451: Jason Silva | Origins of a Performance Philosopher

451: Jason Silva | Origins of a Performance Philosopher

Jason Silva (@JasonSilva) would have been called a “performance philosopher” by counterculture icon Timothy Leary. Among many things, he’s a futurist, filmmaker, creator of short video series Shots of Awe, and host of the National Geographic Channel’s Brain Games and Origins: The Journey of Humankind.

What We Discuss with Jason Silva:

    • How our concepts of self are formed — often through the eyes of others — and how they affect our behavior.
    • How top performers excel by shutting down the editorial parts of the human brain coined by Buddhists as the monkey mind.
    • Why “unscripted” isn’t the same as “unprepared,” and how videos can be edited to elicit altered states of consciousness.
    • How good directors help performers get out of their heads — while bad directors do just the opposite.
    • How is day-to-day reality edited by context, similar to the Kuleshov effect demonstrated by Alfred Hitchcock?
    • And much more!

Jason Silva (Part 2) - Time, Truth, and Surviving the Planet's Panic Attack

Jason Silva (Part 2) - Time, Truth, and Surviving the Planet's Panic Attack

This is Part 2 of my interview with Jason Silva. Listen to Part 1 here. Be warned: after this one, you're likely going to end up a Jason Silva junkie like I did. And be warned again: this episode covers an absurd amount of topics in 30 minutes and may blow your mind.

Jason Silva is an Emmy-nominated and world renowned TV personality, storyteller, filmmaker, and sought-after keynote speaker and futurist. He is best known for hosting 5 seasons of the Emmy-nominated, global hit TV series Brain Games, on the National Geographic Channel, broadcasted in over 171 countries. His inspirational videos, Shots of Awe, have received over 100 million views across social platforms. Most recently he hosted the global miniseries Origins: The Journey Of Humankind on the National Geographic Channel.

In Part 2, we go in-depth on:

    • The nature of reality, of course
    • And the nature of time, of course
    • And objectivity vs. subjectivity, brilliantly framed by Jason as Church vs. State
    • An Alain de Botton quote (listen to my epic two-part talk with him here)
    • Where science and poetry converge and diverge
    • The Great Gatsby and even more F. Scott Fitzgerald
    • The nagging feeling that your life is a film complete with setting, plots, and characters
    • The awe felt in discovering a new world, and literally, the discovery of The New World
    • How our world is currently in a panic attack due to pandemic
    • Negotiating with your amygdala to find peace in the "deep now"
    • Jason's privileged yet dangerous childhood in Venezuela
    • Jason's views on romantic love and his belief that the honeymoon can last forever

Jason Silva (Part 1) - Experiencing the Full Intensity of the Lived Experience

Jason Silva (Part 1) - Experiencing the Full Intensity of the Lived Experience

Today’s guest is essentially a professional mind-blower, and man is he good at what he does. This is Part 1 of 2.

I’m a big fan of Jason’s ever since my dear son Ali recommended his show. Call me corny, but I’m in awe of how this guy thinks and communicates.

I had no idea what to speak to him about because his scope of interest is massive: futurism, technology, creativity, the science of awe, disruptive innovation, relationships and mental health. Where we ended up has made for one of the most fascinating episodes yet. Even though we didn’t always agree, he opened my mind to a new paradigm for understanding perception itself. Don’t miss this.

    In Part 1, we discuss:

    • Our shared love and admiration for the Netherlands
    • Why Jason sees himself as an artist more than anything else
    • The importance of awe for engaging the world meaningfully
    • Flow cycles, and why Jason has been called a “cognitive ecstasy addict”
    • Why children are always nomads in a sense, and how that avoids jadedness
    • How adults create maps of the world to save energy, but lose the intensity of the lived experience
    • The health benefits of awe and Jason’s awe triggers: new experiences and cannabis
    • How cannabis puts you in the present moment to experience, as Michael Pollan said, “a sense of first sight unencumbered by knowingness”
    • Escapism vs Intensification: a debate on the utility of weed
    • Shaking up stuck patterns through psychedelics
