Audio - Stepparents, Pat Yourself on the back.  You are doing a great job.  Continue to be self-aware about your weaknesses and flaws.  Learn to let go of your expectations regarding your biological parent and your stepchildren.  Listen at my practical experiences, learn from my mistakes, and be a better stepparent.

Stepparents are important to God.  Your journey as stepparent will be filled with rejection and some hurt.  The more that you are self-aware about your short comings, the better able to deal with your family.  Your healing is necessary as a parent.  You must be healed inorder for your family to walk in healing.  You must see that you have an important role to play.

If you are a parent, you know there are no guarantees in raising kids. You can read all the books you can get your hands on, do all the right things, and still your kids end up making their own way. Their choices may not be optimal and opposite of what you’d do. But you do have some years to influence them. Greg and I feel fortunate our kids are now self-sustaining adults. But in our roller-coaster journey of raising kids, we still wondered what the endgame would hold.

We give five things we did right in raising kids, but readily realize there were plenty of things we did wrong. There is no single path for any child and most will agree no one is completely prepared for the responsibilities that come with parenthood. Those little bundles of joy turn into toothless balls of energy, to become defiant teens and finally, blossom to what we hope to be functioning adults!

Pt 3 of 3, Christopher hosts Richard Capriola, author of “The Addicted Child’s” A Parent’s Guide to Adolescent Substance Abuse”.   In this segment we start the conversation about success.  He believes that treatment does work.  Treatment needs to sought out and applied.  The success is found by finding what is best for the child.  It’s very important that the parent gets a complete picture of what is going on with their child through the use of assessments.  The assessments help diagnose the condition.  Dr. Capriola is working to get this book into everyone who has a child to have this information at their finger tips to feel better prepared to deal with this issue if it presents itself in their lives.  He also has a parent workbook to help them work through their needs. Pt 2 of 3, Christopher hosts Richard Capriola, author of “The Addicted Child’s” A Parent’s Guide to Adolescent Substance Abuse”.  Mr. Capriola worked with parents who have dealt with substance abuse issues.  Mr. Capriola notes an alarming revelation that the number of opiod overdoses and deaths has increased during the pandemic.  He believes that we are beginning to see the effect of the pandemic not only on adolescents but on adults as well.   CDC has noted that there have been an increase in emergency room visits by grade school children as well as an increase of teen agers who are in need of some type of mental health care.   We discuss what’s in the Parents guide.  He talks about some of the newest drugs but alcohol and marijuana remain the principle uses.  He discusses vaping and the use of substances in vaping.  He discusses some assessments that you as a parent may need to get for your child in his book.  We close this segment with discussions of types of treatment. They are 5. Getting involved in arguments between your stepchild and your spouse.  6. Ignoring or countering the wishes of the ex.  7. Bad-mouthing the ex.  8. Pressuring your new partner to always put you first or seeing your stepchild's need for one-on-one time with his parent as a threat to your marriage.

Stepparents important for you to recognize the strengths of your Stepchildren and one of those strengths is that they are trying.  Sometimes we want instantaneous results and you are not going to get them with your Stepchildren.  Nurturing/Loving is a slow process that requires time.  I am starting to see changes in our relationship but I had to change first.
