu, Schaffensprozesse zu beschreiben? Es geht um paradoxe Dinge, zweiseitigen Diebstahl, unterstelltes Wissen, Zufallsbegegnungen, Wahrheitsaffekte und die Ethik der Produktion.

Mit dem Lacan-Experten Rolf Nemitz spreche ich über die Wiederholung. Wir beginnen klassisch mit Freuds Entdeckung des Wiederholungszwangs als Lust jenseits des Lustprinzips und arbeiten uns vor zur Jacques Lacans Wiederaufnahme und Umarbeitung des Begriffs. Bis die Stimme versagt, sprechen wir über Schicksalszwänge, das Drängen von Signifikanten, verlorene Objekte, intergenerationale Traumata und unbewusste Fehlleistungen. Denn das Unbewusste, so schließen wir mit Juan-David Nasio, das ist die Wiederholung!

In dieser Folge spreche ich — diesmal ohne Gast— über die Begehrensdynamik künstlerischer Produktion. Als Dreh-und Angelpunkt dient der Fund zweier auf den ersten Blick widersprüchlicher Aussagen im Werk von Jacques Lacan und Roland Barthes. Das künstlerische Schaffen, so meine These, wird bewegt von einem Künstler*innen-Begehren, das sich am Kunstwerk als produktiv erweist. Anschließend bespreche ich die Arbeit 'A Voyage of Growth and Discovery' (2010) von Mike Kelley und Michael Smith, um das Begehrensgeschehen auch auf der Darstellungsebene zu reflektieren.

Mit Moritz Klenk, Professor für Kulturwissenschaften an der Hochschule Mannheim, spreche ich über das Gespräch als Erfahrung und Mittel der Erkenntnis. Anhand seines Projekts eines öffentlichen gesprochenen Denktagebuchs diskutieren wir das Verhältnis von "schmutziger"und "gereinigter" Sprache und den Überschuss des Körperlichen in der Sinnproduktion. Dabei geht es um den Leib/Körper in Phänomenologie vs. Psychoanalyse, die Sinnlichkeit des Sinns, unvollständige Sätze und um das Stammeln, Stottern und Verklingen der Stimme.

Mit der Psychoanalytikerin, Autorin und Ex-Universitätsdozentin Edith Seifert spreche ich über die weibliche Lustposition in der Psychoanalyse. Es geht um das Verhältnis von Jouissance, Sprache und Körper, um Lustschmerz und Hingabe der Mystikerinnen, und um soziale Skripte und persönliche Drehbücher der Lust. Wir fragen, ob angesichts zeitgenössischer Entgrentzungsangebote wie BDSM Praktiken von einer Mystik des Alltags gesprochen werden kann, und ob innerhalb dieses kulturellen Rahmens das sexuelle Genießen eher als Refugium oder als Zwang empfunden wird.

Mit dem Lacan-Experten Rolf Nemitz spreche ich über die Praxis des Übersetzens. Wir versuchen, der Lust an dieser “selbstlosen" Kunst nachzuspüren und vergleichen Metaphern, die für den Übersetzungsvorgang bemüht werden. Wir sprechen über die Schwierigkeit Lacan zu übersetzen, fragen mit Walter Benjamin nach dem Ungesagten im Text und mit Frank Zappa ob ein Text über ein Kunstwerk nicht immer schon eine Übersetzung ist.

In this lecture, which is based on his 2017 German Law Journal article, Matthew will argue for a reading of the work of Martti Koskenniemi—arguably the most significant international legal thinker of the post-Cold War era—as an exercise in (Lacanian) psychoanalysis. Excavating the links between Koskenniemi and French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan, and analyzing the origins of those links in Koskenniemi’s debt to the Harvard branch of the American Critical Legal Studies (‘CLS’) movement, Matthew will argue that over almost thirty years Koskenniemi has employed psychoanalytic techniques to rebuild the self-confidence of international law(yers). The success of this confidence-building project explains the acclaim Koskenniemi’s work enjoys. As international law’s psychoanalyst he has defined the identity of the international lawyer and mapped the structure of international legal argument, stabilizing international law’s present reality by synchronizing it with narratives of its past. Any attempt to destabilize that reality or depart from present structures into an alternative future must start from an analysis of Koskenniemi’s methods and it is in this sense, and not out of a more pure interest in Koskenniemi’s work, that Matthew seeks to deconstruct Koskenniemi’s oeuvre. This lecture seeks to situate Koskenniemi’s method, reveal his choices and explore their limits in an effort to develop (tentative) proposals for a “new” international law(yer) and an international legal future outside the structure that Koskenniemi has mapped so effectively and affectively. Dr Matthew Nicholson joined Durham Law School as Lecturer in International Law in September 2016. Before joining Durham he worked at the University of Southampton as Lecturer in Public International Law (2012-2016), having completed his PhD at UCL in 2013. Matthew's work has been published in specialist and generalist law journals with international reach. His 2015 article 'The Political Unconscious of the English Foreign Act of State and Non-Justiciability Doctrine(s)' won the International and Comparative Law Quarterly's 'Young Scholar Prize'. He has also published in Law and Literature, Law and Critique, and the Northern Ireland Legal Quarterly. His research and teaching interests cover all aspects of international law, with particular interests in international legal theory, international environmental law and policy (climate change in particular), and the relationship between national and international law.
